Far Cry on my computer (I'm am surprised)
someone loaned me a copy of Far Cry and i installed it.
now i have:
P4 1.8 Ghz
Geforce 4 MX 64Mb
512 ram
20 Gb HD
and a sound card that apparently isn't supported by XP
so i am playing silence, and i don't get the bells and whistles like custom shaders (for light and texturing and so on) but its running pretty well, around 30fps.
i am completely surprised, particularly with the draw distance, and how well vegetation streaming is handled.
anyway, i'm surprised.

Not a huge fan of MX cards either. Geforce 4 MX series is basically a slightly faster Geforce 2. There are plenty of ways to tweak if you want to put off upgrading for a while, or you could just upgrade. Back when I ran my GF2 MX400, I had it running pretty decent. Way beyond factory spec, and a ton of graphics settings tweaked. At the time I was more concerned with FPS rather than quality (anyone who's played Quake competitively knows how important a constant 72 or so FPS is), but everything still looked pretty good. Feel free to shoot me a PM, captain. Might be able to squeeze a little more performance out of your card if you're interested.FatCobra wrote:Geforce MX cards are total crap, throw it out and get a real videocard.

While I thought the graphics were stunning in Far Cry there was a lot in it that game that just didn't gel with me. The last few levels and the Trigen really grated on me.
The A.I on the enemy marines was fantastic and there was plenty of scope on how to takle the levels, but it all just went terribly wrong 2/3rds of the way through.
I just upgraded to an ATI X800pro and it's lurvely!
Looking forward to F.E.A.R. & Serious Sam II next week.

I never had a problem with the trigens. They were all about attacking you head on so, with the proper tactics, they could be really easy to take down. Of course you couldn't use the same damn tactics (ie. pop up from cover, shoot, run to new cover, rinse, and repeat) that you used on the mercs which at times could be annoying
For example on the third level there was this jungle part of the level where a group of mercs would constantly surround me and chew me up. While I couldn't get a bead on them since the jungle was so dark and the foliage was so thick, their AI let them see exactly where I was at all times. Pretty damn cheap. I redid this level at least 10 times. No level with the trigens was as bad as this.
Basically if you don't want to change your tactics to suit the enemy, blame yourself not the game. If you want a game that is all about anal cover utilization go play Full Spectrum warrior or the Brothers in Arms series. Far Cry isn't your game and neither is the Halo series, once the Flood appear. Both the flood and the trigen require Rambo-like tactics which is what I specialize in so I am just going to laugh at newbs who can't hang with a new enemy. If I managed to survive those cheapass mercs, you guys can survive the trigens...or you can go cry to mommy after deleting the game off your hard drive.

It wasn't as though the Trigens were particularly hard to kill. However like the Flood in Halo they were an incredibly dull element to an otherwise good game. There was just no way in Hell that the Trigen could match up to the fun of getting into a serious firefight with a group of marines. At least with the marines you had to duck for cover, flush them out with grenades etc. With the Trigen it was just circle strafe around them and shoot.
For me that just got very stale, very quickly.
I don't mind it in games like the Serious Sam series or the Painkiller series because that's what you get from the get go. A nice twitch FPS. But Far Cry treated you to some exceptionally good A.I. and then it all went to shit.

I guess we see it from two different ways then. I loved getting the shotgun+plasma sword and going to town on the flood. It wasn't dull, it was obviously a challenge since some people clearly can't hang. For me, Far Cry quickly could have gotten very stale with the same old, flush out, take cover, and repeat tactics. The Trigen gave me a nice adrenaline rush and it wasn't like they took over the whole game. It was still obvious that the mercs were the stars of the show. Point is I really liked the variety.Ord wrote:The n00b wrote:I never had a problem with the trigens.
