Re: 10th Annual Top 25 Shmups of All Time - Results
Gradius V still has all of the best ingredients from side-scrollers. People stopped playing it because they were tired of the wood chipper sounds from their PS2s trying to run it.

Amazing how much more interesting that list just became to mechempop wrote:In my eyes there should be a cave only list and everything else list. It's nearly pointless seeing which few oddball games get mixed up by chance. Seems like anything oldschool or hori just isn't very popular these days. Understandable, but also sad. Sure the honorable mention has some decent non-cave games.. oh why not:
The non-CAVE ver.
1 ) Battle Garegga
2 ) Armed Police Batrider
3 ) Batsugun
4 ) Raiden Fighters Jet
5 ) Mars Matrix
6 ) Gunbird 2
7 ) Radiant Silvergun
8 ) Dragon Blaze
9) Strikers 1945 II
10 ) R-Type
11 ) Ikaruga
12 ) Giga Wing
13 ) Battle Bakraid
14 ) Soukyugurentai
15 ) Gradius Gaiden
16 ) ... crap, I was going to add honorable mentions, in order.. but they aren't ordered by ranking it seems, just alphabetically.
Swap Raidant Silvergun for some Super Fantasy Zone or Thunderforce 3 and this would be a near perfect list. (I love me some Cave, but I'm just tired of seeing there game dominate these lists)

Gradius V does have its faults though, namely the ridiculous play length. I also feel while the new graphics look good, they do lack a lot of the visual charm that Gaiden has.Rob wrote:Gradius V still has all of the best ingredients from side-scrollers. Sorry for the off-topic, but do you mean a click-click-click sound after inserting a disc, before it starts spinning? I have a couple of old optical drives that do this, does anyone know what's causing it? Which part of the drive assembly would need to be replaced to fix it?Sly Cherry Chunks wrote:I tried it in epsxe2 and could still hear that sound in my head.Rob wrote:Gradius V still has all of the best ingredients from side-scrollers. I actually find that to be one of the best things about Gradius V. It's not just a game, it's an adventure. An odyssey. And let's not forget about the fact that, graphically, all previous entries pale when compared with Gradius V.

Its the sound of your PS2 spinning the CD for the entire length of the game. So - I'm no hardware expert but for some reason this game has to spin the CD super fast while it's running. -Thats nothing though, I nearly set Gradius Gaiden on fire trying to play it directly from the CD through epsxe (on my shitty old PC).Friendly wrote:Sorry for the off-topic, but do you mean a click-click-click sound after inserting a disc, before it starts spinning? Gradius V was really good but it's design needed "tightening". Definitely a shmup for the home.

For the top-loading PS2s, blue disc noise doesn't sound as noticeable to me if I lay something like a book on top of the console.
I don't see myself playing Gradius V through from start to finish again, but with stage select and score attack, the individual stages can be taken as challenges in their own right.

Also worth noting:
Only 2 horizontals in the top 25
12 horizontals in total (top 25 and honorable mention).
I guess memorizers are just too hardcore for this forum.

I never understood the whole "memorizer" thing. Many bullet hells are just as "memorizors" as old school shmups like r-type or Gradius games.EmperorIng wrote:I guess memorizers are just too hardcore for this forum.

Memorizer = It's hard because it requires memorization
Regular = It requires memorization because it's hard
Another thing is, in a "memorizer" like R-Type, the correct path through a situation is generally a lot more esoteric and difficult to figure out, and on top of that it's a LOT harder to recover from. If you screw up in R-Type, you basically get backed into a corner with no chance to escape whatsoever (the game might as well flash a "YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD" message 3 seconds before this happens).
Gradius is not a memorizer IMO (except on certain stages) because even when you screw up and take the "wrong" path, you can generally make a come back and survive anyway if your good (for example, accidentally leave several enemy spawners alive and you can still survive with good bullet dodging fundamentals, it's just really really hard). It's just that a whole game full of those kind of stunts is a bit daunting.
Also aside from certain beginner traps (the walkers in Gradius II, for example), the level design in Gradius is generally a lot more intuitive and easy to figure out just by taking a look at with some analytically thought.
Darius on the other hand is a semi memorizer imo, because even though you can recover from mistakes and the level design is pretty intuitive, you still have to carefully know where all the power ups are in order to survive long enough to power up, cause if you don't you'll have no crowd control and you'll just get zerg rushed by a million fast bullet spewing popcorn enemies.
so yeah IMO that's the deal with memorizers.

