very good
Portals new one Vexovoid is great. Was expecting to feel a little bit meh about it, wasnt the biggest fan of Swarth, perhaps that was Portal burnout after what was at that time about a decade worth of seeing them semi regularly and perhaps listening to them a little too much :P. But yeah Vexovoid is great, feels a bit cleaner, maybe more like Impetuous Rituals "Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence" (one of the best DM albums ever).

Ive also been spinning Chelsea Wolfes entire discography alot. And the New Defeated Sanity album, genius Brutality if ever i have heard it. AAAAAAAAAAnd rounding out my listening habits with a liberal sprinkling of Profanatica. and the new Mournful Congregation. and i think thats it... probably not...

Doing a bit of an Acid Mothers Temple marathon because of a choice I made early in their career to ignore them based on their insanely prolific output. That said, I did so with the knowledge that I would miss some gems (fortunately I didn't miss La Novia which is still my favorite.) 'Absolutely Freak Out (Zap your mind!!!) is an amazing one that I should have bought--now it is expensive and hard to get.

The cover is potentially NSFW, so click on this link with caution:

A long time ago, I listened to an album called Hypnotic Underworld by a Japanese band called Ghost. Seemed OK, but it didn't stick with me and I moved on. Last week I got the idea to give it another spin and damn, it's really good.

Also brings to mind another Japanese band called Sigh, that I saw some promise in years ago but didn't try too hard to get into. I guess I'll be giving them another spin sometime soon.

The first album by Ghost is really good, then everything after that slowly fades. Hypnotic World was (at least for me) something of a comeback album.

Yeah. Good year for music, here.

Boris is also touring through SF, but I'm not sure if I really want to see them. One night they're playing Flood in it's entirety and the venue has couches so I may go to zone out.

I just don't know.

Not an album – rather 12" singles – but right now I'm obsessively listening to and buying lots of stuff from classic UK jungle label Congo Natty. Tunes like Code Red are taking up all my ear time right now.

Sigh are one of my faves. Hail Horror Hail is their best album, IMHOtep, but Imaginary Sonicscape would be a good one to start with. Everybody loves that. :)

(Or just listen to everything chronologically, if you're up for it. Each album tends to be more ambitious and eclectic than the last - with one or two notable exceptions - so it's fun to observe the development of their style...)

Yeah Nile are pretty fucking great. They don't take themselves too seriously either:

Personally I much prefer Annihilation of the Wicked or Black Seeds of Vengeance over their most recent albums, please check those out if you haven't. Or ask Sapz, he's more of a metalhead than me.

RNGMaster: That poster of Nile is freaking awesome  did you go to that show? Speaking of Nile's older albums, I love it when they play slow on the albums In The Beginning and At The Catacombs of Nephren-ka. I know my list was long but really that was just to see if anyone else here listens to some of the same stuff. Oftentimes I start humming only to realize how much I really enjoy good videogame music. They play to me without forcing the lyrical side of things in my head. Sometimes I just want to enjoy some tunes without having so much to think about  . On another note Iron Maiden is also or at least was huge in Japan. Damn I love Japanese maybe that's why I married one :D

In somniphobia is by far my favourite album of 2012. I bought their gallows gallery remaster that was released a few months ago and that's pretty sick too.

Nice one! I still can't believe how many fans felt 'let down' by Gallows. Always loved how maudlin it sounded in spite of all the catchiness. (Although this always affects my own mood embarrassingly strongly.) :P

Currently listening to the new Darkthrone. It's NWOBHM as fuck. I'm not too keen on all of it, but the first and last tracks are great. (Also listening to the new Suffocation, which is making all the right noises but somehow boring me rigid.)

Fistula - Northern Aggression - Holy shit is this not the best sludge I've heard in awhile. Filthy gutter sludge/punk with grinding blasts. Check out "Lightbulb Smoker"for a taste of the fury.

Happens with most bands that release something very different to the predecessors. Especially when it comes to black metal.

Continuing to go through the Acid Mothers Temple catalog. There is a consistent negative relationship between the quality of he album and whether it is still available or not.

This time round it is Minstrel in the Galaxy, a slow burner that is really one 50 minute track in the vein of post-electron popul vuh. Takes a long time to build (literally the first 10 minutes are the most achingly slow build) but ultimately the album is something special. And of course, it is out of print.

Don't mind the new Suffocation, Inversion being the stand out track from memory. But yeah, it isn't keeping me coming back for more at the moment. Doug Cerrito and Chris Richards were pretty important ingredients in what made Suffocation so great back in the day I think, their absence since the reformation is telling.

Acid King damn Fistula has some serious psychiatric riffage going on there :!: I like but I wish they would pick up the tempo from time to time. I find those extremely heavy riffs more satisfying when they arrive after an onslaught of speed that builds up during a song that increases with intensity and velocity and finally comes crashing down. I had to hear some good ol' "In The Name of Suffering" a true masterpiece from Eyehategod

Feelin' nostalgic so i popped by here. Does my blackened, shriveled heart good to see CMoon and Acid King still in the house.

So, in the spirit of nostalgia, some old faves of mine i pulled out recently:

Om - Conference of Birds
Candlemass - Ancient Dreams
Meat Beat Manifesto - 99%
Frontline Assembly - Iceolate single
Pete Namlook and Richie Hawtin - From Within 1
Entombed - Left Hand Path

And some newer (but not new) ones:

Mean Jeans - Are You Serious? + 5 singles cassette
I Fail - Highways EP
Cococoma - Things Are Not Alright

Got some promos for review...

Pombagira - Maleficia Lamiah - Psychedelic stoner/doom from the UK
eyeswithoutaface - warguts - Crazed electronic/industrial sludge from Toronto
Regard Les Hommes Tomber - s/t - Blackened hardcore from France. Saw a few people here drop Celeste, definitely check these guys out if you're a fan.

Fistula speed it up regularly on the last few EPs they released (Loser, Goat, We the Beast, Northern Aggression) but their previous full lengths all all down trodden narcotic sludge. The old stuff is great (especially For a Better Tomorrow) but the new shit is just crazy.
