I prefer this one to Roger Rabbit, which is still a very good movie and I'd give it 4*, for me it doesn't have the same re-watch factor. Bob Hoskins was brilliant in it though and I liked Benny the taxi a lot.Moniker wrote:Yeah, I'm one of those naysayers. Re: Movies you've just watched
We watched this for movie night tonight. 50 minutes in, I just said I'm done and stopped watching. That is a terrible, terrible movie. Maybe I could enjoy watching it if I was drunk, but sober? Not even finishable.Skykid wrote:Guys, Red Sonja is shit!![]()
It's so badly directed, so badly written, painfully miscast and terribly acted, it's quite abominable. CT Destroyer was a little campy, but Fleischer did a reasonable job of it: Sonja is like he couldn't be bothered to expend an ounce of effort.
Even the Morricone score... it's lazy. It loops really quickly and is kind of irritating.![]()
I'm not surprised Schwarzenegger said it's the worst film he ever made, he's right, and that's saying something taking into account Hercules in New York. They consigned the Robert E. Howard fantasies to an early grave with this one.
1 star on the CMoon scale.

Isn't it though? I was shocked, my fantasy binge had been so enjoyable up to that point as well. Sonja, amazingly, manages to feel as though it was made several years prior to Destroyer too. At times it feels like a late 70's B-Movie.trap15 wrote:That is a terrible, terrible movie.

Logan's Run (1976)
Kind of torn on this one. Definitely some corny dialogue by the entire supporting cast (save the old man, and ironically the computer), but also some cool 70's psychedelica we can probably blame for the low budget. Can't help but think the book was better where the dome city was best left to the imagination. I think this would have had some potential had it been made 10 years later and been given the Blade Runner treatment. It at least has the ingredients.

What a disappointment. "Gattaca" with a smarter premise but dumber execution.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Yeah, Gattaca left a bit to be desired, but wasn't entirely awful (from what little I remember of it). I like Ethan Hawke, and have nothing but respect for the man as he bedded and wed Uma.

Killing Them Softly - ***
Good cast and acting - one of those slower paced films where it's more about the dialogue and the way the story is told, rather than the story itself. Reminds me a little of Hard Eight in that respect. If you haven't seen Hard Eight by the way, put it on your list to look out for, I rate it 5*.

While Gattaca's concept wasn't all that ground breaking, it was done as a competent character study.
In Time's concept was way more interesting "What if money literally was measured in bits of your limited lifetime traded away?" but devolved into a terrible action-ish mess (the solution to society's economic woes is to rob banks!)

just watched it and enjoyed it even though the end is borderline, like they didn´t have the balls not to put that chase at the end.boagman wrote: I really enjoyed "Argo" on several levels. the supporting cast is terrific i agree.
Didn´t like killing them softly at all.
it was tarantinesque stuff and thought it was really boring, maybe have to watch it again idk.
edit:all superheroes must die. watched this had no idea what it was about and somehow liked it even if it´s a small budget and has tons of flaws and not great acting.
that one could had potential with bigger budget and a competent cast/director.

Just watched Rushmore after not having seen it in FOREVER. There's that argument that all of Wes's films are really the same film (and in that sense they are like Gradius games) so you typically end up with the one or two that really click with you. Rushmore isn't my favorite, but it is certainly quite good and certainly has every Wes Anderson feature that makes his other films quite good. Lots of liittle design quirks and characters who's lives are spinning out of control, but somehow it is a comedy. That's basically every film Wes has made.

