Because even non-casual gamers will find it incredibly unforgiving, and very difficult. Because this kind of gameplay design doesn't appeal to many gamers any more. Because you have to be skilled in videogame ninjitsu (with a bit of knowledge of The Force) to be able to stand a chance of getting anywhere in this game.
That's more than most players are willing to take on.

In all hoensty, (from what I've played) it's no harder than other Cave games... the difficulty alone is obviously not what's pushing people away. It's the "style of difficulty" for lack of a better word. I'd rather be punished for dying and using bombs than by picking up power-ups and weapons. That's just me.

I've just watched the recent hameko vids where some bosses are being timed out.
I'm starting to fear that it's a serious balancing issue that keeps players away. If timing out bosses on a regular base is the best approach to a competitive highscore, then I fear for the worst.

Is that really the case? Or were they just showing off a boss retreat? I hear some of the bullet patterns are hell without bombs but am still very interested.Imhotep wrote: I'm starting to fear that it's a serious balancing issue that keeps players away. The only thing genuinely wrong with Ibara are the bloody machine gun options, which you end up avoiding like they're bullets after about two minutes. It's a strangely obvious oversight on Caves part but the game has more than enough to offer to make up for it.
Ultimately though the arcade visiting Cave otaku didn't really lap up the Raizing tribute thing and missed their pink blobs. It's hovered around the bottom of the Arcadia Top 10 when Mushi hovered around the top. I fear it will be skipped. A port of Galuda 2 is twice as likely.

Having played Garegga a bit recently, and then Ibara 3 days ago (really liked it btw), I find that the bullets in Ibara are nowhere near as difficult to see as the BG ones.GaijinPunch wrote:Then that only leaves the other major problem -- figuring out what's a bullet and what's not.
Even if there's MUCH more explosions/shrapnels/debris going on in Ibara.
My sales thread : 2020/07/20..MASTER.VER.
Yeah, I have no issues at all when it comes to seeing the bullets in Ibara. And as far as the enemy bosses are concerened they rarly retreat on me, as I just love dismanteling them and then destroying them.
They are very tough though and I agree, with one of the previous posts. I think the lack in popularity is just because the Cave fanboys, didn't get what they wanted. Ibara ended up being a Raizing game, with NONE of the usual Cave attributes (apart from the Cave logo at the begining of the demo movie).
I love Cave and Raizing in EQUAL mesure, and I happen to think that Ibara is a masterpiece in gameplay and design. I'm also glad that the price is dropping, as more people can realistically buy it and hopefully contribute to the Hi-Scores thread.

Ikaruga review now up in PLASMA BLOSSOM
I don't know, but with Garegga still being popular, I don't weigh the superficial critisism on Ibara too heavily.Ganelon wrote:Is that really the case? Or were they just showing off a boss retreat? I guess we will have to wait and see. I thought Ibara looked really good, and it was good that it wasn't another normal Cave style game.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I bet this game would have had a better reception if Raizing was still around and they actually had their logo plastered on it. It's unfortunate, but since Cave is the opening logo, most people were probably expecting their usual Cave offering. Now that's perfectly fine. After all, Cave really has a style I don't see in any other shmup company, and that sets them apart and makes them unique. So as a result, when people play Ibara and find out that it's not the Cave title they were expecting, they don't care about it.
...
I had the chance to play Ibara in an arcade when i was in Japan last week, it seemed a lot like Battle Garegga, ie collecting medals and it has the ability to destroy each segment of the boss. didn't manage to get past 1st stage though, only put Y200 in though (£1.00). i must say i liked it a lot, though i never put too much money into arcade machines as im not that rich

Me too i rather have Ketsui, and them maybe later on Espgaulda 2. I'm also really interested in if Cave makes a sequel to Mushi. Well any shmup released is great news for PS2. I have a lot of great PS2 shmups as of now and i'm loving it. Man i never taught PS2 was ever going to have such a great shmup library when i purchased the system in 2001. For everyone else, just be positive and you will definitely see a Ketsui or Ibara in PS2's future. If its going be on PS3 then i have to wait couple years, which would suck.
Its always funny that Cave see's all their newest shmups being ported on consoles(PS2 mainly thank god for Arika and taito) but they are not in the console market. I wonder how many more years till they figure out to stick and make a partnership with Arika or even taito, to release their latest shmup games in Japan.
P.S does anyone think that they will make another Dondopachi for PS2 or is PS3 the next.
