Listening to Nunslaughter - Hells Unholy Wrath and Joel Grind's Yellowgoat Sessions. Both are great thrash/black metal - serious low fi goodness.

I picked up the new David Bowie album today (The Next Day). It's not the second coming of Jesus as so many were quick to suggest, but it is excellent, very listenable and a nice mixture of styles. I'm struggling to pick my favourite track, most have something to offer - the initial single release is possibly one of the weaker tracks.

The Asphodells' Ruled By Passion Destroyed By Lust
What first sounds like a series of "decent tracks" gels into a cohesive acid house/electro-dub album with Weatherall on vocals. Love it. Growers are always the best.

My current obsession with old skool UK jungle continues with lots of Congo Natty stuff right now (not really albums music, as it's all 12" EPs and singles).

Just in case you haven't gone crazy with Davis yet, the rule of thumb is don't go beyond 'on the corner'. Basically, almost every album by the man is worth hearing and regardless of what Ken fucking Burns had to say, Davis was the most influential man in Jazz. Pretty much invented everything after the 30's short of the west coast/latin jazz fusion. Can't go wrong with hardly anything in his catalog...it's all gold.

I heartily agree! Although i do dig Big Fun, Get Up With It, and Dark Magus, all of which i believe came out after On The Corner.

And yeah, fuck Ken Burns. It's been...well, over a decade since i watched that miniseries. But as i recall, John Coltrane, who was also incredibly influential*, and is the closest thing to a deity i've ever had, barely rated three minutes in that whole thing.

*Not as much as Miles, of course

REALLY??!! I didn't mean to include them. Perhaps I should have said after the Pangea/Agartha double live sets that all came from one day and was the end of the Davis that was always a few years ahead of everyone else.

To the best of my knowledge, the Big Fun and Get Up With It (the later being one of my favorite albums of all time) are collections of material that was mostly recorded before On The Corner, but you know how Jazz is with sessions showing up from everywhere. A lot of times I trust the way the artist arranged those tracks and hate how a lot of later collections (see some of the coltrane boxes) put all the material in chronological order. Anyway, different rant!

I never got through the whole series because I couldn't get past Ken Burns agenda and I didn't feel like the series really served the music per se. That said, If they only gave Coltrane 3 minutes, and I can imagine Monk and Mingus got similar treatment, I don't think I ever want to finish that series. I understand the people who don't get free jazz, but if you really think Armstrong and Ellington in the 30's were better than Coltrane, Davis and Monk in the 50's/60's, you should definitely consider fucking yourself.

Cardiacs - Special Garage Concerts vol 1 and 2
Still not over my Cardiacs addiction... this has a bunch of songs from Seaside, Toy World, and other stuff that only came out on cassette or when they were still called Cardiac Arrest... performed live, recorded beautifully, and in some cases sped way the hell up. My love for Tim Smith just keeps growing, he is my favorite poet and composer...

Monodeer - glitch pop

So good. Been listening to his older albums a lot lately too. I really like the way he builds his tracks and evolves things, expanding melodies and rhythms as the songs progress.

Tommy Creep - Evil Scientist

Awesome horrorcore/chipstep fusion. Really like the aggression and driving beats on this one. His older albums are also worth a listen, but they aren't quite as polished.

What do you mean? The genre's? I don't make 'em up, but when describing a style of music it's generally easiest to use the terms others use for it. Otherwise, you are left saying 'it sounds like 'x' band', which is not helpful if you aren't familiar with that other artist, or a genre in general. I could have said it was simply 'chiptunes' or 'gameboy muzak', but that is a fairly broad scope and really doesn't give much indication on the style; 'chiptunes' covers a HUGE array of different styles, and liking one certainly doesn't mean you will like others. It would be like calling all rock and roll, 'rock'. Would you equate something like the Grateful Dead to Nickel Back? They are both technically 'rock' after all. This is why we have sub genres like 'prog rock', or in Nickel Back's case, 'utter shit'. It's no different with using titles like 'chipstep' or 'horrorcore'. These are sub-genre's, whether you are aware of them or not.

You even used sub-genre titles in your post - death/black/grind/core metal. No different, except one is within your scope, and the ones you question are not. To each their own. Plus, we all know there is only POWER METAL!! \m/ \m/  As an outsider, it's all metal; same deal here with the chip stuff. If you were into chip, or electronic stuff in general, these terms probably wouldn't seem odd to you.

