9/26/05: A sad day for arcades

Post by Jedah Doma »

Well folks, I had a bit of bad news today here in my town. I went to Towne East today (the east mall in our city) and had some time to burn, so I thought I would go to the local arcade and play a few rounds of Tekken 5 or Time Crisis 3 in the arcades with the real gun. The arcade is called Aladian's Castle. As I enter the mall, I see a big truck like this:

I thought hey, they're bringing in some new games, that's awesome. So I stop and see what's going on as I'm on the phone with a friend. So I go in, and when I get inside, this is the terror I saw:

I was in shock. This was the arcade I grew up on. It's ben around for over 20 years, and it was apparently shut down. I stopped one of the workers and asked what was going on. It seems the mall wanted too much for the space they were renting out, and so Namco, the head of Aladian's Castle, said they wouldn't pay that much. So, they had to pack up and leave for good. I also talked to one of the truck drivers who said this is happening all over the place. He said he's had a lot of folks come by and ask what was going on. Not even mall security knew about this. It was so quick. I tried to buy some of the cabs off of him, but they were being moved to other locations in the U.S.

This was a sad day indeed. This was the arcade where I had spent many tokens on games. I had many birthday parties there as well. Hell, I grew up all my life playing games from the late eigthies until this present day. The arcade was huge and had multiple floors. Back in the day, it was quite a site to be seen. Over the years, it's had less and less games, but it was still fun to go into. I knew this time would come, but it just sucks to see it happen. Oh well, as the famous Namco game says, "The legend will never die".

There was a Dream Machine down the street in the Mall where I lived. Namco ended up buying that out and turning it into a Cyberstation. They then remodeled the food court and decided not to include the Arcade :(

How lame.

Never were any shmups there though :(

Just alot of Racers and Fighters

Hey, that's nothing, believe me!

In this part of the world where I live, 3 years ago, a worthless TV reporter (Makis Triantafillopoulos) who makes these crap-ass TV shows about corruption n' such, accused all arcade suppliers & owners, that they can easily convert all arcade cabinets into "Fruit Machines" where people spend all their life savings, close their houses & destroy their families. As a result he managed to convince the state & government that all arcades, including handheld consoles, & mobs, should be considered as devil spawned machines & be despatched immediately in a country-wide radius!

As a result all arcades are now considered illegal in Greece & at some point you could have even been arrested & prosecuted for using a GBA linked with your Pal's GBA in public, just in case you were conducting illegal bets & earning money without paying taxes to the state.

Here is an old thread on this:

And an article:

Even Internet Café’s suffered because of this guy…

:x

His previous life:

So I never got to play Metal Slug 5, KOF2003, Samurai Shodown 5, etc...
:(

If somebody wants to spend all his money on gambling, well that's his choice, but you can't close other people's business that had nothing to do with the incident, just because this guy wanted to raise his TV popularity.

Yes we have some really retarded TV jokers in this country & an even more laughable government.

But that's another story...

That seriously bites. Talk about losing a lot of personal nostalgia. :(

Also, a lot of locally owned businesses have been forced out of our local mall due to outrageously sky high rental prices. Mall owners want big bucks from nothing but huge chains now, but that is just extortion forcing out Alladin's Castle, not like they're a small time mom and pop business.

Well this pales in comparison to ST Dragon's story, but my local arcade just shut down less than a month ago. It had an ultracade machine with 1942, 1943, Truxton, Hellfire, Varth, Zero Wing, and a ton of other classics. It had Rockman: the Power Battles and the original Street Fighter too, both of which are prettymuch impossible to find anywhere around here.

I miss the Aladdin's Castle that used to be in the local mall. It became a tilt a long time ago with less games and more redemption machines. It also shrunk compared to Aladdin's Castle. There are no more redemption machines there, but it is still small in comparison and there are no shmups in the arcade. They also have a big SNK vs. Capcom SVC Chaos there. At least they still have House of the Dead 1 (last time I checked).