Re: Movies you've just watched
@ Aguraki - All Superheroes Must Die really is a bit of a mess. Which is a shame, the writer/director/main character Jason Trost (J-tro!) is my pick for current indie darling (barring the absolutely amazing Brit Marling of course). This whole thing was written and made way too quickly, filmed in his backyard and town with his friends and neighbors. They lost the costume designer (his sister) to the reality teevee show, Project Runway, so all the costumes were slapped together. The over all plot was okay, but it is clearly a quick grab at trends. They did a good job at hiding the fact that Jason Trost wears an eyepatch in this.
This is all so much more disappointing after seeing their other movie, The FP. Which is so damn retarded that it actually crosses over into being rather good! Two rival gangs in a small town settle scores through Dance Dance Revolution. No, really. The dialog is the best part of this film, it's unbelievably absurd. And, the conviction by the actors in this really helps sell it. Lee Valmassy as L-Dubba-E is amazing! He also is in ASHMD as The Wall (not so good in that). The costumes are fantastic, done by J-tro's sister, that's why she went on the reality show.
This is really one of my favorite movies for some reason that I can't explain.
The two movie share cast members and locations, but it's really just because they are making their own movies at home. So, even if ASHMD was a little disappointing, I'm looking forward to what ever is next from these guys. And, Trost has a cameo in Seth Rogan's upcoming This is the End as J-tro! I'll watch the dumb celebrity concept movie just for that.
Edit: I liked In Time, sure it's vapid and full of pretty young actors, but I thought it had its heart in the right place.
Also, I recently saw the trailer for Upside Down, looks great!

And strangely you make my point. People are very opinionated about Wes Anderson's films even while arguing they are basically all the same film. It would make more sense if people either loved them all or hated them all, but this isn't the case. I'm certainly not immune to this since I really didn't care for Darjeeling Limited, but thought Life Aquatic one of his best. I actually think what you take away from his films is mostly subjective--how much you buy into that particular fantasy. If Moonrise Kingdom's New England setting with two kids escaping on a romantic adventure speaks to you, then it might be your favorite film. Me, I like claymation talking animals and marine science documentaries.boagman wrote:

Anyway, I'd say Wes Anderson's oeuvre is more of a "same palette, different paintings" kind of thing than an ACDC greatest hits album. I do love them all, although I also have favorites - Darjeeling & Bottle Rocket. I'd have to watch it again, but I'd probably put Moonrise together with the Royal Tenenbaums.. movies that didn't click the first time, but that I appreciate more with repeat viewings.

TLAWSZ is so Wilson-heavy that it takes away from a stellar performance by Willem Dafoe and Michael Gambon. Oddly, as much as I want to love Bill Murray in that movie, he's sort of a backseat driver in the movie. He pulls his weight, yes, but he's outshone by the supporting cast in almost every way (see Bradley Cooper's performance in "Silver Linings Playbook" for another example of this, though I don't love Cooper like I do Bill Murray).

Interesting the way you qualified with the "grows on you" thing regarding TRT and MK...TLAWSZ was *exactly* that for me. I only appreciated it after having seen it a few times. It grew on me, but it will never reach the rarified air that TFMF and Rushmore will.
Re: Movies you've just watched
So I felt like watching it again after mentioning it yesterday.
Hard Eight - *****
Just as enjoyable as it was the first time I watched it, it's a character driven drama focusing on four characters - mainly the relationship between Sydney and John, the former acting as a mentor and almost surrogate father while taking John to Reno to learn a little about the gambling world. The performances are fantastic, the settings are perfect, the dialogue is engaging, the soundtrack sets the mood perfectly. The pace is generally slow and considered, best enjoyed alone with a drink. I love this film, it was my first introduction to PT Anderson who has since become one of my favourite film makers. It's a crime that this one still hasn't appeared on Blu-Ray.

@boagman - If you're not keen on the Wilson bros, you'd probably best steer clear of Bottle Rocket, since they're the two main characters (it is on Netflix, though). I think they're great, personally, but I can sorta see how some might be turned off.

The thing that made me draw a comparison was the heavy use of long dialogue exchanges between two characters, and a small cast. Maybe I am quite bias b/c it takes place in the city I've spent the majority of my adult life in, but it took a foreigner w/ a small budget, guerilla style shooting, and a good soundtrack to properly depict how lonely this city can be. I've never been completely mute as I had 3-4 years of university study by the time I had first visited, but even with that, it can make anyone feel hopeless.
I don't know what type of research she did, but there's really only one scene in the movie I found inaccurate.
