Real quick PSP question: do I need to worry about this?
Real quick PSP question: do I need to worry about this?
So I'm traveling all day tomorrow, and believe it or not, I've never upgraded my PSP to custom firmware, and never pirated crap, et cetera. I'm still running DevHook. That's right...I'm ancient, and *very* computer-stupid. I actually have an "A" PSP, running 1.50 FW, if I recall correctly.
So, I've got games that I haven't played yet since DevHook doesn't go up as far as I need it to. I'd like to start playing my copy of Darius Burst, Gunhound EX, and Goku Makaimura Kai, so I figure it's time to finally just upgrade to the current firmware that Sony offers. I'm very afraid of bricking my system using CFW.
My question is: will getting Sony's latest FW update preclude me from ever getting CFW in the future? I'd like to keep my options open, even if I never end up using them. Optimally, I'd be able to find someone in my area to upgrade my PSP for me so that I don't brick the system myself...but for now I just want to be able to play the stuff I have without screwing myself in the future.
Can I do this without killing the chance for future installation of CFW?

Re: Real quick PSP question: do I need to worry about this?
I have a PSP-3000 and I wonder if I have to update the firmware myself in order to play all the PSP games I've been importing...
Can't I just leave it alone without ever updating and just play the games I buy?

Re: Real quick PSP question: do I need to worry about this?
You need to update, most games require a certain FW version.
And to the initial poster: you can upgrade to the official FW and still get a custom FW onto it later on. All PSPs with all FWs are upgradable (last I looked, somebody correct if I'm wrong).
On the other hand: why update to an official FW, just update to a fresh CFW version and enjoy all the new games along with all your ISOs (or whatever you load using DevHook).

Re: Real quick PSP question: do I need to worry about this?
Installing CFW on 6.60 (the latest official firmware) is VERY easy. You copy the application to your PSP's memory stick and run it. Yeah, really, that's it.
So just update your firmware without any worries. Then install CFW, it's totally worth it.
If you want less brick risk you don't even have to do a permanent CFW install, just launch a program that keeps CFW temporarily in memory until next time your PSP loses power..
Yeah there's a reason there's a lot of PSP piracy.

Re: Real quick PSP question: do I need to worry about this?
I don't know what the current FW level is, but I've got mine at 6.69 or something similar, which was the most up-to-date when I got it, and there's (l)cfw for it. If you're concerned, you can find sites that have all past and present official firmwares and pick one that's compatible with whatever you want to play. Darius Burst and Ultimate GnG (which I assume is what Goku Makaimura is) work fine; I don't know about Gunhound Ex, but given its quasi-unofficiality, I'd bet it's compatible with whatever. I've played lots of other games and they've all worked like a charm.
Definitely go with light custom firmware, though. You can disable it whenever, and reenable it just as easily by running the lcfw program direct on the unit. I can still shop on PSN even, without deactivating the lcfw.

So if I don't ever update out of the box, then I'm shit outta luck in trying to play games on the PSP

Re: Real quick PSP question: do I need to worry about this?
Follow-up: I've updated my system to Sony's highest current FW which apparently is 6.60, and I'm easily running all the UMD games I want to, so I'm happy.
Thanks for the advice, folks!

Newer games yes, but why wouldn't you upgrade? You could always downgrade again later if you wanted to revert to stock condition.xbl0x180 wrote:So if I don't ever update out of the box, then I'm shit outta luck in trying to play games on the PSP
I think that's true at least, might want to read up on it before upgrading if you're really concerned about it, but I don't see why you would be.
Re: Real quick PSP question: do I need to worry about this?
I've never done anything on-line with regards to games, so I don't even know how to update FW...
Re: Real quick PSP question: do I need to worry about this?
If a game requires a firmware update, it's on the UMD.

has all the info you need basically.
The basics are that CFW are now manually booted - meaning that for all extents and purposes your PSP will be running in Official Firmware Mode until you start the CFW from the games list. Then it will remain active until you power down the PSP. This means you can get to the store and not have the worry that Sony will hit you with a ban hammer.
The basic news is pretty much -every- model PSP is Custom Firmware friendly these days.

seems unlikely - we've not had a significant Official Firmware upgrade in a while - regardless the fact that PSP is still very much alive in Japan, i just can't see Sony going to the effort to upgrade the security measuers in place. They had one final stab at it around 5.50 OFW - and that was quickly hacked so i think the PSP is going to be left alone for the rest of time.will getting Sony's latest FW update preclude me from ever getting CFW in the future?

Stumpokapow:
Every version of every PSP can have custom firmware added to it in less than 10 minutes. What's more, custom firmware is now temporary--when your PSP boots up, it's in official firmware. Run an application, you're in custom firmware. Don't want custom firmware anymore? Reboot PSP. Want to delete it all together? Just delete the application. What's more, custom firmware has PSN access, so there's really no reason to worry about it.
Instructions:
1. Upgrade PSP to current firmware.
2. Download this: http://procfw.googlecode.com/files/660PRO-B10.fix1.rar
3. Hook PSP up to PC or Mac via USB so that you can access your memory stick.
4. Drag the PSP and seplugins to your PSP--merge the PSP folder.
5. Disconnect your PSP, return to menu. Go to games list, run "Pro Update". After a few seconds, custom firmware is installed. You may delete the Pro Update application once this is done.
6. Your PSP is still running official firmware and will every time you reboot. To launch custom firmware, run FastRecovery. This will take 5-10 seconds. Your PSP will now be in custom firmware.

I've got an official copy of Gunhound. Which official FW update does it require and what's the cfw equivalent?

I just upgraded to the current version of FW (6.60) and it's working on my PSP. Cool stuff, too!Skykid wrote:I've got an official copy of Gunhound. Which official FW update does it require and what's the cfw equivalent?

That, I wouldn't know, as I just got the 6.60 FW tonight, and haven't had time to mess with CFW tonight.Skykid wrote:6.6, cool.boagman wrote:I just upgraded to the current version of FW (6.60) and it's working on my PSP. Tomorrow's a long day of traveling to Tennessee! And I can now play any of my PSP games!
