HowTo: Region mod of Toaplan games

Post by THE »

Here comes some Toaplan love:

to change the region of most (if not all?) Toaplan games you just need to modify the following jumpers:

JP1,JP2,JP3,JP4

All jumpers connected is for Japanese region.

Here is a picture of my dirty and badly soldered Out-Zone PCB:

E.g. Switching Out-Zone to JPN region gives you a small albeit nice intro and extro!

Thanks, I just took a look at my OutZone board this morning and figured that was what I needed to do. I'll give it a try when I get home tonight.

It looks like you had to jumper J1, J3, and J4? I think on mine, I already have those diode-like thingies on J1-3, and I'll only need to connect J4 (looks like there was something there before that got clipped off). What kind of component is that anyway?

I think that's a ROM revision thing (for OutZone).

EU is AFAIK only JP2 connected, the other three disconnected.

Here's a couple more Toaplan games:
Truxton/Tatsujin - jumper setting
Truxton II/Tatsujin Oh - jumper setting
Batsugun - jumper setting
Fire Shark/Same!Same!Same! - eprom swap (4 roms)
Fixeight - Region is set by eeprom data, not straightforward to change if possible at all

Anyone know if it's possible to change the region in Twin Cobra to Kyukyoku Tiger or Sky Shark to Hishouzame?

You need to change the ROMs for Flying Shark.

It looks like Twin Cobra/kyukyoku tiger is a rom swap too. Unfortunately two of the Kyukyoku tiger roms are listed as bad dumps. Anyone have a good rom dump?

Those are the protection "ROMs" it does not prevent a region change.

Sometimes you need to change the CO1/CO2 chip too, or you'll get 'HW ERROR' on boot.

I get the 'HW error' when I try to run the Kyukyoku Tiger roms on my Twin Cobra board. I changed Roms 2, 4, and 5. Is T.TC-4 a chip that needs to be changed?

Possibly - I've never had any of those that worked to try with.

Is it possible to put Flying Shark roms on the Twin Cobra PCB? I remember reading somewhere that the hardware is compatible.

Do you recall which roms would need to be changed for Flying Shark to Same! Same! Same! ?
