Nice! Took me forever to find one of those for a reasonable price (though mine's so knackered, I'm surprised it runs)!

Its the US version of Star Force, and is surprisingly fun (and hard)! Basically a caravan style shooter without the time attack.

Awesome! It's a super fun game, and playing for score is an excellent challenge.

Thanks to Showichi Yano
er I mean thanks to a joint effort, a real three-way actually, I now have taken custodianship of a Gun Hohohoki board. With matching serials on the board and the first instruction sheet! Plus a second instruction sheet and the manual.

A quick test revealed very loud sound (I wonder if the green caps are new? I'll have to take pictures of my PCBs sometime this year) and dark output (with the XRGB-2's 220 ohm caps on RGB lines turned off, and the supergun's individual brightness pots checked at full brightness). I thought I reset the XRGB 2 a while ago but perhaps this is still easily solved (and maybe I didn't really reset it after all). I also have a 2+ to play with now, too. Irem boards make me wish I had a DISPL though.

Still have Seibu on the brain for some reason...and HOGs... :?

This one is from a trashed pcb lot, but just got it to work after building a replacement C board withh one 27c400 and changing 4 RAMs )Work Ram, VRAM and Sprite RAM). Bionic Commando:

Green caps are standard, so is the loudness (turn the pot down - Irem boards are often a case of most of the usable adjustment being in under 5 degrees of pot rotation), and the muted picture. I have to turn the brightness and contrast up on R-Type Leo for example on my cab compared to other games.

Well, this has been fairly interesting.

Japanese Gun Hohki - green capacitors. Top board M92-A-B; back board M92-B-B.
Korean Mystic Riders - black capacitors. Top board M92-A-B, but not labeled Made in Japan; back board M92-C-N.
U.S. In the Hunt - brown capacitors. Top board M92-A-B, back board is a small variant M92-E-C (I think).

Some difference in caps as well. The cap closest to the connector edge on the Japanese Gun Hohki is large, but the Korean variant has a smaller one, and another a little ways away - its configuration of caps is different than these Japanese and US boards.

Found the sound pot, I'll fiddle with that soon.

Also, System16 is terrible.

I don't think it's worth worrying about the cap colours ;) The big ones are only filtering anyway. Here's another In The Hunt board:

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d40/r ... CN2335.jpg

Korean ones it wouldn't surprise me if a different make was used, but most M92s I've seen have had the green ones unless someone replaced them. A lot of PCBs coming from Japan have the volume turned up quite high on the PCB because of amplified cabinets which are set too low. Actually I see that outside of Japan too from people with amped or volume controlled cabs. I've learned to turn the pot to minimum before I test anything.

As long as they aren't dying or exploding I'm not worried. I didn't think this would be a great surprise, but it is a bit frustrating that this information isn't out there in an easy to access format...at least not that I'm aware of. I'm sure there are lots of variations and cap colors don't necessarily denote anything special; I'm sure some manufacturers changed suppliers in mid-run sometimes.

I often wonder if any noise reductions could be achieved by replacing filtering caps with solid polymers with equivalent ESR...but I don't care to tempt fate!

Just turn the volume control down.

I went on a little drive today and picked up a few things...

1) Osman

Image

Of course when faced with an ex operator who clearly has other PCBs, it would have been rude not to ask...

2) Tatsujin

Image

3) Thunder Dragon

Image

4) USAAF Mustang

Image

There's a dead Twin Cobra and a very filthy (covered in plaster!) Midnight Resistance added to the repair pile too. Then on the way home I stopped off at the parcel depot to pick up some packages from Rancor...

5) Athena (sadly has sprite glitches, can't do much about it now)

Image

6) Kono E Taco with original art - hard to say no at 1000 yen. Oh - beware, this game is interlace.

Image

7) Air Duel ROM kit and original art

Image

8 ) Daisenpu and original art

Image

9) Dragon Saber and original instruction cards

Image

10) And a big pile of random stuff, actually this is with a bunch of other bits thrown in a box, like Sanwa catalogues and weird flyers I can't read with anime chicks on them. We've got a Phelios poster, part of a Namco calendar set I assume as there's the days for one month of the year on it, some Dragon Breed instruction cards (actually 2 sets), a Tenchi Wo Kurau instruction card, many awesome orange PCB feet, some Taito things, a towel of some kind, 2 Hardware Girls magazines (cute girls posting with geeky tech), and a stack of weird chocolate.

Image

It was a good day.

Whoa. Jealous as usual! Are you able to do a full picture of that Phelios poster? Not sure I'm familiar with that particular one.

Wasn't cheap, price determined by ebay - £255. Some of the others were peanuts though.

To answer the other question, yes it's low res interlace only, one of my screens hates that.

For Cannon Dancer that's still peanuts though.

Maybe everyone has overvalued it, ebay bidding reached 255...

Indeed, plenty of those boxless kits showing up - I grabbed one as well.

Could be, although last one on Yahoo went up to 70,000. It's a strange discrepancy, perhaps people are scared of conversions now.

Well PCB prices in Japan have been high for years, it's only availability that makes it worthwhile.

I would have never guessed a Daisenpu board would be that small. All my late 80s titles are huge, haha.

Seriously. Looking at that picture, I'm honestly not sure what I would have more fun playing with.

She's sitting in front of at least 20K worth of gear, likely a lot more than that; can't really see most of what's in the rack.

I need to look into this magazine more.

Those last few on ebay from a Korean seller have been bootleg conversions :? . The eproms give it away.
