Edit out 90% of your life
Moving to a studio to save mad loot on rent with the plan of buying a condo in a year (or something...) Presents the obvious dilemma since most media can't fit in the studio.
I'm sure we had a 'top ten everything' thread, but now you must think harder. You actually don't have room for your ten favorite books of fiction, favorite dvds/blu rays, etc., but you know you will take them anyway. This isn't fucking game, I'm boxing up this shit right now. Whatever your favorite thing is...imagine it going in the box to go sit in a storage room for a year (assuming no one steals it.) Say goodbye to all your favorite EVERYTHING (unless it is a digital copy)--what MUST you save from the box or risk not being worth the sad sack of flash you look at in the mirror every morning?
And no, 'Kill Yourself' isn't an acceptable answer.

Welcome to living in Japan. I've actually got a decent sized place for one person, but I assume it's not *THAT* much bigger than your studio. Definitely don't have space for everything I want. A lot of it goes in the closet awaiting to be sold.

Gahh I'm in no position to even approach this kind of question right now. Of course there's always emulation. I'm sure I could whittle down my collection to a handful of games per system, and one current PC monitor, one classic style TV, and a VGA monitor, and do without a few systems entirely (I actually have mostly fighters for the Neo Geo, d'oh), but then you've got books to deal with...I would keep a few compilation / anthology type things, just because they're flexible and especially if they're useful. Movies...well, it'd have to be a special one for me to keep it; if I had time I would rip a bunch of stuff before packing it off. Keeping a ton of video material around seems kind of useless to me what with the constant format changes.

Re: Edit out 90% of your life
My girlfriend and I live in a fairly small studio with loft, but we have sort of made a game of it. We have some really bizarre/interesting pieces of furniture and pretty much everything we get for our place is with space saving in mind. So far, I haven't really had to downsize on any of my collections/hobbies due to our small living quarters, but I owe a lot of that to the fact that she likes almost everything that I like, and has an incredible tolerance for all of my bullshit (candy cab, old broadcast monitors, eroguro paintings, etc). We are saving to buy a house a few years from now, but honestly I have a strange attachment to this little apartment.

Laptop, Saturn pad, woman (or man, your call).
We'll assume that there are liquor stores and sex shops nearby so those two sets of items are available at will.
Come to think of it, ditch the lady for a Fleshlight and you'll save a ton of space.

Re: Edit out 90% of your life
I could probably get rid of just about everything in my living room (including the furniture and the TV/game consoles) and be fine. These days I do most of my gaming on my desktop PC anyway, and I have the ability to use it as my TV too. On the other hand, I would not want to live anywhere without keeping a good core set of kitchenware (good pots and pans, utensils, etc) because trying to cook without the proper tools is just a pain, period.
Then again, I'm already in a 1-bedroom apartment, so downsizing to a studio probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

Re: Edit out 90% of your life
I had to take a similar decision about a month ago. I only took what I could carry with me: clothes, documents and similar personal stuff, my PC (with an LCD monitor and rather heavy wood speakers, no case), my TE SFIV fightstick, cellphone, camera, a Katsuya Terada portfolio, Fables Covers by James Jean, Capcom Design Works: early days, a small Felicia gashapon based on Pocket Fighter, a Comix Zone Genesis cart, a Fatal Fury Special Neo Geo cart, a Dragon Blaze poster and some stuff I use for drawing.
Everything else (manga/comics, artbooks, records, books, movie DVDs, etc.) was left at my former home, and is probably all sold by now.

Surprised by the lack of handheld gaming devices in the above plans. I'd make sure my GBA SP, charger, carts, stereo jack adapter and earphones come with me.
As well as the digital camera and portable music player. Those three portable gizmos.

I know exactly how you feel, I only have space for 7 cabs and 3 pinballs in my arcade and need to squeeze another of each in, such a pain!!

The Kindle is definitely making the book thing more doable. Honestly I don't know if I could have done this ten years ago, I mean...
TV and movies...on the computer
Music...on the computer
Video game...through the computer screen
Still having to make some hard choices though.

Re: Edit out 90% of your life
Is a studio something else where you guys are? Like is it a tiny one room bachelor apartment? To me a studio is a big open space, generally with high ceilings.
My place would be called a studio, and it's like 800-900sq. ft with 12 foot ceilings, all one big space. Not what I would consider small or limited on space. It may be smaller square foot wise compared to a 3 bedroom house, but the plus is the open concept, so big things like cabs don't seem that big. In a house broken into smaller rooms, cabs dominate the room.
If I had to slim down all I would need is my laptop and audio interface, reference monitors, a midi controller, a DMG and a bong.
Sad thing is, at this point, I think I could get rid of all my cabs and games and not even really miss them. I rarely even play anymore.
Would create a shit ton of empty space in my place though. Hell just taking out the versus we could have a dance floor.
Not that I will get rid of them anytime soon.

Re: Edit out 90% of your life
It's not really sad. When I got hard into arcade stuff, I really wasn't doing anything else. At that point I had stopped making music for several years, so I just put all my time into playing games. Since I got back into making music, more and more over time, I find when I have spare time I would rather use that time to create something(music) than consume(play games). I get far more fulfillment out of finishing a track I am proud of, than beating any score.moh wrote:Sad thing is, at this point, I think I could get rid of all my cabs and games and not even really miss them. Priorities change. It's not a bad thing. 2 or 3 years ago, I would come home from work and spend a few hours a night playing whatever Cave game I happened to be working on, and I would do that everyday.
Like I said, at this point I have no intentions of getting rid of anything, except maybe the crazy taxi cab. I am still interested in the hobby, just not as actively. I still like games, they just aren't the focus right now. Who knows, I could catch the bug again and be right back into it hard again.
Seriously though, when was the last time you saw me post outside of off topic or shmupmeets?

Re: Edit out 90% of your life
I did this about 7 years ago, and I actually kinda miss the simplicity (I've since gone on to buy a house and fill it with a bunch of junk). Anyway, my secret to success was a modded xbox with XBMC and a laptop. Both held loads of digital music, films and games in a very small footprint. Down sampled digital content and emulation aren't ideal, but they're invaluable when space is your scarcest asset.

You are being forced to spend the next 10 years of your life in a basement. After those 10 years, you will receive $10 mil. Your basement comes fully furnished with a good bed, sink, a toilet, a shower and a trash chute. You are also being given a bonus 30 points to spend on items/amenities that you can take with you to your basement. BONUS BONUS: If you half your $10 mil payout to $5 mil, you will receive 35 points to spend. If you reduce your payout to zero, you receive 40 points.
