What Is The Fastest Shump You Have Ever Played?

Post by Fervent Fovea »

What Is the Fastest Shump You Have Ever Played?

Greetings, fellow 2-d shooter enthusiasts. What is the highest velocity shump you have ever played? Surprisingly for me, it was Castle Shikigami 3 on the Wii. I never expected a shump on the Wii to be so wickedly quick, that it caused me to cry wee, wee, wee, all the way home.

I've never seen such astoundingly fast bullet hell before. If you set the difficulty to Extreme Mode level 3 and unlock the Extra Options on the Wii version of game, you can boldly dare to boost the games main speed to 200%, and you can even, if you have the audacity, pile drive the accelerator further and boost the bullet speed to 300%. It is utter, hyper-velocity insanity.

When Castle Shikigami 3 for the Wii is configured in this maniacal way, it is definitely the fastest game I have ever played. I never expected it to be, especially on the Wii, but I am overjoyed that there are visionary developers and publishers out there that dare to remove some of the the speed limit signs on shumps, so its more of an exhilarating and blood boiling adrenaline rush.

Any given Psikyo game is pretty much notorious for hellishly fast bullet speeds, particularly in their second loops.

MushiFutari Original mode gets frigging hilarious when the counter is boosted up past 70,000.

Dangun Feveron, extra points for the fact you yourself move pretty fast at speed 4 (I think the cats faster still although I never use it).

Any Psikyo second loop and the Raiden Fighters series.

Shikigami 3 is actually a really slow shmup compared to those.

In terms of bullet speed Toaplan may have the fastest games as some of them keep increasing as the game is looped. Del said this about Fire Shark ages ago:

DEL wrote:LGB wrote;

As for there being a cap on difficulty through the loops on Toaplan shooters, it does vary. Some end at the end of the 2nd loop like Hellfire and V-5, but the Japanese Fire Shark board seems to increase bullet speed with every loop ad infinitum  . My friend ARC conducted an experiment with Fire Shark - he put it on invincible mode and let the game play overnight while he slept. When he came back to it in the morning, the bullets were teeming down the screen like you wouldn't believe  . At least that's what he told me.

Hm, Aurorablast by neo Transilvania is the first game that comes to mind, but I don't know if it's truly the fastest one I've played -- this isn't something I've thought about before.

Gallop, Shippu Mahou Daisakusen, Battle Formula and Cloudphobia are all pretty fast if you play them right.

Power Strike II on Sega Master system.
I've long wondered if the speed is excentuated because I'm not playing it on a PAL console/tv.

The enemies bullets on the 2nd loop of the USA region Data East's Vapor Trail PCB move faster than the player's own fightercraft indeed.

And not too mention with American Sammy's Daioh PCB version (with the 6-button scheme from the get-go), the bullets get crazy fast on the 2nd loop as well.

I have a NES Twinbee game, called Stinger in the localization, that gets pretty hilarious once you grab a bunch of speed ups. Crossing the whole horizontally-oriented screen in a half second or so is crazy.

Gunbird, and as noted Psikyo games in general, get really fast. I can clear the first loop of Gunbird on one credit but the second loop is a nightmare. I think I got half way through the second stage but I was playing a port and I would need save states to get anywhere with the sheer speed of the attacks. Good game.

Gotta mention Qute. That Stage 4 Boss last pattern on Eschatos. You know which one I'm talking about. Plus the TLB.

Also, let some popcorn enemies escape on Ginga Force Hard mode and they'll fire crazy fast bullets as a parting gift.

Also will have to agree on Raiden Fighters.

It probably is. I remember reading somewhere that the code of the game is supposed to be optimized for PAL speed/50Hz.

From the overall feel, not the actual speed of objects on screen, the fastest shmup I've played is definitely Dangun Feveron's caravan mode.

Qute has a ton of really amazing, really fast patterns. I'm completely in love with their bullets; I've never played any other shooters that encompass such a range of manic and bullet hell design.

Yeah it's PAL only so if you're playing it at 60 Hz it'll be faster. It's easy to see the difference if you fire it up in something like Fusion and toggle the frequency.

Also recommending Psikyo shooters (Dragon Blaze particularly), the Raiden Fighters games and Dangun Feveron.

Game Tengoku's Time Attack mode is pretty damn fast too.

I would say the Raiden Fighters games are some of the fastest FEELING that I've ever played. The actual gamespeed definitely isn't the fastest of all time but everything looks, sounds, and just feels so frantic in those games that you're constantly pumped. The soundtrack really goes a long way.
