Storing Monitors?

Post by lettuce »

I have 2 brand new (in Boxes) 26" 15khz Arcade monitors that i have had stored in my garage since about September last year, they are on a pallet so are not in contact with the cold concert floor. What steps should i take before actually using them, i guess bringing them indoors for at least 6 hours before use to dissipate any moister that might have built up but anything else?.

Can storing monitors in the cold...and maybe damp environment (its a brick garage after all) cause monitors damage at all?. I have noticed that my PVM monitor states operating uses as low as -10c, its never got that cold in the garage this winter however, im just wondering what the tolerance to the cold your average monitor can take?

PS. probably stupid asking this question after they've been in storage for about 6 months.

temperature shouln't matter. dampness can hurt electronic in the long run. What's your hygrometer showing ?? You should be fine up to 65% and you if you box the monitors you can put in some bags with silica gel to keep the moisture out.

Dont have a hygrometer in the garage. But i guess if is a good foot of the ground, and still in the box and not against any walls there shouldnt be any damp, only if it was left on the floor up against a brick wall??
That said the radio has been left in the garage for 10+ years and that still works. The coldest weather should be behind the UK now, so it wont get any colder/damper....hopefully.

PS. Ive just stuck a electronic Hydrometer out in the garage on 26% atm, ill leave it a few days and see what it get up to. Would dampness have hurt if for the 3-4 months its been winter here do you think, or are we talking about constant dampness over years??

If you see rust then it was hurt by it, otherwise I don't think there is any grounds for worry.

26% on a hygrometer is nothing.

You should start to worry when the box itself feels to start a little damp. This happens after about 3-4 months in 80%.

Well its a bit hard to tell, the box defiantly feels cold and i cant see any visual damp patches on the corners of the box at all. I'll see what the hydrometer gets up to in the next few days

not talking about drops of water dripping from the edges, but dampness from the air getting into the cardboard boxes. You can feel this after a few months and the cardboard loses stability.

If storing long term I'd personally put the monitors themselves into plastic bags or industrial clingfilm with some big bags of silica gel, throw some more bags of silica into the boxes, and make sure the boxes are sealed up well enough to keep insects and vermin out.

The Hydrometer has been in the garage 24hrs now and have just looked at it, the highest value was 78% and is currently on 69%!!. That said it has been raining since about 8pm last night and hasnt really stopped if that has any bearing on the value
