Otomedius Touch screen controller...anyone use/own one?

Post by Crazy Climber »

Hey Guys!
Since everyone was so helpful with my DoDonpachi inquiry I had one more thing that has me a little stumped....

The Otomedius touchscreen controller!

Okay, I know Otomedius was kind of a flop and all, but that touchscreen controller looks seriously bad-ass!! I think the game is okay, and might even be willing to put down the $$$ on one of these some day since I am a collector at heart before a gamer but there seems to be a serious lack of information from anyone that has actually used one or even owns it? I can't find any reviews or even a video showing somebody using it.

I'll NEVER see an actual arcade machine so was just wondering if anybody has used it, what does it do, does it add some depth to the gameplay/etc or is it just a gimmick?

Would be nice to play the game how it was intended, I know playing centipede with a D-pad sucks balls so is that the case with the Otomedius touch screen stick? Would just hate to blow the $300+ on one and have it be nothing else than a shelf ornament, lol.

Anybody own one or play one? What did you think about it?

Thanks guys!
- Brian

I'm one of the few people who happen to like the Otomedius games. G was actually what pushed me to get a Japanese 360 over an American unit. The special joystick being icing on the cake (being a Yoshizaki Mine fan, I HAD to). Because I'm a cheap bastard, it's pretty much my main joystick for my 360, since it's all I have (although I'd love to get the MushiFutari stick at some point...GREEN!) I know it's probably considered blasphemous here since the stick and buttons aren't the prefered style, but I like it just fine.

Works great in Gorgeous, but do keep in mind, this is the only game this will work as intended. Excellent while it features a similar cursor, they didn't even bother to make it compatible. It "works", but unlike Gorgeous where you use it like any touch panel, you have to keep your finger near the corners for the top and bottom working the x-axis and the sides for the y-axis. The other game that sort of had interesting workings for the touch pad was Mamoru-kun. You can use the pad as a 2nd "stick" and while not as good as an actual stick, I controlled it pretty good.

I'd say more and provide pics and such, but I'm at work atm. Just wanted to acknowledge your question, as that controller has a special place in my shmup heart. ;)

Thats awesome! Yeah, I have only played Excellent. Gorgeous sells rather inexpensive though so I wouldn't mind picking it up, I didn't even know they were different games honestly. If you do get a free chance to post a few pics that would be awesome....if you really get some free time and could do a small video showing it in action that would be REALLY awesome!! Like I said, I can't find anything online about it, which I found strange....

Otomedius Excellent is shite, in my humble opinion; G is much better (but still not great).

I also own the Otomedius G LE stick. It's my main 360 joystick for shmups.

That's because the touch-pad on the joystick is nothing more than a flattened out left analog stick. I would have loved if UD HD had the option to assign movement to the digital controller and then allow either analog stick to be used for rotation/firing as that would have been really ideal.

If it was a flop we wouldn't have had two of them Brian!

In actuality, it made adolescent boys do the opposite of flop, and therefore garnered some success.

If you're thinking of buying them, don't. They're both shit, one more than the other, and there is a wealth of other stuff to spend your money on. Protip: hit up google, have a wank, you'll forget all about it and end up on ebay buying Ketsui.

This is interesting, so basically it's a touch screen anolog stick, cool! So I take it this touch screen is compatible with other games (based on you and blu ray using it as your main stick) So it has good response time/etc if you guys are playing other shmups also (my main fear would be a ton of lag/choppy movement/etc..) I'm a lot more tempted to track one down now knowing it's a touch screen anolog and not just a gimmicky weapon selector or something.

lol, yeah, I really thought they were the same game and they just called it G in Japan for whatever reason. I owned Excellent when it first came out but sold it while it was still going for something since I didn't "love" it. I only gave it a few hours a play but I just thought it was okay and not something I wanted to devote a lot of precious practice time to (Deathsmiles was the shmup I played right before it so I had high expectations, lol)
BTW - Yeah baby, Ketsui looks totally BAD ASS and is definetily on my "purchase soon" list. Everything I hear/read says it's a must own!

The touch-pad is a left analog stick... granted, I don't use that for any other game. For me, it's just a well built 4-button joystick with a responsive ball-top stick. That's why I use it... I don't really mess with the touch-pad at all. At the time when I bought the LE set, I didn't have a good quality joystick for my 360, so it was filling a direct need. I wouldn't go buying it exclusively for the touch-pad if I were you. I guess if you're a collector of Yoshizaki Mine paraphenalia then at least there's that.