Ahahah! 3 DoDonPachi games on the same list?!
And what's with Battle Garegga scoring No.1 every single year?! It's an ok game, but come on now, it's not that great!

Yeah, I know. The R8ZING game that ought to be on the T25 list is DIMAHOO / GMD. The game is way better than BG and BR. Problem is: there are not as many boards laying around--that and it's hard to rack up monster score. Game should be right up there with MARS MATRIX and GIGA WING.ST Dragon wrote:Ahahah! 3 DoDonPachi games on the same list?!

I couldn't agree more with this entire post. Though, nothing says "vertical shooter with lots of shit blowing up" like DoDonPachi. But I don't know what the deal is with BG always winning the top spot. I'd prefer Dimahoo as well (though maybe not for #1-- it gets a little cheap IMO).ST Dragon wrote:Ahahah! 3 DoDonPachi games on the same list?!

But there was a lot that I liked on the list. I'm happy to see Batsugun doing well, and I enjoy most of the games on the list to some degree or another. I'm baffled by Soukyugurentai doing better than RayForce though. And it would be nice to see more horizontal games as well as some more console releases on the list. I guess they've fallen out of favor as the board has leaned more towards manics, but they're great games nonetheless.
Ikaruga's on the list. If you want to play to Max Chain, that thing is definitely a "be in the right pixel at the right time" memorize-fest. I don't like playing it that way, and of course it's not mandatory like it is in R-Type, but it definitely has a strong element of that if you want to "play it right".Vyxx wrote:I never understood the whole "memorizer" thing. Not pleased that only 1 Gradius made the top 25, no Paro's, and no Rayforce. But that's the way the forum flows, one year you're top dog, the next something else is, tastes change from year to year, mine surely do (except Gradius Gaiden and Rayforce, hot damn do I love these 2).

Settle down, I'm double-checking the list right now
EDIT: Okay here's how this works. Platforms are generally only specified if someone did so in their ballot, same with lesser-known versions or namings (accounting for space limitations). I've added in grouped games or better-known titles (e.g. Astro Invader) in some cases where I felt it significant. The columns from left to right are: Position, game, final score (/10), number of votes, and total weighted score.
Games receiving a single vote: 140
Total games tied for a position: 113
First tie at position 195
Highest number tied for a single position: 8 @ pos 311

Proof that Ibara needs a better modern port, or make it back into normal MAME.

Harsh truth Now if only those pesky other hundred or so games would get out of the way of both.KAI wrote:Exelica>Radirgy? fraud or stupidity?

List looks good, a ton of Cave but a good lot of my favorites are there so I can't complain.
Noticed only one other person voted for Bio-Hazard Battle, shameful.

Futari is undoubtably higher due to combining ver. 1.5 and black label - at least when comparing to it's ranking in the previous year's lists.

The same thing happened with daioujou last time. It was a bit further down before they decided to merge them (although their alot more similar then futari 1.5/bl anyway) though.Some-Mist wrote:me and you both.MrChiggins wrote:And my IT'S NEVER GONNA HAPPEN BUT I STILL WUV YOU Award goes to:

I think I read that it happens because the CDs are lighter than DVDs and they slip around in the disk tray. I used the tape trick on games that were making grinding noises or giving disk read errors - it's worked for me so far without any problems;Friendly wrote:Sorry for the off-topic, but do you mean a click-click-click sound after inserting a disc, before it starts spinning? I have a couple of old optical drives that do this, does anyone know what's causing it? Which part of the drive assembly would need to be replaced to fix it?
