The HitBox Paddies Episode 1

Post by ondafly »

Hi All,

76Usagi and myself decided to give this podcasting/vidcasting yoke a go, we called it the Hitbox Paddies (because we're Irish) and released on St.Patrick's Day by pure coincidence ! ! so here we have our first effort, a longish video showing our favorite shmups (Raiden & Ketsui) and the pair of us chatting over them. Stuffiwrote promises to join in at some time  Just to point out, I'm no master at any shmups really, but Usagi's play of Raiden is excellent

The video can be seen here on my youtube channel 30 or so minutes long - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWjc0EPOV7A

Also
76Usagi's channel - http://www.youtube.com/76usagi
Raiden footage - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeYE78LxlGo

Full disclosure section

Intro music - Ketsui Level 4
Intro Background - from google, and I can't find original owner
Images used inbetween gameplay, all from google but the best being from ShmupsForum for the Zoolander/Ketsui, which I think belonged in a Kernow thread about Ketsui

In other words - if any owners of the above want their bits taken down, please let me know !

PS we reckon you'll be our harshest critics - so be soft and gentle with us

Watched this yesterday and I really enjoyed it. As far as skill level, I wouldn't worry too much. I happen to like seeing stages of progression, everything doesn't always need to be a superplay.

What do you have in mind for content in the future?

For a genre that really fits well with streams/commentary, it's nice to see more of it starting to surface.

I had a little bit of trouble hearing your voices clearly at certain times (i.e. either the game audio was a bit loud or your voices were a bit quiet), but I really liked what I've seen of it overall. Looking forward to more!

More shmup commentary just not sure what games yet. As you mention, we're not experts of the genre, just fans.

Probably the latter with the voices sorry. This podcast stuff is something new to me anyway so need to pay more attention to what I say and how I say it. :)

So awesome to see another shmup show. The more the merrier! I used to hang out with a group of Irish girls in Berkeley, CA during the summer. They were architecture students from Trinity College. <3 <sigh> those were the days. I didn't date any of them but we just hung out a lot. They were so friendly and liked to get crazy too though.

Cheers Mau - I was a bit concerned about the skill levels etc - but I think reaction has been positive, so I'll just continue plugging away at the games. As for future stuff, between us we have a pretty decent collection of shmup PCBs, so probably the next one will be more of the same.

Nice! Was fun to watch.

I didn't really notice any problem with the voice volume, so I guess it wasn't too bad.

Ok - I just had a blast on raiden using MAME on my Mac. I managed to get to stage 2's Boss then I died! I must say that it offers up a nice level of challenge and it's not too much and not too little - just right to make it interesting. Not sure why but I am sure the Bullets and Projectiles 'feel' faster using this Emulator than what I see in your Video using the PCB. I agree the Music in Stage 2 is brilliant. I own raiden Project but I haven't played it for Years - many thanks for reminding me how great this seminal Shmup actually is :)

also checkout Raiden 2 - I kinda prefer it, but Usagi I think has a major broner for the original Raiden !

Yes, I have played raiden 2 on raiden-Project - I like the 'Big Purple Laser' the most. I haven't played it for Years. I think that I'm going to concentrate on raiden for a while as it has a lot to offer wrt Challenge - a Developer could pick up a lot of Insight into tuning Difficulty through experiencing this Shmup.

Excellent stuff. It's a great game alright, lovely graphics and sound, nothing complicated about the scoring and provides a nice challenge too. :D

Yep, I never really play Raiden 2 much. The first couple of levels are a carbon copy of the first game and the plasma weapon is no fun to play with. Although it does have the medal system which is interesting. But I think I'll sooner sink time into DX or Fighters.
