PS4 support?
PS4 support?
Now that the PS4 has been presented and there are lots of news about it, do you know if Cave, Moss or other shmup developers have confirmed that they will be releasing games for this console? Or will I have to buy again a Microsoft console to enjoy future shmups?

I think the question is a bit premature. Especially with the "state" the shmup market is in right now. I don't think we really know if Cave or other devs will be supporting any of the new consoles at all yet. My money would be on WiiU right now, but that is just a gut feeling.

I'm certainly suspecting CAVE will go with MS again, regardless of how sales in Japan are. My line of reasoning, is Microsoft has already helped CAVE out a ton and will probably continue to help, so long as they stay on their console.

Would be funny if Microsoft's console runs on ARM (and appropriate too given that I'm sure they want some of their RT / 8 experience to come to something).
We haven't even seen anything about what Microsoft might be planning so it's obviously premature to speculate in that arena. However strong or weak the PS4 is, it'll be measured in part by the competition.

Whether or not the PS4 turns into the niche shmup developer's weapon of choice depends on the following:
- Will the architecture be horribly difficult to program for, as with previous machines
- Will Sony be insufferable assholes over 2D games
- Will Sony's development fees be higher/lower, and their terms more/less attractive than the competition
- Will the console's userbase be attractive to developers
- Will developers remain steadfast in clumping together to cockblock Sony from having a decent shmup, as they did this gen, just for the lol of it

They haven't been helping recently. I doubt we'll see any shmup devs move to next gen consoles for the first few years anyway. Niche genres tend to linger on current platforms longer than mainstream stuff. For reference, the 360 released in 2005 and it didn't see a real disc-based shmup till Dec 2007 Shikigami III, and only had a few more in 2008.
The last time I can think of when a shmup released (physical release) with a console launch was PS1 Raiden Project. Let me know if there were any more recent ones though.

Most likely this is what will happen, but I'm unsure as to what CAVE will do, SDOJ is supposed to be their last 360 shmup and they have been very quiet recently. PS4 needs to have a much broader acceptance than PS3 when it comes to the types of titles you can play on it. I would personally like if a retro HD type of company came about where they did some 2D but in a Pixar HD polygon mould. With the amount of power PS4 has surely this is a doable thing? The amount of particles and lighting that could be applied to retro games could make them look Pixar-ish and still maintain 60fps. I'm tired of the fact that anything retro ish that gets this type of treatment ends up being an arena based shmup like super stardust. There are many many other types of older games that could easily get the same treatment.

Well, agreed with you there. Really I think that good ol' pixel art still has a place, and there are people making good games of this type; a lot of it's just "casual" and relatively unknown in certain circles (i.e. this one).

I dunno. I think a colorful game like Parodius deluxe done in Pixar 2D would be doable on PS4. Remember in the good ole days we used to use such games to show of the palette through SCART RGB. Technically that sort of game (or others like a Bubble Bobble restoration/remake) would be fantastic. Mr driller is another good game that could do with a technical overhaul.

That's just vector art with gradients...but anyway, having cleared that up, yeah, I think the main problem here is not the art, but the gameplay behind it. There's plenty of reasonably good tower defense and HOG games out there, but little in the way of "classic" action type games.

But ultimately i'd like a Castlevania like SOTN.
The BB image up above was used to show the quality/resolution/facial expressions of the quality of the main characters I would like to see. I know they are not polygon based. If a polygon model was online I would have linked it.
