I thought your post was somewhat reasonable up until this. I think the answer is pretty obvious: It's not luck, it's called "not every human being is a perfect machine who can keep his/her brain at a perfect level of 100% concentration and focus at all times". People make mistakes. It happens, and I'm glad it does, because these games would get boring after you cleared them if muscle memory and memorization was all you needed.DrTrouserPlank wrote:One has to ask that if the games' are so much about skill (and that the dreaded luck that I talk about is so inconsequential) then what accounts for that 30%?#.

Go play version 1.01 of this game.
THEN Complain that this one is hard.
Only one person in the entire world is known to clear 1.01's Ultra... You're looking at the famous replay here.

Don't forget Daioujou Death Label! I believe only one person has beaten that game.trap15 wrote:I can agree that there are games/modes that were not actually designed to be reasonable or sane. i.e., Futari Ultra.
Re: Mushihimesama Futari Ultra Mode - you f**kin serious?
I GARBAGE at these games, and I can tackle this mode with pleasing results. It just takes some practice. I never really found this game to really pull any truly dirty tricks until very very late game.

Doubt I'll play it much though. Got pretty much zero interest in it.

Ultra is sweet if you have the time to put into it.

No. I've got to buy it.
As I've said before, whist I do like these games conceptually, I think I actually prefer collecting them more than I enjoy playing them. There's something quite nice about having a collection of games on your shelf that have traveled thousands of miles to be there. It's quite exotic.
Of course, that only really applies if I have to buy the JPN release. If this game gets a domestic release (which is looking increasingly unlikely) then the appeal is lessened.

1cc's may be elusive for a time but in my experience, once you get one, you should be able to 1cc nearly every time except if you are distracted, tired, or playing too risky. Remember, we aren't talking about worrying about scoring, just survival. That video shown above is of a pro and he is not sweating the 1cc, I can assure you that.DrTrouserPlank wrote:The best estimates I've seen here are that "people" can clear something 70% of the time; and we are talking about the "easiest" mode. Here's the best part. Instead of deifying other players as if they have some fundamental ability that you can never have (which may be true of the 2 percentile of so), the fact is that you do not have to be as good (obsessive) as you think just to clear these games. If you stick with it you will see that one day I promise. Everyone started out thinking these games were ridiculous and impossible.
Re: Mushihimesama Futari Ultra Mode - you f**kin serious?
Reviving an *old* thread here because starting a new one seemed unnecessary...
I've been playing SDOJ, having just got it as a Platinum release and I figured I'd go back to Futari. Bought it a few years ago and never loved it like everyone else seems to. After completing one credit-feeding playthrough...eh, it's still OK.
Instead of turning it off, why not try Arrange Mode? Let's go Novice because I suck. Arrange / Novice / Ultra.
That was one of the most fun games I've played in a long time. With autobomb, even I could 1cc it and face Larsa's second form. Before you scoff at my shmup shittiness...I'm aware how easy it was. Just saying it was friggin' fun!!!
The purple and pink bullet festival was a blast dodging and stages 4 and 5 were just wonderful (rather than frustrating). Maybe getting older and not caring so much has its benefits.

Re: Mushihimesama Futari Ultra Mode - you f**kin serious?
The problem is that there's no point in the process where one really allows themselves to care. Either you care so little that you simply don't care enough, or you care too much about the wrong things in some very wrong ways.
If people truly wish to no longer respect the reality of shmups, maybe they should just properly throw the genre away and stop acting like they care. This never ends at shmups the genre, of course, but this is Shmups Forum.
...Wow, how did I miss dtp.txt? Greatest resource ever created for the "shmups community". Should be moved to Strategy.
