STG Weekly #15: Under Defeat

Post by Aquas »

Schedule for this STGW is Saturday March 30th Noon CST. Currently we're considering iconoclast's fail 2-ALL replay (SPOILERS!) of UD HD.

Commentators open to comment are Ratikal and Medal, though I'm still open to having more qualified experts on the game to volunteer their knowledge for the episode. I hear CIT and BBH are some of those people. Will be shooting them PMs.

I'd like to see a replay with the HD widescreen mode if possible (in addition to the 2-All standard mode of course).

Having gotten live expert commentary from Kiken on UD before, I totally recommend him for the job if he wants to do it.

I'd second Kiken. I've only looped the game once so I'd be talking from the stand point from someone still learning the game. Best I could probably do is make explosion sounds on all the cool rocket chains.

It appears I will be predisposed this weekend. I am interested to hear what BBH has to say though.

Hey so far we have ratikal confirmed for this week's ep March 30th, 12 noon CST. Anyone else who has played Under Defeat HD and wants to commentate? No need to be a super expert, just enough to talk about gameplay/mechanics. We need all levels of experience to help out the viewers! Please PM either me or Aquas.

Cheers,
F

I wouldnt mind coming to watch it live if I'm on at that time. If you don't mind me asking, what is the IRC channel you use?

It's twitch.tv's irc "network"

You can connect via an IRC client if you desire, otherwise the in-browser chat is there.

The server name is yourtwitchID.jtvirc.com

and you need to enter your twitch password into your irc client as well to login and then join #stgweekly

Cheers. I actually noticed that will be 4am my time, and being Easter I probably won't be up then, but I know for the future at least.

Great episode guys, apart from the spam-chat (STG stream monsters?)

Iconoclast makes it look easy but the fact that you need to time and aim each of your option shots gives the game more depth than one might think at first glance.

Also, great job on the commentary everybody!

EDIT: Also, it was good to see that I wasn't the only one who bombed on the stage 5 spider tanks :D

Hah! That's the point where I just go bomb-crazy. I'm awful at these parts in games where mechs surround you, like the two in the middle of the last stage of Zero Gunner 2.

I didn't realize the pink-haired character was a girl until I saw those images in the second loop.

Cool episode, thank you, those graphics really are nice. I'd like to see Senko No Ronde (orig or DUO), it sounds super interesting but i dunno if I'd like it (or even if it would make for a good ep..)

It's more of a fighting game than a shmup so idk how it could be made into an episode, but if it's featured at some point would be great if Enhasa could commentate(best western player I've seen, really good Karel B and Fabian B)

Neither, I always assumed it was a shota.

Oh my god, the last boss has slowdown 100% of the time?? The stepping-through-vulcan-cannon-streams part is where I always lose my lives.. I could totally 1cc this version! :D

Great episode, and I fully agree. Under Defeat has awesome explosions and smoke. I was also very impressed with the dodging. It's really hard to get used to the hitbox and weird trajectory of the enemy projectiles in this game, and those dodges were amazing.

I couldn't stop laughing when Janeki just rambled on during stage 1 while other people were talking  At first I thought he was super focused on commentating and blocked out everyone else but turned out it was technical difficulties :D

Definitely picked up some boss strategies I want to try. I always end my game at the canyon boss, but that tactic looked do-able.

Yeah it seemed as if anytime there was silence and someone decided to talk, at least two people were talking at the same time every time!

I really need to work on my commentary. There is either like a million things or nothing going on in my head and I usually end up commenting on something unimportant. For example during the stage 4 boss all I mentioned was the difference (while making a shitty piss joke) when the big thing is the spotlight.

I really feel like I didn't do a good job to present this game. It's really a lot of fun to go and execute your plans for the stages, but I feel like I probably fell short on that enthusiasm. Sorry guys.

I thought you did a great job! Yeah, the spotlight needs to be talked about more. There's a trick for doing tap-timing as you're being blinded-- you have to kind of walk up the stream slowly. There are some easier alternatives, too (like staying the fuck out of the way and hitting it at an angle with a rocket :P)

I'm not sure who mentioned it, but I didn't know that about the st5 midboss with regards to freezing in place vs. moving when reacting to his attacks. Now I want to replay this game.

Any tips on getting the timing down for getting through the last boss's second form's vulcan spray? I can never manage to get the timing down all the way. And I was also wondering why on the last boss he stands right next to the tank's turret instead of more out in the middle. Doesn't that make it easier to collide with the tank when the wind blast hits?

When you're close to the center (but not in the center of the screen), tap once into the pattern between the shots, then pause for a moment (don't tap or move at all... you should be pretty much in the middle of the screen), then tap once more in the same direction through the other side of the shots. I believe the pause in the middle is what most people seem to have trouble with.

Also, he sits close to the turret so he can milk the rear edge for points (simply by firing at it). Because of the angle, he's already at the top edge of the playfield, so he can't be pushed up any further.

Somebody was going on about the extended/arrange tracks for UD at one point in the video I heard. Did the awesome guitar solo extended tracks actually make it into UDHD? and that video seems to have helped me get back to halfway decent at the game. Great show this week!

Yeah they did, as arrange. Unfortunately, you can't play the New Order tracks in Arcade mode.