Sad indeed, Jedah Doma, but you're lucky the arcade lasted that long. Here in Colorado, most were either removed, or stripped down to mostly VR crap, starting in about 1997.

The arguement at that time was that home consoles were getting so advanced that nobody cared about arcade games anymore. Bull. I played the crap out of Area 51 and Blood Brothers at my college's arcade, and so did many other students, before it was removed.

But that's not real. They're closing because people become increasingly more scared of unplanned social interaction. Especially parents.

I think it's a combination of all the above really.

Surely people have gotten lazier, less social & would prefer playing games in the luxury of their living room on a 29" TV, but parents are also more worried with the increasing amount of drugs & shit, taking place in these "dark" & "sinister" arcade rooms.

^^ Hey man, that sucks about the arcades considered evil. And to think the word "democracy" comes from Greek language. >_<

Well, this is not a case of the government not being democratic really, (We have the most extreme form of democracy & freedom, where anybody can do almost anything & get away with it...!) but merely a case of the state being totally stupid & convinced by a TV joker who wanted to raise his TV credit figures.

They also figured that they were losing a lot of taxes from guys conducting illegal gambling on arcades.

So closing them all down, was the "wisest" solution for them.

Shit. Another one bites the dust.

My arcade was a very small one. I think it still exists but they had too little money to fix the neon sign out front so 'Blazing Flippers' became '...'. That's just how bad it was i guess. The last time i went home the arcade was still there (sporting the same damn crappy games, mind you) and that was about 6 months ago. I suppose it's still there - being supported solely by the mallrats and pool-playing rednecks that where hanging out there before. Sigh... it's not like they make too many good arcade games anymore anyway.

One day maybe i can collect a bunch of cool cabs and open up a 'retro' kinda hangout.

Had one of these arcades in my local mall. Chuckie Cheeses put it out of busness when they allowed the dance games in their game room.

Anymore, it's reached the point where if I want to play arcade games I have to buy my own. Heck, even the pizza places that have any decent arcade games seem to be closing down. At least I have my cabinet now, and I'm starting to acquire most of the games I care about getting.

I'm lucky I live by a university with a very up-to-date and quite successful arcade, although I'm getting pretty close to my (realistic) dream PCB collection too. I used to just go there to play ESP RaDe but I have the PCB now anyway :\ Maybe if I ever have an uncontrollable desire to play Dragon Blaze I might go back...

Man, I'm really sorry to hear about your arcade. I know your pain all too well though. Quick story for anyone interested. I had ONE arcade around me when I was about 8, or 9 years old. At this time I was just starting to enjoy it. They had some great games, mini golf, batting cages, free kick ass Halloween parties (free golf, games, donuts etc.), and the owners were top notch. Now get this: the owner of the plaza, Benderson ( www.benderson.com ) FORCED this arcade off his property, tore it down, and built a fucking parking lot which is virtually unused to this day (12 or so years) later. So yeah, just remember Benderson is a piece of shit.

My mall used to have an Aladdin's Castle which was light years ahead of the Namco Time-Out arcade we currently have. One thing I really hate about this Time-Out is that it's too well lit- meaning monitor glare on some screens.

For many of the arcade games I really want to play, I either have to buy the PCB or resort to ports. Time-Out has too many racers and some outdated games. Time Crisis 2? Come on, what about 3? Suzuka 8 Hours? 500GP would be better. Area 51 Site 4? Why not Target Terror Gold instead? Sometimes I wish the Time-Out chain had a different owner. I think Namco may favor certain locations over others and ours seems to have drawn a short straw.

This Time-Out did have Tekken 5 and it seemed to be doing very well, but the HMFICs at Namco had it moved to another location, apparently because they thought it could earn more elsewhere. Now the newest game there is Soul Calibur II- what a joke.

I wish the dance game thing would lose some steam.

Now that Makis Triantafillopoulos sounds like a real TV sleazemonger. I wish all tabloids and reporters like him would just frigg off.
Kinect? KIN NOT.
