Sony PVM-20L5: How do you adjust Screen Size?

Post by c0dehunter »

Is there anyway to change the Vertical or Horizontal size of the screen? It has 16:9 and Underscan buttons, but I have not been able to manually change the size.

When I play games on MAME and other emulators, the bottom portion of screen (SCORES, LIVEs, etc.) is cut-off and I want to be able to adjust the screen to see this information. I have tried other resolutions, but it remains the same.

Is there a software solution out there like PowerStrip, or RivaTuner that would do the job?

The game is question (among many others) is IREM's "In the Hunt", an excellent horizontal shooter.

Thanks.

When I had a PVM (it was a 25inch version) I found a way to do this, but it involved taking the casing off.

If you take the case off, go to the front of the monitor so your facing the screen again. Rotate the monitor so that the right hand side is now facing you. You should see a PCB (if same design as my one). If you look very carefully at the PCB there are holes. If you look inside those holes there are flat headed turn screws. Each hole is marked by letters like HS or VS (horizontal slide, vertical slide) or something similar. By turning the screw, you can adjust the screen to the sizes you want.

I was warned by Sony that high powered electricity flows through, so use something plastic.

I've just looked at pics of your monitor and it looks very similar to my one, so maybe its the same deal.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Try holding down the MENU and DEGAUSS buttons at the same time. This should access the service menu. From there you can change H and V size and position. Press MENU and DEGAUSS again to exit the service menu.

I have an 20L2 and it requires a 480i image to show the menus, they don't work in 240p.

Unfortunately MENU and DEGAUSS trick does not work. I have had opened my PVM-2030 (now sold) in the same manner, but these are much newer CRTs and I wish there is another method to adjust H and V position/size.

In that case a service manual would sort you out.

Try opening the menu and press DEGAUSS and ENTER at the same time.

Thank you so much, it did the trick!
One question, is changing the screen size/geometry universal? I mean I have different games consoles (PS1 and SATURN), as well as a PC (for emulation purposes) via a separate RGB expansion add-on card. Would any change in size/geometry affect all of these devices?

What I am trying to say is this:
when I play my PS1 and SATURN games, they are centered and there is no need to adjust the size/geomtry. However, when I play emulation (again via a separatly inserted RGB add-on card), most of the time some information is cut-off.

Thanks.

Yeah it's universal.

Unfortunately one setting will not be ideal for all sources, as the amount of underscan will differ between them. Try and find a happy medium. Alternatively you could note the ideal settings for each source, and then go in and change the values each time you swap between them.

It's for this reason that I'm after a BVM, it has presets :)
