Why do people like Batsugun so much more than Donpachi?
They seem very similar to me.
Re: Why do people like Batsugun so much more than Donpachi?
I actually like Dodonpachi more. Batsugun was produced by some of the same people from Toaplan that eventually formed CAVE when Toaplan dissolved.

It's more fun to me. More old fashioned play, less worrying about moving here and there to keep the chain going.
Re: Why do people like Batsugun so much more than Donpachi?
Neither are that great IMO >_>
Re: Why do people like Batsugun so much more than Donpachi?
I like Batsugun better because the player ship looks like this

But Donpachi's ship looks like this

The finer aspects of the game, you know.

DP is uglier and stricter.
Batsugun/Batsugun Special has a stronger initial hook with its simpler action, monstrous cock-slapping firepower and more colourful presentation. DonPachi looks and sounds tame by comparison, the chain timing is very strict and it's upstaged in the public eye by its sequel, which also has beefier guns and glossier audiovisuals as well as relatively forgiving chain timing.
If you're talking specifically about the Saturn standings of these games, Batsugun+Special's port is excellent barring some missing slowdown. DonPachi's isn't, adding slowdown, having poor audio quality, and being beaten out by the PS1 version which never bodes well for 2D Saturn games.
Anyway, they don't actually play much alike at all. DonPachi's burst chaining sets it well apart from Batsugun.

Batsugun has pigs though...

Batsugun has more of the old-school shmup feel that I personally enjoy more than the Pachi games.

Batsugun! It's lots of fun! It's number 1! That's it my review is done.
Also, having Hymn for Fighters play after you lose all your lives makes it pretty much impossible to rage quit the game. I love that song.

It takes about 3 stages before DonPachi finally picks up, whereas Batsugun, even with an easy first stage, keeps things adventurous and fun all the way (though the last stage marathon is pretty brutal).

Batsugun also has Joker Jun art, a better soundtrack (with individual boss themes), and a relatively unique powerup system. I honestly haven't played that much Donpachi strangely enough.

I love how fast Batsugun is, and everything in it is done to perfection. It's almost a perfect shmup.

Yeah I like Batsugun over DonPachi though I do consider them both good games. To be honest though, I haven't really compared them to eachother till now.
Re: Why do people like Batsugun so much more than Donpachi?
It does, they're just built in clumps (not full stage business). Scoring well in Donpachi is torturous.Bananamatic wrote:there are no chains in donpachiEd Oscuro wrote:It's more fun to me. More old fashioned play, less worrying about moving here and there to keep the chain going.
Batsugun for some reason feels less like a predecessor and more like a game that succeeded Donpachi. That might be because we reference Donpachi against the rest of the games in its series, but it definitely feels more sluggish and careful than the blazing excesses of Batsugun.
Let it be known however, that Donpachi is a fine game, terrific fun. Its not perfectly balanced and has odd pacing, but it's damn enjoyable anyway.
Also, the Hong Kong version is a tool for assisted suicide. No need to go to Sweden.

I'll give you credit for making me play Donpachi for the first time in a long while though, thanks

Because Toaplan's triumphant swan song is greater than Cave's humble beginning.

also, I don't think donpachi even has a car moving fast across a highway. seeing that always gives me the inspiration to go on a little bit further and shoot a little harder
Re: Why do people like Batsugun so much more than Donpachi?
Donpachi chains are sorta fun because they're fairly short. Small puzzles instead of stage long ones, etc.
Re: Why do people like Batsugun so much more than Donpachi?
Yup, and Batsugun takes an entire loop until it picks up. If you happen to be not playing Special, then it takes until the next game.EmperorIng wrote:It takes about 3 stages before DonPachi finally picks up...

Batsugun has the better music, better presentation, and it's just the all-around better game.

Re: Why do people like Batsugun so much more than Donpachi?
Donpachi is much deeper in scoring terms, all things considered. It's also hard to 2-ALL and has a really nicely paced difficulty. Plus the suicide bullets in it are great, they come out of everything and will kick your ass if you don't know how to deal with em.
What it really comes down to is the announcer. Batsugun doesn't even have one so it's beneath consideration.

I second that RGNmaster but for me Batsugun plays slightly better in terms of control and I find the graphics more appealing, heck even the soundtrack. On the other side DoDonPachi kicks Batsus ass clearly.DonPachi feels like a "beta" of DonPachi.Nevertheless a great schooter like all the goodies that come from Cave.Great company.
Its not all about scoring (for me),sometimes I want to have a "relaxed" experience.Even Cave admitted that they might have gone to far with their scoring systems. For example Akai is for me a real time strategy game, only difference my brain hurts because of the immense amount of information it has to process im millisenconds. That can be exhausting from time to time.Maybe Im getting old?I hope not:)
