Recommended Anime/Manga?
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Yup, Leda is one of my favorites. As is Windaria and Time Stranger, two other films by the same director, although Time Stranger is missing the Inomata designs. If I recall correctly, it was confirmed that Leda did influence the character design for the Valis series, which makes me all giddy. A Leda Yohko figure just got released this past year by Griffon, oddly enough, although the mold didn't really fancy me much. I'd kill for a nice Valis or Leda figure!

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Well that makes sense then, as the similarities between Valis & Leda are striking. Even the main villain from Leda, bears a very close resemblance to the Final Bosses from Valis and the whole alternate dimension / other-world scenery / scenario, is basically identical.drauch wrote:Yup, Leda is one of my favorites. As for Windaria, I'm pretty sure it influenced a whole line of SNES RPGs (Secret of Mana, Secret of Gaia, Terranigma, etc...), as the whole "Tree of Life / Gaia" concept is repeated in pretty every single one of them and the characters (Especially in Terranigma) look almost identical. And let's not forget the main character from Legend of Oasis series on the MD, he looks practically identical.

By the way another awesome anime is Dallos which is said to be the 1st OAV ever.

Its creator is the same guy that made Area 88, another epic anime

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Yeah, I'd be shocked to find that Windaria didn't influence a lot of the SNES RPGs like you said. I've never really thought about that before, but you'd think Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky would lead the influence since it came out the same year and is vastly much more popular, but it's hard to say, especially with the character design. Windaria is certainly deserving of such praise. Odd, but there was also a DS game in 2008 that I wasn't aware of: http://youtu.be/98i_Xi1nGNU
Minitokyo is a fantastic site for high-res anime material. I've had quite a few things printed off of there with amazing results. Still really need to get some Windaria and Leda art, although I really can't say I need any more posters at this point. Ahhhh, hoarding.
Also agree on Dallos and Area 88 being fantastic OVAs. I feel like Dallos kind of suffers in the last bit, but it's still quite an impressive work that I'd like to see get released on R1 DVD/BD at some point.
A tokusatsu thread might be nice at some point during the future. I'm pretty weak with my knowledge of shows--which I'm trying to change--but I think Godzilla, Gamera and other series/films could get quite a conversation stirring as we've done here. SHUWATCH!

Once I finish watching the original Macross, I will be falling all over myself to watch Do You Remember Love. The animated scenes from the game had my jaw on the floor. So intricate.

and yes DYRL is brilliant - remember that it is supposed to actually be a film which people in the SDF universe watch about what happened before ;p
it is very good and epic, however I don't think it's a replacement for the original series, more of an addition, as it lacks a little bit of the funny/weird feel that SDF Macross has - like this o_O -

I suppose it's just like the relationship between the Mobile Suit Gundam (0079) films and the TV series

From what I saw of the game's scenes, I agree; DYRL looks way more serious. Not always a bad thing, but I always watch the original first when I can. Same with visual novels that were adapted to anime, I always go for the VN first, like with Steins;Gate and Umineko(which had a horrible anime).Raytrace wrote:have you seen the footage from the pachinko game?cj iwakura wrote:Once I finish watching the original Macross, I will be falling all over myself to watch Do You Remember Love. yeah the amount of detail per frame in DYRL is mindblowing though. Yeah I always try to watch originals ot TV first, one exceptions is Galaxy Express 999 - I will watch the series eventually though :p.cj iwakura wrote: From what I saw of the game's scenes, I agree; DYRL looks way more serious. I'm watching Macross 7 atm, I'm not going to pretend I'm not enjoying it, but well it's nothing compared to the original series IMO.
Macross Zero I quite liked though I wish it the CG was less blurrily textured. Animation of fights was brilliant though.
Oh and while we're on the subject of 'Super Dimensions' - have you seen Orguss? - it is very very good and enjoyable, Orguss 02 is also brilliant, but in a very different way.

This looks fantastic!

Is this actually an anime remake of the original Macross series / film that I can watch?
Indeed DYRL film had incredible animation, superior to the Macross / Robotech series and features a superb epic / sad / dramatic story-line.
The final battle can only be compared to the epic space fleet battles in Gall Force trilogy.
You'll love it!

I concur! The latest 2004 remake lost some of its dramatic / sad feel, but it was a great anime none the less, especially its awesome techno / trance sound track!Raytrace wrote:a perfect game, anime and mangaST Dragon wrote:

Only thing that remains for me is to complete the game.
Which should I go for, the Arcade or the SNES English version?

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Gall Force Trilogy is another awesome anime series with a dramatic / sad story-line, depicting the origins of the human race.
It also features some of the most epic & iconic large-scale spaceship fleet battles and best mechanical ship & mech designs I've ever seen along with Macross DYRL. (If anybody has something equivalent or grander to suggest please do so)
Gall Force 1 - Eternal Story
Gall Force 2 - Destruction
Gall Force 3 - Stardust War
I'm surprised no company has ever made a decent shmup (Like Banpresto's Macross SDF arcade (1992)) out of this, as its content is incredible! That MSX version is arguably nothing special.
The other Gall Force films were just not as epic.

Starblazer, yes I remember watching that show on TV way back in 1991 as a kid. It had a sad and ominous feel. I vaguely remember an episode where one of the protagonists had artificial mechanical legs and arms and was trapped & strapped against a wall and one of his comrades detached his artificial limbs, freed him and carried him away. He then detonated a bomb destroying the enemy battle-ship by pulling a string with his mouth from one of his artificial arms.
The art of that show bears a striking resemblance to the 1st 1978 Captain Harlock series. I wonder if it's made by the same artists / animators?

And so is the prequel intro FMV sequence of Macross DYRL on the PS1 & Saturn. You actually get to see how the air-craft carrier Prometheus was cut in half, which was much later discovered by Hikaru & Misa by the sea-side when they de-folded on a barren & scorched earth.
I 1st thought that it was a removed scene from the original DYRL anime.

That's actually a SEGA Game Gear on the upper left corner with all those green & orange carts scattered around it, not a NEO-GEO Pocket, as it hadn't been released when Devil Hunter Yohko aired on TV back in 1990. That's a nice case too by the way.
How ever, I still think the white Game Gear in the anime was just the artist's interpretation, as I doubt they were aware of this rare white Game Gear back then without Internet.
