The Vedio Games Insdustory Ignore Women for years?!

Post by SAM »

I recently read an aritcle in News Week stating that the Vedio Game insdustry is now putting some more efforts in attracting more female gamers into playing vedio games.

What I am interested in is what is the sex of our fellows shumpers? I notice that there might be more girls amoung us than the game insdustry is expacted.

Case 1
I know a girl use to come to the acrade with her boyfriend. She would then play shumps while her boyfriend sitting near by watching megazine. I run into them every time I go to that acrade centre, they must be going there quite regularly.

Case 2
I once seen a girl, who is *not playing very well* (this is how she describe her skill level). 1cc MushiHimeSama Manic in the acrade. Well, the point is she must be a shumps devotee, as casual gamers cann't do this.

Case 3
Even my sister play some cutem'up, like Gunbird 2, Cotton 2, TTS, etc.
*Meow* I am as serious as a cat could possible be. *Meow*

Err, no. The shooter community is pretty much 99% male (unfortunately). If you want more females, try puzzlers, RPGs, and games involving animals.

Women will also enjoy things that are marketing to men, but that doesn't change the primary focus.

That said, Popcap and the like have done very well for themselves by going for middle-age women. The adventure genre also has a higher than average female fanbase.

I don't think there's 1% of females here.

Alteka used to post here, but I haven't seen her around lately. Completely unrelated, I remember her having an awesome collection of toy mechas.

US chooses to ignore women.

That's it right there.

Explains where there are so many female Japanophiles... :D
There are more females than just Minzoku at shmups?

I have no idea what it would be like if I saw a girl in person play a shmup better than I do. I would just..........die. As in that would be so awesomeriffic, I would be at her feet.

Well I bought my girl Ms. Pac-man (the pcb) for her birthday and to look at her playing Ms. Pac-man on my 25" monitor cab is sweet. She has no idea that Japan has numerous games for girls, not that only pac-man and puzzle games apply to women, but yes most games 'aimed' toward women have no violence in them.

My wife is addicted to Puzzle Bobble (1,2,3,&4) but has no interest in trying a shmup. She does watch me play sometimes for a minute or two.

I vote "Male" since I'm a dude.

Haha, it was definitely a girl. But you're right, it is hard to tell these days, like in Thailand, and those Maury Provich shows.

I've said this before, but my GF likes Donpachi a lot. She's also played the other two console 'Pachis with me. Her favorite games are The Sims series, with Panel de Pon a distant second, though, so that pretty much adheres to the "chick gamer" stereotype.

I just want to know who voted "None of the Above"

...or maybe I don't.

Wasn't Pacman an attempt to include the ladies? I think mostly good things will come from trying to market games for women.

If only I could get my wife to play a videogame. Wait, I take that back. She did play Taito drum master, and she was better than I at that one.

My mom used to be very good at Dr. Mario. Much better than I am, and she doesn't play video games as much as I do.

Most girls that i've met like at least one videogame. Mario Bros or Tetris usually.

Although I did know this one chick that was a Squaresoft fan. She'd try to copy Yoshitaka Amano's artwork.

Klonoa made my last girlfriend cry. She was a tetris plus fan also.

I've never met a girl that liked shmups. I got one of my girlfriends to play Radiant Silvergun once with me. She just kept on using the homing weapon and nothing else.

Most gals I know will play a game or two of something from time to time, but definitely don't devote as much of their schedule to playing games as I do (or, I'd assume, most "guy gamers" do). If I ask one "Hey, want to play a game or two of this with me?" they'll often agree, and play for a few minutes, while if one of my male friends is over, we can sit there and yell at the screen for hours. Not sure if that's been "documented" any more widely than this, but that's at least what I observed...gals don't mind video games, but seem to like them in much smaller doses than guys do, at least around here.

My GF must be a bit of an oddity then, as she likes her games as much as the next guy. Plays a lot of retro and shmups, more casually than I do, but nonetheless... And she's forever fucking my runs up by wanting to join in mid-game, 'specially with Trizeal, Shiki 2 and DDP. She just finished God Of War, is almost done with Pariah and Haunting Ground, and already has her eye on the 360. And she's damn sexy to boot, so it could be said that I'm a pretty lucky guy.

So true. And sigged.

Actually, I sit in front of this one girl in English, plays Kirby in SSBM. I also think she has an SNES with *gasp* Final Fantasy VI! Need to buy it off her sometime.

I think the biggest problem is that women are inherently worse at games. For instance, my roommate (a girl) and I will get a new shooter and start playing it at the same time. We will play for approximately the same amount of time, but if we compare scores in 3 weeks, mine is always way higher. While this is only one example, I've never encountered girls who are able to develop skills at a game as fast as most guys.

Perhaps is has something to do with hand eye cordination. Maybe it has to do with some sort of psychological approach gamer or non-gamer girls have to gaming.

That's just one example. One of our members has talked about a girl he saw in Japan. She no-missed Ketsui or something to that effect.

I was going to say something about how girls approach games differently and why they like RPGs more, but then I remembered how there are VERY capable Tetris-players (and Bejeweled, of course) who are women. Maybe it's all the explosions and bullets and the steeper learning curves that keep women away from shmups.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Well I don't think so, you just played much more other shumps than her. My sister use to scores higher and survive longer given about the same playing time. I play a lots better than her now after a lot of pratice.

Trouble is - racing games for example, make very good games. Killing people makes for very good games. Girls tend not to show as much interest in this type of thing. One thing I have noticed though, Rainbow Six Black Arrow - this is a first person tactical shooter, the ratio of women on that game is FAR higher than anything similar - and many of them are really quite good at it.

That may be the case, however I recall reading some study that, on average, women have slower reaction times, and worse hand eye coordination than men. I'd be interested in reading it again if someone wanted to find some information about it.

This study (if even true) could reflect a great deal of things. Perhaps women have worse coordination because they less play games. Perhaps they approach the test in a less competitive way. It could be a possible cause of why women are less attracted to action games though.

Not to say that some women aren't good at games, but they do seem to be the exception.
