Punch Drunk Love - a movie about me.

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters - INTO IT.

Up on Poppy Hill - I wish they went more into the incest subplot. The insides of the latin quarter was the most interesting part of the movie.

The Quiet Earth - Into it.

Mishima is brilliant and I intend to rewatch it soon

I'm (obviously re) watching Naked Gun atm, still love it

'How 'bout dinner? I know this little out of the way place that serves great Viking food.'

actually in watching this now, although Nielsen was obviously a legend, George Kennedy really is great too.

exactly what I thought, it was a good action film, but definitely not a very 2000AD film.

This is 40

Watched it w/ the woman. As I approach that age, a lot of it hit home. Nothing stellar, but definitely an enjoyable watch.

Mama

A well made traditional horror film.
Nice people struggling against an undeserved Problem (and maturing in the process), sinister little girls, creepy (albeit cheapened by CGI) special effects, a plot that makes almost too much sense, no significant instances of humour or parody (except maybe the fact that bad people generally die quickly while the good guys survive multiple encounters with the Problem).
Silly horror tropes are generally averted; for example there are no lighting-challenged houses (except the sparingly used abandoned cottage in the woods, which is excused because it doesn't have electricity), even nighttime scenes are curiously well lit.

Predators. Didn't have any greater expectations and found it entertaining. Having watched AvsP, your expectations should be on the safe side.
Surprisingly natural (for this day and age) the hallmarks of Holywood cinema came up. Half-naked man against backdrop of flames? Check. Just as manly villain getting broken like a piñata? He just happened to play on the wrong team (and look the type). It was no Showdown in Little Tokyo, but almost there.

From Beyond - ***

Brilliantly disgusting horror film, these days what they did with latex and fake slime would all be CGI. Sad times.

^Oh hell yes. I feel like rewatching it now. If you've not seen Re-Animator, watch that too - it's from the same director and shares some key actors, the same irreverent black humour and those ghastly practical special effects.

That bondage-obsessed scientist chick is what made From Beyond for me.

That and that final form of that evil scientist. The way his head wags back and forth had me in stitches.

Sounds like I'm watching From Beyond tonight...

Watched Ted last night. Went in to it with an open mind, but despite a few laughs it came across as a pretty generic comedy. I suppose I was hoping for more transgressive Family Guy style humour, but the jokes were pretty middle of the road.

This is a bit of a weird request, but you guys are pretty weird. After playing so many first person dungeon crawlers, I've got a real fetish for any media, particularly films that are set predominantly underground. Doesn't even matter if they're good. Even though it sucked, I thought Creep was awesome because most of it was set (and filmed) in Charring Cross underground (and because it had Franka Potente in it, but never mind). Similar story with The Descent. I seem to remember Beastmaster had some good tunnel action, and Labyrinth is essentially the closest a film has come to a dungeon crawler. So... recommend me stuff like that. Bonus points if it was made in the 80's and has an awesome synth filled soundtrack :D

It goes without saying that you've seen Day of the Dead, right? It just ticks every single one of those boxes. Actually, so what if you've seen it -- watch it again! :D

Of course :D though now you mention it, I don't think I've seen it for a few years... Definitely time to re-watch it!

Lovecraft inspired pure insanity, it's like a spin off of Re-Animator with matching cast and director. Highly amusing for all the right reasons, totally insane and filled with ridiculous monstrosities and alarming and completely out of place sexual fetishism. Watched it about 6 months ago and loved every minute of its straight to VHS wonder. Enjoy.

In the US. I'm not even sure Re-Animator got a theatrical release in the uk, a whole ton for stuff in the 80's went straight to rental for us.

Die Hard 2: Die Harder

Verdict: Really bad. Worse than I remembered in the theaters. Bad guys were pretty flat. The action was poorly directed. Intensity just not there.

Worth seeing if only to be exposed to the "Most Sequelish Sequel Ever" winner. Elsewhere, such quintessence perhaps is only achieved in universal constants, such as pi, e, G, and Dennis Quaid.

The villains, while vicious, were also fairly generic compared to the comics.

Still, better than that Stallone piece of shit if I remember right
Well, considering that the old Judge Dredd with actor Stallone hails from the mid-1990s, it shows it's age indeed.

Wow, you're right. £19k across 35 screens.

Honestly, it was a very different era for movies. Anything with relatively low budgets struggled to get proper theatrical releases, hence we pretty much knew the VHS rental store for horror movies, horror movies and more horror movies (it was like a horror movie repository.) It's sort of heart-warming to find out films like From Beyond even made it to 35 screens though, I had no idea.

