Need SLG 3000 Help (preferably on the cheap)

Post by BitFaced »

After looking for help on another forum, I was pointed here for more expert advice. I basically want to use the SLG 3000 but get a reasonable idea of how much I'm going to be paying for, how I'd use it in my setup and what exactly I'd need(After seeing how much a SLG 3000/Scaler/CGAtoVGA combination usually goes for).

Setup:
(All items listed below are European/PAL unless stated otherwise)(All Consoles use red/yellow/white video/audio cables in a SCART adapter)

TV: Technika 21.6" LCD TV (Model X21.6/54G-GW-TCDU-UK)(Has VGA port)
Consoles: Wii, PS1 (Original Model), PS2 (Original Model), GameCube
Planned: NTSC N64 (American Red/Yellow/White cables), RetroGen Adapter

I know I need RGB Scart cables for these consoles (non-planned), which I assume are these:

http://www.play.com/Games/GameCube/4-/1 ... w={keyword}
https://www.google.co.uk/shopping/produ ... CFMQ8wIwAQ
Although you probably need the ones with extra non-SCART cables...

I also know I need to modify a Scaler/CGA2VGA to accept SCART, but can you use a 5-way multi-SCART adapter in place of the connector?
I've heard only early NTSC N64s can be modded for RGB, so how do I tell them apart? Plus, I plan on always using a Tri-Star 64 with it and I've heard that can be modded for RGB (It only uses component or composite cables), so could I just only mod that? And can I use RGB or component cables with the RetroGen?

With PAL 50Hz systems I wouldn't go the CGA2VGA way - only gives you problems like choppy scrolling.

What way should I go then? I could use SLG SCART but that has inferior image quality (less scanlines).

Cheap scanlines on PAL material are hard to accomplish, because the VGA input on your TV set is limited to 60Hz.

I see, Are you saying I might have to look into getting a SLG SCART?
Otherwise, what are the best output methods for these consoles.

well, if you want scanlines and NO framerate conversion you need:

LINEDOUBLER w/ RGB input > SLG3000 > VGA to HDMI or VGA to Component converter.

A linedoubler or scaler with RGB inputs starts at about 100 EUR (iScan HD).

Forget about the SLG Scart. The TriStar can be modded, yes. RetroGen doesn't have RGB or component.

Do you know anything about this device, Fudoh?

yes, I do. Not good.

Also it doesn't solve your VGA/50Hz problem.

You could always just swap your PS1 and PS2 for NTSC models. Wii would be fine as-is just set to 60hz and most Gamecube games support 60hz too.

One consideration is that I could just use the N64/Tri-Star 64/RetroGen Adapter separately through Component or SCART since:
- I need to mod the Tri-Star 64 (which could be hard unless someone gives me a guide...)
- The fact that RetroGen Adapter can't do component/RGB
- The fact I'd like the Tri-Star 64/RetroGen to be linked to the TV as the same time (through a multi-adapter like this one:http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4 ... AA300_.jpg) so I wouldn't have to switch between the two and it'd go to N64 on the screen directly onto RetroGen on the screen.
Again, I would get the Line Doubler but it's price is a little out of my range (I'm willing to spend £50 or £60 to make consoles look good on a HDTV).
Now, if the scanlines route fails or is inferior, what inputs are the best for PAL PS1 (sorry I've already owned two of the same model of the same console), PAL PS2, 60hz NGC & 60hz Wii without needing scanlines for general HDTVs?

Bump/Double Post, but I had to since this thread currently isn't moving and I've yet to solve my problem.
Not much to ask that wasn't in my previous post but:

-There is, of course, the prospect of consoles that look good on my HD TV without using scan lines and through a specific output (In this case HD*-quality instead of scan lines, and perhaps I could use scan lines for 2D games and HD methods for 3D games) . Although I don't know what outputs for what consoles would achieve that. Not to mention how some PS2 games can be booted in HD through GS Mode Selector (although I'm not sure what output I would use from there).

All in all, the main idea was to do this at a relatively cheap scale, like maybe in the £50 to £70 range, otherwise I could just get a CRT TV, SLG SCART or just the best outputs for the consoles for a HDTV. I think I'll just give up if it goes over say £100, as it's not in my best interest to go that high (especially with the whole "just get an older TV" thing).

*Not necessarily High Definition, just looking really high quality, clear and crisp (or at least, pretty damn good) on a HD TV and/or CRT.

There simply is nothing you can do at this budget. For NTSC-only setups there are solutions (like iScan Pro + MiniSLG), but for any PAL system that won't work anymore and it gets a lot more expensive and complicated.

So SLG SCART or old TV altogether then?

The Scart SLG just puts 120 (or 144 PAL) lines across the screen. I don't see how that would help the quality in any way.

So should I just get an old CRT TV? Because that would be much cheaper and easier.