There are so many different kinds of music these days, especially electronic stuff, that it becomes tricky to classify. That being said, classifying music may not be the best thing, but it certainly makes it easier to find bands of a similar vein or discuss with others 'in the know'.

I know you are just being crotchety and old, I fall into the same thing often. It's all good till someone walks on our lawns...

RGC wrote:You got me there, old and set in my ways alright - almost ready for the chair on the porch. Actually, I couldn't tell you the difference between death/grind etc. It's all just metal to me, and a lot of it isn't to my taste. I think we're a bit hasty to invent new genre labels on the basis of 'oh it's exactly like this other genre except there's a little cymbal sound in the background if you listen carefully'. I mean, how many of these artists are truly genre-defying/defining. I like some metal, some rock, some electronic, some jazz, some classical, and some folk. It's arbitrary, but that seems like enough categories to me. Now get orf my lawn!! ;-)
Well, check out the links I posted. They are both Bandcamp so you can stream for free, the Monodeer album is like 4euros if you really like it and the Tommy Creep stuff is free.

I honestly only use sub-genre distinctions when I post in threads like this, since I am trying to convey the style of music in a couple words, so interested parties will see it and go 'I like that stuff' and check it out. If I just called it 'chiptune', dudes like Udderdude who are really into the actual VGM side of chiptunes, like music from NES games etc, might check it out and HATE it...'THIS IS NOT REAL CHIPTUNES!!!   '. These sub-genre distinctions help alleviate some of this.

At the same time, I will agree that sometimes this whole sub-sub-sub-genre thing can get pretty silly, but for stuff like 'horrorcore' or 'chipstep' they are pretty distinct. I guess you could say 'dubstep with gameboiz', or 'horror influenced dubstep infused aggressive electronic music', but that's a mouthful, and if you are actually interested in these genre's, the associated terms hold meaning. The thing to consider is sub-genre distinctions are more for fans of the overall genre; outsiders wouldn't see the distinctions, or the need for them.

Also, I iz bored at work.

RGC wrote:I'll have a listen later when I have access to a proper computer. Horrorcore sounded intriguing til you explained it. You couldn't tell from the name that it has anything to do with dubstep.
It doesn't really, I was more describing Tommy Creep, which is dubstep-ish(read: heavy bass) with obvious horror references, both in the samples and melodies; also really busy and aggressive. You might like it. Check out the first track. Can't hurt. If you like metal, you may well enjoy this; similar energy.

Monodeer is more minimal glitch hop style with some dubstep influence. This stuff is more laid back, but heavy grooves and BASS!!

Both artists use a gameboy to craft their music.

I don't really like throwing around 'dubstep' because it's an immediate turn off for those who view dubstep as only Skrillex or abundance of 'WUB WUB WUB'z, when it can be more than that. Again, distinctions don't stand out to those on the outside looking in, it only sounds the same if you don't know what you are listening to or have very limited exposure to it. Dubstep to me is pretty much drum n bass with heavy, glitchy hip hop-ish beats or sumfin, it's not as narrowly defined as some would think. Personally, I don't associate Skrillex with what I consider Dubstep.

My drummer loves Skrillex. I'm not a fan, but can appreciate his production techniques, if not his overall sound.

In other news, I'm rambling. Is it 5 yet?

Completely by accident i got into Jason Molina/Songs Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co. a number of years ago - was busy tidying my pit of a room and i started playing "Magnolia Electric Co." on what i thought was a recommendation of a friend. A shockingly poor memory had meant i'd downloaded the completely wrong album by the completely wrong artist. The first track started playing and very quickly it dawned on me that this was , infact, alt country - now i'm open to just about any genre of music but Country has been the big one i simply hadn't been able to get into. I was going to head to the PC to stop it from playing but as i was trapped behind a number of boxes of crap so i let it play.... and , thank the stars i did, album is fantastic. Very dark and, in light of the recent sad passing of Molina at the age of 39 after years of battling alcoholism, pretty down in it's depiction of his battles with his demons - "Almost Was Good Enough"

So yeah, right now, basically just replaying it on repeat. RIP J Molina.
