PD: I don't have had a child but looking at my parents in this last 5 years taking care of 2 girls and now a boy who has been born just a month ago I've got a lot of insight into what is parenting and their hardships (and joys)

Short version for now: Don't force something on your kid because you want it to become someone that YOU wish for.

Give it the means to deal with what the world will throw at it. Give it love, guidance, patience and help your kid to become confident and caring. And have faith in your kid (and let it feel that you have faith in it), in a sense that you realise and accept that it has its own life, its own hopes and wishes and it has the abilities to deal with anything that life throws at it. And allthough it has its own life, you are here for your kid whenever it needs you.

The amount of people who think Apple is okay makes me sad.

Kids will be interested in what they want to be interested in. Giving them a catalogue of games to somehow make them "better" is weird, controlling and pretentious.

It's fine. It's the internet after all. The reason we bought an iPad, is because one girl is right-handed, and the other is a lefty. The touch controls gives them equal freedom of learning how to use graphical interfaces, it's awkward seeing her with a mouse or arcade sticks, (I built her a lefty stick), but with the iPad, she's got a very natural flow that's very impressive to me.

First post updated with firsthand account trying a similar experiment via exposing kid to games in a chronological order.
The experiment was considered a success by age 8 with the kid being able to clear Spelunky on the hardest setting.

I'd like to revisit adding more games to the master list.

My plan when hes 5, Get him a musical instrument instead of video games. I'll reward him with video games though lol. Planning a childs early life to teen hood with all video games is kinda reaching & unhealthy imo. You don't want to mold him/her into a hermit or a shut in.

Guilty; I have 4 of said bipeds myself.

My house is very gaming friendly, pretty much all key games from all eras of gaming represented, everything hooked up to different TV sets. A "best of" setup, a modern gaming setup, and a Sega-dedicated one downstairs.

My kids play the odd Super Smash Bros game once in a while, but that's pretty much it. Objectively, they're very bad at it. I don't want to sound mean or anything, but that's pretty true. Even my 7 year old (eldest kid I have) spams the same button and barely moves the character. I give him no chance to show him the error of his ways. I go next to him, block his "smash" and then grab him, but he does kill the CPU opponents quite often. Daddy always wins though.

I think the kids are interested in gaming in general, and they see me play "old games" from time to time. I do mostly play when they're asleep, though. When they do see me play play, they realize the games are hard. I'm toying with Hagane these days and my son thinks the game is impossible, and "too hard". Perseverance is not really his thing.

Ultimately, I think it would suck if my kids end up being bad at games, or if they don't care about them, because I do care quite a bit. I'm not pushing anything on my end, if they're interested they can play whatever they want. On the other end, I think we should let them be. Some are probably not made for this!

Don't worry if the kids suck at games, they're still young. We all sucked back then. I'm sure if you watched yourself play as a kid you'd be facepalming a lot.

If they stay interested in the hobby they'll progressively get better. Just be there to coach them.