Watched From Beyond and thought it was great. I love the tone of the film. These days you pretty much have to make a horror film deadly serious, completely silly (Scary Movie) or meta as fuck (Cabin In The Woods). Nice to see something like From Beyond, which is mainly straight, but with some nice silly touches too. Having Peter from Dawn of the Dead running around in a tiny pair of red pants for an entire scene had the whole room in stitches. The sexual deviance subplot just came across as fun and campy too. And the gore effects were, of course awesome. With this and Hellraiser, there seemd to be a bit of a fetish for, uh, fetishism in horror cinema at this point. Was there some moral panic about bondage porn at the time?

Stuart Gordon made a third (vaguely) Lovecraftian horror called Castle Freak, which is the best name for a horror film I've ever heard. This one definitely did go straight to video, but apparently it's coming out on Blu-Ray in the UK very soon (if anyone gives a shit about Blu-Rays for some reason  )

It's a shame DH2 is so flat, especially since Renny Harlin proved he can make a competent action flick later on. Some of the ideas aren't bad, but the execution and some of the actors are dreadful.

Way cool titles though, like the way it slams on. And what a subheader: Die Harder. All about the 80's mang.

I think what killed it the most for me is the lack of buildup. In the original, trouble found McClane. In DH2, he was looking for it, and found it. Luggage thieves with guns in a restricted area of an airport? Even pre 9/11 they'd have shut the fucker down and diverted all aircraft.

I think I've gotten more enjoyment making _____ 2: __ Harder jokes than actually watching the movie.

Besides what's already been pointed out, it bothers the hell out of me that they bothered naming the location as Dulles Airport, but the filming location doesn't even come close to resembling Dulles in form or function. Half the plot points of the movie are physically impossible if it were actually happening at Dulles!

Night Of The Living Dead: Resurrection - *

Normally I wouldn't go into detailed information as to avoid spoilers. In this case I will make an exception, as it's one of the worst films I've seen for a long time, and not in any enjoyable way. It starts badly, some youths harass a man outside a shop, bullying him into buying some strong lager. Obviously there are some zombie complications, but this scene contains a line about the situation being just like World At War (or something like that). The youths, specifically hoodies, are portrayed as people of the very worst denominator to the point of being pantomime villains making videos of punching eachother on their phones. Anyway, the man returns from the shop a zombie, and proceeds to bite one of them a few times. At this point a black guy turns up in a car, and tells them they should keep away from their friend before driving off. Another is bitten and they scatter.

Our focus now follows the black guy, Ben. He's driving across country since the main roads are closed (because they didn't have the budget for them not to be, but that's ok). He calls a girl called Barbara (a blonde picture is shown on his phone) to let her know he's on his way - at this point I had a slight amount of hope left for the film, because the scenes with Ben were good, his character was being established, and this film was supposed to be a re-imagining of the original NOTLD film. Ben eventually runs out of petrol and makes his way to a farmhouse, while trying to see if anyone is home they shoot him in the face through the letterbox, and Ben is dead.

Ben, who by that time I had accepted as the likeable survivor of the film is replaced and the whole film turns face and becomes a drama about the family living inside. It's critical that characters are likeable before you put them in peril or zombie films don't especially work. The house contains the father, who shot ben in the face and is shown to be generally useless. The grandfather who mumbles and occasionally talks about god, but is clearly old and dying. The son who has already been bitten. The daughter who is pregnant and tiresome, the sister who swings from shocked to neurotic to slutty in the space of half an hour. The son in law who is sleeping with both of the sisters. Finally the mother who knows the son is cheating on her daughter with her other daughter and has done nothing about it (tries to later). They're not a likeable bunch, I didn't give a damn about them.

Mostly they just end up getting killed by eachother, but not before the father tries to go and get help, and despite being IN A CAR and having shot an innocent man in the face, is unable to pass a group of youths/hoodies wielding trowels and baseball bats. They drag him from his car and drive over his legs a few times. One of them is prominently shown to be recording it on their phone. Next they go to the farm house, the woman points a shotgun at them and this is apparently "just like C.O.D!". I should note that Ben had been driving for what was portrayed to be several hours, since it's dark when he arrives and light when he left. However, at least one of the hoodies is from the first scene - perhaps they used teleportation to move that far so quickly.

Then to cut a long story short everyone dies except the mother and slut sister, who hide in a shed. In the morning while the zombies are shown to be wandering in their peaceful utopia almost with happy faces, some wannabe army guys turn up - they drag the women out by their hair and shoot the mother since she's been bitten. It fades to black just after the leader says the sister should be thrown in the "rape van". It may have been "rape bus", I forget.

In summary this film was a pile of shit with a horrible script, horrible characters and is a horrible insult to the original film.
