Request for assistance (IRL, local) on JAMMA rewiring.

Post by Frankie_Says_Relax »

Hey gang,

New user here, though some of you might know me from Digital Press -- in fact several users there recommended that this community would be the best place to seek out this kind of assistance.

I'm one of those unfortunate souls that is relatively knowledgeable about cabinet functionality, but doesn't have wiring/soldering/engineering abilities to save his life.

I own an early 80's generic Japanese cocktail with a standard JAMMA setup and a 60-in-1 board. I came across a great deal/sale on a 276-in-1 vertical board, so I jumped on the opportunity to upgrade thinking it would be a simple board swap, but of COURSE the site that I bought it from was the only one that wasn't absolutely plastered with warnings that it required non-standard JAMMA wiring to function without failure/error.

So, this is a friendly call for help. If there's anybody local to me who can offer up their service, here's the breakdown of what I need:

Apparently, based on the MAME software that runs on this board, position #27 (common ground) on the harness needs to be completely clear of wiring/grounding or else most of the games won't boot or function properly. This is a problem since all of my existing common ground is hard-wired to 27.

Position 28 is apparently safe for ground, so I'll need all my common ground stuff moved from 27 to 28.

Also, it apparently uses the coin op positions on the harness as game-selection buttons. The 60-in-1 doesn't use that when it's set to free-play so I need two buttons wired to my coin-op.

This seems like a relatively simple task for somebody who is skilled with JAMMA. The guy who built this setup did a really clean/organized job, but opted to hard-wire instead of use quick-release tabs, so, for anybody who suggests that I tinker with it myself - I'm way outside of my element and I can almost guarantee that I'd screw up a really nice piece in my gaming setup.

I'm in Northern New Jersey and if this doesn't look daunting, I'd gladly pay for your time, effort, parts/labor, lunch, etc. if you'd like to help!

Arcade tech resources seem to be drying up with the veritable extinction of Arcades in this area and the Digital Press community doesn't have any members local to me that can make the call.

I know there are a few members at DP that frequent this community that can vouch for me being of the normal non-serial-killer variety. ;) (Greg2600 and Ed Oscuro sent me this way, not sure if they go by those monikers here.)

On to the tech --

This is the board in question: http://www.shop.cajunarcade.com/276-in- ... -00002.htm

This is the required Jamma configuration:

And this is my existing setup in the cab (just to give you an idea of the scope of what you'd be working with):

A bit tight, but everything looks clean/organized to me.

And, again, me + wiring =/= good idea, so thanks in advance for taking that into consideration before recommending that I do the work myself.

So, yeah, either drop me a PM here or hit me up over at http://www.digitpress.com if you have an account there!

Ed Oscuro suggested that a JAMMA adapter might be a simple solution. Something like this ...

I know that this is non-JAMMA to JAMMA, but I assume they make JAMMA to JAMMA for odd configurations like this.

Again, outside of my personal ability, but that might be something that somebody could even wire up and send to me (again, of course I'd pay for parts, labor, etc.) without a local work visit!

Thoughts?
