OK...

I've been playing Shogun for a couple weeks now on an Android tablet.

My opinion:

This game rocks. It's obviously got some DDP influence in there, and the flexibility of weapon systems, overdrive and bullet canceling bring a hectic but fun element to gameplay. Mixing in some proximity scoring and grazing basically makes Shogun any game you want it to be.

Give it a shot...and like spadgy said, turn on the hitbox, deadzone and static weapon buttons for as close to a "cave-like" experience as you can imagine.

Great DDP style enemies and setting don't hurt either.

Also, if you're in the Saint Louis area, be sure to try and knock me out of 1st place in City Rankings.....the world \country \city ranking system is the shit too, BTW.

Go play!

Matskat - if you like this try Psyvariar 2 (or either the original Psyvariar or the jazzed up version Psyvariar Revision) if you haven't already.

Oh - and what's your high score? I hit 6th in the world for a full run with 107 million.

I played the shit out of Psyvariar 2 back in the old dreamcast days...I also have a soft spot for the Skikigami games....the risk\reward system of grazing bullets is awesome to me....I like the risky payoffs!

Now that I've figured out Shogun's scoring, I'm working on each stage individually.

My stage 1 high is 22M and my full run...ending at stage 3 boss is 45+M.

Can't get through it 100% since I figured out how to score...the game gets PISSED and starts throwing the sink at ya!

So I picked this game up while Mission 2 was free. To make a long story short, I've since had to switch devices and am now on a 3rd Gen iPad. After migrating, I've found Mission 2 is once again locked and I am unable to restore it. Some help?

Hmmm.. I'm unfamiliar with that issue...

I bougt Shogun the day it released on Android. It was like $4.

I was unaware that there was a locked out "demo" version. Do you pay for the additional levels? There are only 4....

Hmmm.. Someone help this man. :)

I emailed the developer because I was also unable to restore in-app purchases. Thu said it was a known problem that they hoped to fix with the update that came out this week. That update did not fix the problem, so I have emailed them again.

It's unfortunate to hear of these issues. I'm in no way affiliated w/ the devs - but I'm a big fan of what they've done w/ Shogun...Amazing work from a dev that specializes in AR camera phone games :)

Hope they make it right---need more players on the boards. My buddy and I are #1 and #2 respectively in City Rankings, #17 and #18 in Country Rankings....
(I fucking hope that there are indeed more than 18 players in the USA :)

I'm ranked 48th in the world....(probably only 50 players :/ )

Good shit :)

There's a few more than that at least! You can check out full Shogun leaderboardsover on the developer's website for the game.

So minor updates... Much better if they made Misson 5! Four levels is too little for a paid shmup)

The game's rank is so brutal (once you figure out scoring) that level 4 is beginning to seem VERY far away....

Glad it's working for you. Still no stage 2 for me though - it didn't restore because I technically didn't "purchase" it, but I downloaded the app at a time where it was being offered for free, so having access to it revoked is a bit annoying.

I'm don't feel the same about this shmup in particular. As it's rank increases at such a furious (and near exponential) rate, even within the first loop alone there's loads new to get out of it after you get your first 1-All. The way the game plays for me a few weeks after first getting it feels very different in terms of pace and patterns, even though I'm still playing within the same four levels (as now when I play I push rank so fast I put it way beyond my skill level by the final boss. I can't get to the second loop much anymore. I must admit, I am playing it less now).

The game has been updated to a paid app - $1.99 for the full game.

A side effect of this is that anyone who had the app before gets updated to the full game even if you were missing levels...

That's great, because somehow I lost all the levels I'd opened with payment!

Been playing this recently on an iPad Mini. Started off with the Lite version, managed 27.9 million on Mission 1 (#37 in the World, #5 in US, #1 for Van Nuys, although I wasn't actually in Van Nuys at the time...)

Bought the full version and cleared it the same day with 54 million for the full run (#82 in the World, back in Japan now, but for some reason it doesn't recognise Japan so I'm #10 in 'Unknown Country' and 'Unknown City').

I don't think I'll ever be entirely comfortable with touch-screen shmups and, while this isn't too bad, I'd still rather be playing with a proper controller. Certain sections are just irritating to try and move around the screen while not obscuring your view with your hand (even with increased dead zone setting). It's also somewhat unbalanced - in a typical bullet hell your reaction to a screen full of bullets should be 'Oh shit' but in this your reaction is more like 'Great! A chance to recharge my shields'.

It also makes some elementary errors - when the warning message comes up before the Mission 3 and 4 bosses, there are still enemies and bullets on the screen, so you might get hit by something that's been obscured by the warning message. There are some bullet patterns in Missions 3 and 4 that seem pretty undodgeable once the rank get high enough, but thanks to the graze-for-shields mechanic, the game is still very easy.

Still worth checking out I suppose, but nothing earth-shattering.

Up to #30 in the World, with a score of 95 million.

Hell Mode - which you gain access to by getting 50 million in the first loop - is a bit shambolic, really. The suicide bullets aren't particularly hard to see, but they don't quite stand out as much compared to the other bullets, so when the screen fills up it's tough to keep track of them. I think I made it to around the end of Mission 2 on the 2nd loop. There are still sections where it should be possible to fill up your shield gauge, so Hell Mode is probably do-able with practice. Not sure if it's worth the extra effort, though.
