Japanese PS2 thread

Post by Nana »

So I finally picked one of these bad boys up! The sexy white one, to be exact. I'm having a great time with it so far, but I'm not too familiar with the console's library outside of shmups. So, please recommend me stuff! I'm not really into racing games (sorry Ghegs), so I'll have to pass on any of those. I do however, absolutely love weird shit. Things without technically good gameplay but are bizarre enough to be of interest are right up my alley, as well as actually good action games, adventure games, stylish things, I dunno!

Oh, and I also heard that EDF2 doesn't work on a specific model of the slim -- mine is the Ceramic White SCPH-79000 model. Can anyone verify if there's any truth to this, and if so, would my model be able to play it?

Are there any games similar to LSD: Dream Emulator or Yume Nikki where the gameplay is focused around aimless wandering?

I'm also very interested in the Simple Series, so does anyone know some standout titles from there?

I don't actually speak Japanese yet, so things playable without much/any Japanese knowledge would be preferable. I'll get back to you guys in a couple years when I know enough to start going after RPGs 8)

Thank you all for your time.

The 'Tales of' PS2-exclusive games (Destiny Remake: Director's Cut, Destiny 2, Rebirth) are pretty awesome if you're looking for RPGs. I don't speak/read any Japanese either and I had a blast playing 'em (Rebirth's got an amazing translation FAQ available), and their battle systems are fun and easy to pick up without needing much knowledge of the language.

It should also be able to play PSX Japanese games, so you could also pick up stuff like Umihara Kawase Shun.

Oh right! JPS1 suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well. Is Love & Destroy worth playing without Japanese knowledge? Thanks for the suggestion, regardless. I've actually never played a tales game before though, so I'd probably want to check out one of the ones in english first before going all-out and getting one of the japanese ones.

If you like classic Mega Drive/Genesis stuff, look into snagging some of the various Sega classic collections by M2. All of them include the option to run the game in either Japanese or English (assuming it was released outside of Japan). Monster World Collection and the Treasure Box are both excellent (240p, 480i, and 480p display modes included).

Of course, I'm also going to suggest Suchie Pai IV (a personal favourite of mine), however, mahjong might not be your thing.

Sega Ages Fantasy Zone
Sega Ages Galaxy Force II
Sega Ages Treasure Box
Taito Memories Gekan
Taito Memories Joukan
Taito Memories II Gekan
Taito Memories II Joukan
The Rumble Fish

You can probably just play all this PS2 stuff on emulators now.

Whoah! There's a ton of great answers in here. Thank you all very much!

@KAI: Thanks for the input on L&D. ACE sounds exactly like the kind of thing I'm into [ROBOTS ROBOTS ROBOTS]. I had no idea there was a Melty Blood game for the PS2 either. Sweet. Psychic Force looks awesome too -- the concept of a flying fighting game is wholly radical. A lot of these other ones look great too, I wrote them down and I'm going through them one by one on youtube. Thanks!

I do have to say I'm a bit disappointed by "Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix 2 Tokumori" though. It doesn't look bad, but for a second I thought that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nk2wViKSh_M might have been a real thing, and you sent my hopes crashing through the roof :(

@pestro87: Chain Dive looks fucking awesome. I looked up a couple more videos; I absolutely LOVE games with free or unusual flying, and this one looks extremely stylish and slick to boot. Thanks!

@NTSC-J (and by extent KAI): Games that also had a release in the EU are absolutely fine, since I only otherwise have an NTSC-U PS2, and they wouldn't work on my TV anyway. Gekisha Boy 2 looks incredibly silly, and like it'd be a lot of fun. Thanks! As for the 'The Chikyuu Boueigun' games, I did know of them already, yeah, but I really want to know if they'd actually work on my system. I'll try and use the japanese titles when referring to games that had releases outside of Japan from now on. TCB2 especially looks amazing, as there's a character with a /jetpack/. I fucking love jetpacks.

@Kiken: Oh man, I had no idea the Sega Classic Collections had the option for english! Do you happen to know if Phantasy Star and Dragon Force do? That would be AMAZING. That was actually the only reason I haven't purchased the Monster World Collection yet already, so thank you very much for clearing that up!! Unfortunately, yeah, not too into Mahjong :P

@MOSQUITO FIGHTER: I had no idea what Galaxy Force was until just now. This looks fantastic, I love rail shooters. I also wasn't aware of how different the Taito Memories collections were from the American counterparts. I wasn't planning on getting them before, but now I'll have to seriously consider it. Especially for PuLiRuLa and the shmups (also tate support!). As for emulating them, I know you can, but why would you want to? ;)

@Jonathan Ingram: *whistles*, what a list. The Hanjuku Eiyuu games look like a blast, how easy are the mechanics to understand without Japanese, though? Hungry Ghosts and Shadow Tower Abyss were actually two of the main non-shmup games I was interested in for the console, so it gives a bit of extra validity to the rest of your list :). As for Busin 0 and Venus & Braves, same question as with Hanjuku Eiyuu. They look very fun, but the dialogue might be important... As for mojib-ribbon, does playing it make more sense than watching videos? Because I really can't tell what's going on there. Vib-Ribbon rocks, though. Boku no Natsuyasumi looks cute and fun; it reminds me of Chu♥lip. Kamizawa looks cool too, interesting take on the stealth mechanic. As for FFXII, is there any reason to not just get the NTSC-U version, and does this one have english subtitles?

Thank you all for your help! And while I'm here, I might as well point out this game I just found on HG101, which looks pretty damn cool:
http://hardcoregaming101.net/gunbike/gunbike.htm
Image
Transforming robot bikes and 3rd person mech shooting. Life is great.

The one statement in bold above is so it stands out from the rest of this wall of text - I'd really like an answer on this.

