Tetris Grand Master 3

Post by roushimsx »

Homepage

I've got my hopes up that this will see a home port, because there hasn't been a console Tetris game with decent blocks "physics" since The New Tetris, imo. Don't much see why people love the DX version on GBC either, as that one is a bit too buggy and I don't like the scoring system on it :(

Never understood why the Grand Master series hasn't made it to the home consoles. I've dumped plenty of money into them in the arcade and thanks to Zinc and MAME I've been able to play them at home for a little while now, but they go widely unknown because of the lack of home ports :(

Don't mean to derail your topic or anything roushimsx, but that's one damn fine avatar you've got there. Madman is just very, very cool.
Please continue with the subject....

Not to further derail it, but thanks! :)

It pains me that my Oddity Odyssy TPB is so torn up right now from years of abuse and rereading. I think the one I have is long out of print too, which means no more flipbook-style dancing Frank Einstein :'(

Pardon my naivete, but what's the difference between the first and second, and how will this one differ from those? With something like Tetris it's [near] impossible to alter the rules without losing the original feel or downright bastardizing the gameplay.

Now that is sweet. On Type-X too.

Now if we could just find a TGM2 cheap outside Japan it would go nicely in MAME.
I had been told Arika had lost the Tetris license after they failed to prosecute some freeware Tetris game that looked similar.. Guess not.

Arika at least used to host videos of the earlier games in the series, it was very impressive to see people reach the title of "Grand Master". The game gets insanely fast and in the end the blocks turn invisible yet they still keep on playing without screwing it up. I'd love to get my hands on this.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

They still have those TGM videos up

The difference between the TGM series and most other versions of the game are the scoring system, the leveling/ranking system, the speed, the "block physics", the ghost block on the bottom that show where you're going to drop to (some other versions have it as well, such as TNT :) ), and the insane difficulty level (especially when the bricks go invisible)

Since I have a ghetto PC, it's not all that hard to play in MAME (mmm...half speed ... :)), but I still fire it up in Zinc for a good round of getting my ass handed to me. Awesome awesome awesome game.

Bummer that TGM2 is so expensive still :(

Yeah, I traded the DX version of Tetris becuase I like the original b/w GB Tetris and the GBC Mickey's Magical Tetris Challenge better. Magical Tetris Challenge is surprisingly good. It has a good amount of unique variations, good physics, and controls like the original GB Tetris. Quest mode, a mode where you talk to different characters for challenges is a blast too. Also on the GB is Tetris Blast/Super Bombliss, a very good Tetris variation where making lines sets off bombs. I hate to say it, but compared to these other GB Tetris variations, Tetris DX is rather weak IMO.

I would like to know a bit more about this Tetris Grand Master series. How does it compare to other arcade versions of Tetris like Atari's Tetris? How does it compare to home versions like the infamous Tengen NES Tetris and the original computer versions of Tetris?

What's bad about Tetris DX? I particularly like how it automatically zips your block quickly in either direction if you hold down the d-pad, instead of having to frantically press 5 times in half a second to get it to the edge. This is really key at maximum speeds. I can play a single game at level 30 for ages with this - but if I play any of the Tetris games before it, I cramp very quickly.

Arika's Tetris the Grand Master obviously has something along these lines though, and it's way faster too - I'd like to try it someday.

I seem to recall hearing that an XBox360 port was being planned, but I can't recall exactly where I saw that.

^^^ The news about the next Tetris The Grand Master being an Xbox 360 game. Apparently it's a sequel to the third one, which is still really new.

No seriously I'm a big puzzle fan and at one in time all puzzle games will be hunted down like ......shmups.

Start collecting, aaaw there all the same...hmmmm that's what people said about shmups too, and even though it might be true to some extent, so what>>>> if it rocks it rocks

I think i'd like predicting the piece selection in tetris for once. Seems like they don't starve you of certain pieces. Sounds like a interesting version of tetris. Thank's Deets.

Do other home versions of tetris do piece selections like in Grand Master?
