Going by MAME...

The original Japanese version sends you back to a checkpoint when you die. It has a playing field wider than the screen and horizontal scrolling as you move left and right. And it has 2 player alternating.

The US/Europe version respawns you instantly when you die. It has a narrower playing field with no horizontal wobble. And it has 2 player simultaneous.

Complicating things, there's a second Japanese version that uses the same mechanics as the US/Europe version.

The Japanese version without the 2 player co-op is also slightly more difficult

You can also have the alternate set of EPROMs in order to change between versions. I got the US version in the local market, having only played the Mega Drive/Genesis version. I missed the plane crashing slowly, allowing you to fire form - which only happens in the original Japanese release, so I burned the alternate set and have enjoyed it kicking my ass since then.

The JP 1-player version also has faster bullets, but you also have increased firepower! (you can fire more on-screen shots than Fire Shark).
