Sengeki Striker: Spiritual Successor to Shienryu?

Post by undamned »

Just got this Super Nova cart, over the weekend, and played a bit of it, last night. Released in the same year as DDP (1997), it shares both similar bullet patterns and a single pixel hit-box. One of the boss's bullet patterns was very reminiscent of Lady Gara's statue attack, which is impressive being as this game predates ESP Ra.De.
Pretty fun game, actually :D I must say that the Vulcan options are the most aggressive options I've seen in a shmup.

So, in the title screen I noticed that this is a work of Warashi, the same folks that brought us Shienryu. The flavour of the graphics show the relation, too.
So, my overall assessment is: you mix Shienryu and DDP, add options, and you get Sengeki Striker :D

Sengeki Striker

I have the cart also, and I like it. Not many other people do though, which surprises me a bit.

Sometimes you come off Stage 1 with a very high score, which has been the subject of some debate in the past. I think its down to how you kill the various parts of the Midboss.
Getting to Stage 5 on 1 credit is kinda hard :?

Ps. Rando's right!

This sounds intriguing. I have always been a big fan of Shienryu (not so hot on Daioh, though) and this is not the first time I hear Sengeki Striker mentioned as Shienryu's spiritual successor. I'd love to play it one day, but in MAME on my Computer I only get it to run very jerkily. I don't know if the emulation or my computer is to blame. Probably the latter.

i've only tried it in MAME but i really like it. it certainly reminds me of shienryu, but the gameplay is more satisfying to me. i just really suck with the raiden.

i love the options, lasers suit my "death in a straight line" mentality and the vulcan shots are beasts as well.

be interested to hear more about the scoring system, over the years on these boards, it seems like the general consensus is that they are still more or less a mystery.
I have no sig whatsoever.

ill6 - That's it then. I've convinced myself. I'll have it installed in Casino Arcade on Friday, together with Cyvern.

I like it,
pro's:
tons of bullets, cool spaceships, a few great set pieces, awesome blue robot on top of giant plane.
Great pace- gets real manic.

cons:
a few boring backgrounds.
the gameplay feels a little loose- press the button real fast, release for an option blast, hope they kill the bad guy before you, all while dodging and kind of planning your next move. Definitely a lot looser than just shooting bad guys- and compounded trying to make the planes land on the tanks. Some times the bullet paterns on the bosses get a little numbing (like on the tank), maybe in a good way?
Also, it bugs me to hear your machine guns during the score screen.

My verdict is that the game is really great, but definitely unique, whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. I could imagine that if it was your only game, you'd really get into it rather than get sick of it for all it's quirks.

I really enjoy a lot of other wierdo shmups (gameplay wise).
You know, I love to see modern takes on the traditional, more straightforward, gameplay.

*edit*
I think it would make all the difference in the world if they would have used another button to fire the options, so you could charge them and then use them right when you want.

Weird, I had always thought Kaneko was the developer until this thread.

It certainly has graphical similarities to Shienryu, but the questions remains: can it compete with the cock rock sountrack of the original? Shienryu's music always reminds me of some campy 80s rock.

I anybody's interested in buying this off of me, let me know :D It was just one of those games I'd been interested in, for a long time, got to try it, found it wasn't better than DDP, and am willing to sell.
