I've always liked these games, but it was Raiden Fighters Jet in my college arcade that really did it.

Always been a fan, but never really started to delve deep into the genre until a chap of mine introduced me to DDP on Saturn :D

from there, it's been a constant descent into madness

Gradius III on SNES. When I figured out how to get SDL MAME to work, DoDonPachi got me hooked.

In 2004 I played Esprade on sven666's Neo Geo Candy cab. Since then I have acquired several PCBs in this particular game genre.. Unfortunately I suck at most of the games in my collection since I've been so busy collecting and no time to play. Well, now it's time to play! :)

Esprade is what hooked me too. I was looking for something different from Street Fighter II to play on my arcade cab since I was mostly playing 1P only. I ended up picking up an Esprade pcb after playing it a little in mame (I liked the graphics better than Dodonpachi).

I saw a Space Invaders machine in 1980 and it's been a thing with me ever since. I wanted an Atari 2600 because of it, so it lead to my love of consoles. There was a platform game lull for a bit in the NES days till Gradius and Lifeforce came out on it ...then later Blazing Lasers and Thunderforce came out in the 16bit era and really re-ignited my love of the genre and gave us a more specific word for it..Shooters! Till then we just called them arcade style games.

R-Type, Sidewinder and Xenon 2 on the Amiga were my first shmups.
I rediscovered the genre about four to five years ago when I was getting into retro gaming and immediatley fell in love with the raw ageless gameplay it offers.

Originally, Stargate in arcades, I played that a lot. But I found a renewed interest in the genre after Ikaruga came out on Dreamcast.

Back when I was a kid I used to play Galaxian and Exerion a lot in my Famicom, my first console. I also liked Aero Fighters 2 on the arcades, but it was way too hard for me and couldn't even get past the second stage.

I focused on arcade fighting games (on a casual level) and switched to JRPGs when I got my PSX. This continued when I got my first PC and played old stuff on emulators. I started to get bored of them around 2006-2007, and gradually went back to my arcade roots thanks to Kaillera, GGPO and MAME, that got me hardcore into fighting games. Then around 2010 a fighting game friend of mine recommended me some Cave games on MAME, and I started to become interested in playing the genre seriously. Gigawing was the first game I played with a 1CC mindset.

Shortly after I met Psikyo_Ball, who got me into Psikyo shooters, and I got addicted to the genre.

I used to play these type of games all the time as a kid on computers. Back then I referred to them simply as ''Space ship games''.

Years later, I came across a review of this game called Ikaruga...

I discovered Cave by the famous YT video: ''World's hardest video game boss''. So I went ahead and imported Mushihimesama on the PS2. Of course it was not the same game. I don't think the 360 port of Futari was released by the time I watched that video.

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil around the end of 2010 is what got me into video games after a long hiatus. Armed Police Batrider blew me away next year.

Didn't really grow up with many shooting games, just some bleh console ones, Gun.Smoke NES was actually the first game I ever beat, like age 5 or something, but that was most probably with continues. dabbled a bit in arcade emulation, but that was just credit feeding. nothing made an impression except for that dolphin... I didn't exactly have the best selections of shmups to emulate.

Espgaluda.

I have had many years experience with STGs prior to ESP but it was the first game I played that really got me into scoring.

Played a lot of Empire of Steel on the Mega Drive as a child, but then didn't touch the genre until discovering Triggerheart Exelica on XBLA, that's what got me hooked, though I don't really like it when compared to the DC port now.

It was Saint Dragon. Played it in local arcade in '94. Still remmeber that wicked boss of stage four. Same year latter I got Neo Geo AES with a few random games and Alpha Mission 2. So that's two shmups that dragged me into the genre.
I need no games without lolis. Nuclear blast wind blowing some skirts off = instant awesomeness.

Got hooked as a kid with 1943 on NES (still know the soundtrack by heart), got serious-ish in college with Triggerheart Exelica, and now I'm starting to get for-real-serious because I live near some absolutely hype shmup arcades.

Space Invaders, Galaxian, Galaga and Star Force were among the first games I played in the arcade. I fell in love with Gradius, R-Type, Salmander after that. Salamander probably being my favourite at the time due to the hoizontal and vertical scrolling levels and 2 player.
