Avoid Starblazers at all costs. Yep, there are good fansubs of the first two series. I believe we actually talked about them just a few pages back.

I agree with Drauch - the only reason I was rockin Starblazers for the 3rd season was because it is the only watchable form of it - the subs available are pretty much HK quality, and for some reason no groups have said they're going to fansub season 3 either, which is a shame.

From what I saw Starblazers dubs/voices in season 3, they are pretty wooden, and I just can't handle Dessler as a posh englisher, then again, I did get a bit of warm nostalgia from them as I'm sure I recognised a lot of those voices from things I saw on TV as a kid, like 'Battle Of The Planets'.
But no, they do not in anyway compare to the stoic epicness of the original seiyu.
Oh yeah and Dr. Sado's drinking is censored too, it just looks ridiculous, 'I think I'll have some more cough medicine' - (pours from a blatant sake bottle).

... I've seen mention of a subbed version of the third Yamato series.

Anyway, found some eps (both Star Blazers and Yamato), will watch eventually.

It's kinda sad really that I've never seen this, despite it being such a cornerstone for anime, and despite that I have seen Robotech (which is one of my favorite animated programs of all time, to the point where I even collected the Jack McKinney novels). That being said, I might not get around to it soon... lately I've been burned out on uber-serious stuff and have grown attached to cuteness, thus my current Cardcaptor Sakura fixation.

I'm sure I could not do much better than Cardcaptor for cuteness. We have a bunch of Clow Cards who are all mischevious spirits and all take on some feminine form (really, I could cuddle the water card), we have a bunch of ten year olds who all either have awkward romantic attractions to older men or else are outright homosexual, we have mothers who were in love with their cousins and are now in love with their cousins daughters...

... I know it sounds like I'm describing Kodomo no Jikan here, but KnJ was disturbing, Sakura is cute. And I have yet to see any loli fanservice of any kind.

there are subs of Yamato III but they're actually unwatchable, and trust me, this is coming from someone who managed to sit through 7 episodes of Mazinger Z HK subs ;) ...

yeah Yamato is I suppose pretty 'serious' but you always got the pervy robot Analyzer for some light relief :D

Sakura rulz so fucking hard, you don't have to be ashame Edmond. I'm a huge fan of it, I still regret not buying the local special edition of the manga with the cards on it.

I'm planing to watch The Wings of Rean and Honey and Clover, but I would like to hear some opinions about them first.

Lol. You just reminded me of this tall, fat, bearded otaku (who called himself Bao - after that KoF kid) who wouldn't shut up about Sakura being the most powerful anime character ever and how she could easily beat Goku in a fight. He was obsessed with that show.

It was my first time going to an otaku gathering and this guy did NOT give me a good impression of the whole group.

Yeah, Starblazers is heavily edited stuff. Much like anything that was brought over to the states for a "simple" audience: Sailor Moon, Gatchaman, Voltron (Dairugger/Golion), Speed Racer, etc.

on episode four of Yamato 2199 - I very much like it - it's great how they've preserved lots of the analogue bleeps and bloops in the soundtrack :)

Wow, that's just.... all Goku would have to do is make sure she doesn't invoke a card.

I never thought of Sakura as being that powerful. Cool, but not powerful.

Personally I only discovered Sakura recently. I was at a Gamexchange and they had a bunch of classic anime. I picked up several DVDs, the first two volumes of Sakura among them. And I was instantly hooked.

The other DVDs I picked up, by the way, were: They Were Eleven, Detonator Orgun, Tokyo Revelation, Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer (OVA version), Dominion Tank Police, Fake, and Roujin Z.... and every last one of them wound up being either great or good, with Detonator Orgun being the most disappointing (it was basically like Tekkaman Blade, but without the ridiculous angst... so it was much better).

I remember the beginning of his argument being "Well Goku is an aloof idiot and he wouldn't realize he's in a fight. So Sakura has the first move and invokes a card". Sadly I can't remember the rest of it.

How's the 6th & final episode of Unicorn Gundam OVA series? I've read that the Blu-Ray version of it is supposed to go on sale on amazon.com tomorrow.

Episode 6 was one of the best in the whole series IMO. It's not the last episode, the ep 7 will be released next year.

Came across a site to read mangas online. I feel like reading some romance stuff (I'm a bit tired of action mangas and I'm now checking different waters). Any recommendations? Hopefully something with no nonsense.

Finished reading School Days - starts so innocent but the ending is a complete WTF. Now I feel like watching the anime.

Something by Asani Inio, Solanin and Oyasumi Pun Pun are great.
Mathematical Girl is good too, and if you want to read a nice Josei manga, I'll recommend you Udon no Hito/The Lady of Udon.

I listened to both, but I think I'll be sticking with Yamato as I saw no compelling reason to go with Star Blazers.

The only English dub I ever preferred over the Japanese original was Robotech, but that's largely because I see it as its own entity due to the larger amount of canon surrounding it (the Sentinels, for example). Star Blazers seems like it's just your average dub with some censorship and names changed, and in those cases I can only enjoy the dub if I have some nostalgia for it, which in this case I don't.

ok this is a very long shot, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of an animation that I vaguely remmeber from my childhood, for somre reason I remember it as being French, not sure if French-French or could be French commisioning Japanese, anyway it seemed to be a bit like Ulysses31, but it was a single animation film, which had really dramatic classical music all the way through it (definitely famous pieces as I think I recognised some of them even then (age 7-9 I think).

it seemed to be a story about the creation of a civilisation on a planet and then it getting destroyed by floods and stuff, for some reason I think it was a kindof sci-fi Venice or something.

If anyone can make anything out from that, I'm very impressed, as I'd love to see it again ;p

Are you out of your mind? Diebuster is terrible. There's no comparison between the two, night and day, chalk and cheese.

Gunbuster has great character designs, warmth, soul, subtlety in its parody, robust sci-fi themes, beautiful animation and engaging plot developments.

Diebuster has nothing. It's trash from the instant it starts. No depth, no soul, nothing inimitable or interesting: it's like sitting in a playground listening to kids scream nonsense at each other. It's a crystallisation of how anime has fallen: put the two side by side, and no lessons are required.

No idea which generation you guys come from, but whatever it is, sounds like you hit the evolutionary stage where good taste was jettisoned for bright colours and blahhhh.
