Brave Blade like mechanics
wondering if there are any other games with a similar medalling mechanic. specifically how the melee attack raises a medals value.
i know that raizing really makes medalling its own, but i am curious of any other examples of the given method of collection (besides Radigy, or whatever its called, coming on Naomi).
and i don't mean to be grating, i'm just surprised at such a gameplay concept.
ooh, i just love raizing!

I have no sig whatsoever.
Are you referring to using the charge attack on ground targets to yield larger bonus icons? That's the only similarity I can see, since I didn't think Cyvern had a melee attack. But in that sense, yeah, it's real similar.zinger wrote:Cyvern (AC)
Anyway, I am also quite fond of Brave Blade & the technique of increasing medal value through melee attack - awesome technique that should be explored more.
Oh yeah, and Cyvern rocks a lot as well.
That's right. They've ripped the Raizing medal chaining scoring system, only this one is limited to groundunits and buildings. Maybe I misunderstood the topic, it's a bit vague.FRO wrote:Are you referring to using the charge attack on ground targets to yield larger bonus icons? Scoring via the melee attacks is a tad different in the 2 Vasaras; in the first one, the more enemies you can kill with a single melee attack (or a supercharged one, when you've got enough gem thingies), the more points you get (I think each successive baddie you kill has its value multiplied, x2, x3, etc.). In Vasara 2, each enemy you kill with a melee adds on to an ongoing "x something" counter which appears on the side of the screen at times; I'm not sure exactly how it affects the score though.
Kyuiin on the PS1 might be worth a try if you like close attacks...aside from your regular shot, the game gives you 2 close attacks; sucking small enemies up in your vacuum tube, or hitting them with the wire on the back of your vacuum. Basically, if you want to score well, you need to nail as many enemies as possible with those attacks instead of your regular shot; I find it a bit frustrating though, so I wouldn't recommend forking out a load o' cash for the first copy you see for sale.
A few other games which use close-range attacks for score in some way or another (that I can think of offhand) are Dragon Blaze, XII Stag, Shiki 1 and 2 (for some chars, anyways), R-Type Final (sort of), and the new "Drill" demo for the DC. You might also want to dig up my topic from a little ways back on "Non-Shooting Shmups" if you didn't see that, it might point you someplace...

thanks bm. i just received the drill demo the other day, dragon blaze is certainly on my list (my test runs in mame were a blast), and i'll be giving the vasaras another go in the near future.
its funny. i hate the fire armor in lords of thunder, being that close makes me feel nervous. but i love wading through fire to whack around a few medals.
edit: icarus, your suggestion is well noted. that sounds great.

In Vasara 2, as I understand it, after you kill 3 enemies with the melee attack, you activate a counter equal to x*100pts, where x is the number of enemies you've killed up to then with said melee attack. THe counter stays on until you use the melee attack on thin air; blowing up scenery counts as something, though the counter's value stays put.BulletMagnet wrote:Scoring via the melee attacks is a tad different in the 2 Vasaras; in the first one, the more enemies you can kill with a single melee attack (or a supercharged one, when you've got enough gem thingies), the more points you get (I think each successive baddie you kill has its value multiplied, x2, x3, etc.). In Vasara, the number of enemies you kill with the melee attack is multiplied by 500 for a bonus. Or soemthing like that.
cybattler is amazing, one of my favs, beautiful 2D graphics and all-out-action gameplay, kikckass mecha art too..Icarus wrote:You should try Cybattler then. Mech vert with melee attacks. Great fun.
(i happen to have one for sale, check market)
i wouldnt say it plays much like braveblade tho.. more like a 2D zerogunner 2...
the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..
Yeah, of course. There aren't many games around that have the medalling system like Raizing games (with the exception of the Raiden Fighters and some others), but if you're looking for a good, fun mech vert, and want to whack stuff with a big laser sword, play Cybattler.sven666 wrote:i wouldnt say it plays much like braveblade tho.. more like a 2D zerogunner 2...
There are plenty of other games with melee attacks, stuff like Gunbird and Gunbird 2, Homura, Shikigami no Shiro 1 and 2, Vasara 1 and 2, AIRRADE (all three of them), Radiant Silvergun (play it with Sword only ^_-), Twinbee Yahhoo (use the Rapid Punch charge attack) and XIISTAG. Those are a few I can think of.
If you want something that plays like Brave Blade though, you're better off getting Brave Blade. Nothing that I know of plays like it.

Sorry to hear this one isn't as fun as it looks to be. The usual price has caused me to hesitate to get it in the past; given what you say here, I'm going to put it toward the bottom of my list.BulletMagnet wrote: Kyuiin on the PS1...