I liked Gunbike, but the controls are horrendous.

As far as I know, Phantasy Star Generation 1 & 2 are completely in Japanese.

Speed Power Gunbike is good fun. Has a few faults [stages are a bit longer than I'd like for one, and if you aren't entirely sure of how the direction system works, you will be seeing a lot of Anergy Empty! You all over!], but it's a very cool game still. And I love how some of it's visual look reminds me of Virtual On a bit.

Also, what KAI said, the controls make me want to kick a puppy.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I read that same HG101 piece, but when I tried Gunbike I thought it was terrible.

If you like Metal Slug, the Japanese PS2 standalone Metal Slug 6 is almost certainly the best version of that game (though that game is certainly not the best iteration of Metal Slug).

Yeah, you should get this version if possible. There's a patch to change language if you must, and it makes the game much more balanced, adding lots of material and removing the damage limit. More challenging and long-lasting for sure.

Yeah.. the collections include a ROM selection option where you can choose either the JP MD version or the US Genesis version (which will be in English). They did the exact same thing with the mini triple collections they've recently released on XBLA and PSN (like the newer MW collection which has the option to play all three games in either language... a first for MW IV, BTW). The MW collection for PS2 offers English options for every game except MW IV (since there wasn't an official localization at that point).

Some dude putzing around with the various options in the PS Collection. You can see that he has the version set to Master System for the first game, and when starts up the game, all the in-game text is in English. I'm not too sure about the DF collection though... granted, only the first game was localized, right?

Outside of shmups, huh? Sega Ages is a mixed bag: from lackluster emulation to interesting ports (remakes even). As ultimate versions I'd recommend: Dynamite Dekka remake, Virtual-On enhanced port, NiGHTS remake (the recent "HD" version looks like a straight port of it to me).
Battle Gear 3 is a car game.
NamCollection - all games available separately in the US, but it's quite a collection on one DVD. Mr. Driller is in high-res and Ace Combat 2 is entirely in English (with added Japanese captions).
ADK Tamashii - NOT worth it for Twinkle Star Sprites, WORTH for Ninja Master's and Ninja Commando (possibly Aggressors of Dark Combat too). Nice fat piece of 2 player action. Upscaled and filtered graphics, but only Twinkle Star Sprites took it very bad.
Futari no Fantavision - not sure if music is the only difference between the US version and this.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

Basically, all the Sega Ages remakes (early half of the collection developed by D3) are JP-only (besides ones on the EN-only Sega Classics Collection). All the Sega Ages port collections (latter half of the collection ported by M2) have all regional versions but only ones that already exist. Dragon Force was at the end of the former half and only has JP text.

One interesting PS2 game in terms of "regioning" is Sonic Gems Collection, which adjusts text and Sonic CD's soundtrack to JP and US depending on the console's language. Since you have a JP PS2, you have access to both. For those with US PS2s, Japanese is unfortunately not an option.

If you're into mecha, you may want to try Baldr Force EXE. I'm personally not a fan but it received quite a bit of positive feedback back in the day and there aren't many games that play similarly. Its sequel—Baldr Bullet—is on PS2 as well if you find the original interesting. And if you're looking for weirdness, there's a decent port of Trio the Punch available.

Always wanted to play Busin 0/Neo. Loved Tale of the Forsaken Land.

Also, Fate Unlimited/Codes was localized for the PSP, if that means anything.

Erm, can we talk about this?

It's usually done with some combination of Swap Magic and either a flip-top case or some form of magic key/slide card/whatever implements you want to use to trick the PS2 into thinking the lid is still closed while you swap in your 100% original legit import game that you bought with your own money that you earned shoveling snow for your elderly neighbour.

Swap Magic, a fliptop, and a legit JP region PS2 game work together fine. It's really easy* to install the fliptop anyway [at least on the slim, haven't bothered with my fat because the disc drive on it is all screwy and there's an easy fix, but I couldn't be bothered], I wouldn't bother with a slide card or whatever.

*: as in dirt simple, but it may be time consuming, took me a fair bit to align the stupid lid properly, even though getting to that point and reassembling the system after was stupid easy

Also, because of their manufacturing process apparently [look at the crazy patterns on the bottom, they look like no other CD or DVD I've ever seen], the Swap Magic discs are quite prone to scratches, so keep them safe.

OT:
Sega Ages Virtual On is amazing. Go get that [seems a bit pricey on eBay though].
I want to like Sega Ages Virtua Racing, but all the collisions feel off. And either way, you can get that in the US on some compilation.

It's also worth noting that TSS in an unlockable in the PS2-only sequel, Twinkle Star Sprites: La Petite Princesse.

I'll also recommend Melty Blood: Actress Again, if you're into anime fighters. I know it's not the most recent version, but still pretty impressive stuff on the PS2.

Mm, your best bet would be with independent retro gamestores. The only ones I've ever seen in person were in a store in Boulder, CO called "Game Force," and they were going for $150 used. I would have just gotten swapmagic if I had a slim, but I also wanted to play PS1 games, and it's a lot more harmful to a fat PS2 (requires you to jank the laser/CD tray every time) than a slim one. It would have cost essentially the same to get an american slim + swapmagic as a Japanese PS2 to begin with.

If you want a legit one, I would just test your luck with shmups forum trading station. I got miraculously lucky and got mine for $100.

Thanks again for the new answers! I'll have a look into the Baldr games. Busin 0 looks cool as well, I happen to be a huge sucker for dungeon crawlers. I think I'll wait till I find Tale of the Forsaken Land first before shelling out for that one though, to get an idea of how important dialogue is for the puzzles.

Any reason to get Virtual On if I already have the games for the Saturn and Dreamcast? I guess it has dual analog sticks.
