The two paragraphs address the two questions separately. The first is why you shouldn't consider a PS3 revision as a great shmup console by virtue of it playing PSX and PS2 games. The second being why judging based on console exclusives alone will be a pretty dull discussion vs including ports (as we are quite clearly doing).

There's a lot of rules for such a simple proposition (from first post): "Thought I'd open a thread where we get to look back on all the consoles from past to present, and create a top 5 ranking list for order of awesomeness".

So what you actually meant was create a top 5 ranking list for order of awesomness in relation to games actually published for that machine?

That in itself raises some interesting questions some of which were mentioned concerning the PS3.

In the age of download stores, why souldn't you be able to include the fact that someone new to consoles (who has no desire to buy a PSX) thinks the PS3 is better for shmups than a XBOX because of the PSX and PS2 library that he has access to on his PS3 through PSN?

Frankly the whole idea is pretty silly because there are lots of systems with only a handful of amazing games, which many people would say warrant the purchase of that system, and it comes at no cost to owning other consoles (for most people) and games, whereas polls like this propagate the myth that you can do better buying shit games (after going through the many excellent titles, of course) to fill your 30th and 40th game slot for the PC-Engine than buying the #1 title for another system

The PSN version of PS1 games have added input lag, so personally I don't consider their existence to be a selling point. And yes, I've tested it myself in a direct comparison using the same display input.

It's just that I have noticed that ps3's can have input lag on certain tv's that are fine for other consoles.

Did you follow the original thread this came from and sought to rectify? If you didn't, it was a bunch of people voting for PC's as their favourite 'console', based on the fact it emulates everything.

Apologies if you didn't see it, but it's been made pretty clear by now that you're voting for games physically released on a given console during its lifetime.

For example, counting Ikaruga on DC makes more sense than voting it as an XBLA title.

I'd lose more sleep over people not understanding this is forty-one people hadn't already understood and voted correctly.

Not at all, there's no way I can influence the vote is there? The only thing I did was create a new thread with clearer guidelines not to include PC's/emulation to determine the best 'shmup' console.

Seems everything on the forum has some ulterior motive these days.

I'd be interested to see a ranking of consoles according to their number of unique, non arcade-port shmups. But that would simply be a matter of counting, not voting.

Amazed by all the Dreamcast love. Had some good shmups but I never felt it was a 'shmup console' in the same way as the mega drive, for example.

The indies you mentioned and the fact that to this day it still sees a decent amount of releases, makes it very deserving of a spot in my eyes.

To everyone who didn't have their head up their ass enough to understand the simplicity of not involving emulation/PC's and backwards compatibility in the vote for your fave shmup console, thanks for joining in the fun; I'm curious to see how the results work out tomorrow. Also has NG:dev's games Last Hope, Fast Striker and there upcoming game, DUX, their new Caravan game Ghost Blade! The Dreamcast is on top on my lift. But I chose on what I play most on. My list follows.

Well, I can see two ways of looking at it. One is to rate hardware platforms from the players' perspective and consider everything that can be played on it: original games, ports, emulations, and backwards-compatible titles. It's not very important to someone just wanting to play a game to understand the method behind it running on his machine, only that it does run, and run well.

The second is from the development perspective and consider only the games native to the platform. These games exist because that platform existed, and the hardware's capabilities influenced their design.

What I don't see the rationale of is rating platforms by their original titles and just one of the three methods of running non-native games. I'm not saying there's no reason to break it down that way, just that I don't get it. Is it because of commercial releases? Commercial games like Konami's deluxe packs use emulation and not porting, though, and the current crop of consoles have purchasing ROMs for emulation built-in.
