Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
I can say this with authority because this character is clearly this girl's mother. Note the passed-on flower charm...thing, which has leveled up and is no longer hat-dependent.
Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
Looking at some videos of people already playing the game it doesn't look as solid as Bayonetta with combat or pacing (not that I was expecting that, or would anyone really). Bosses and tougher enemies stuff look good enough though. Soundtrack sounds too cheesy hollywood movie like to me which is disappointing considering Bayonetta and Vanquish had good soundtracks. Difficulty looks about right at least, should keep me entertained if I enjoy the combat enough
edit: concerns I have for the game so far: too few weapons, small movesets. lots of unskippable codec sequences.. enemy attacks without audio cues.

Friend of mine was playing the full game today, it looks pretty neat.
I did notice he either died asap or killed everything handily, little middle ground between.

Embargo lifts in three hours, and I can blather on about this! I'm about five hours in.
Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
Been playing it all night... Combat is so fun.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Yeah, sometimes a good video game or classic arcade game themed T-shirt can be found at the local mall. If the golden opportunity presents itself, will get it as an "instant buy" right on the spot.
Is it recommended to get the PS3 or 360 version of Metal Gear Rising (in terms of consistant framespeed)? I have access to both consoles but would rather get the console version that's better with the overall consistant 60 "frames per second" framerate issue and no slowdown issues to contend with.

You must be referring to this horrible muzac that accompanies a good 80% of the action either on repeat or in remixed form. Either that or a really offensive rendition of Fly Me to The Moon.?Zaarock wrote:Bayonetta and Vanquish had good soundtracks.

I can't remember one track from Vanquish, and I have played that game at least 4-5 times on God Hard. There's not much in terms of music in that game, now that I think about it.

Fun fact: the reason there is a space harrier sequence in the game is because Kamiya loved the game as a kid and 1cc:d it. there is a developer commentary playthrough that has a lot of info about the development of bayonetta and games by clover studios.
I guess I was exagerrating with Vanquish a bit, I don't remember particular songs either but while playing I always find the soundtrack solid. Right after starting to play the game I raised the music volume a lot since it's barely audible by default though. You beat the game that many times on god hard? nice stuff. I think I'll try some more speedruns on normal for fun after playing rising for a bit.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:I can't remember one track from Vanquish, and I have played that game at least 4-5 times on God Hard. On topic: The VR missions for this look great, watched someone getting destroyed on some of the harder ones even after clearing the hardest difficulty (no-miss requirements, hard time requirements etc)
Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
I am predictable.I was expecting you to come in and make that commentThose songs are pretty annoying (esp. at first) but they are literally 2 songs out of over 100 in the soundtrack.. I was referring to it as a whole. Especially the boss themes are impressive IMO. And the level songs by the same composers as Okami have a nice atmosphere to them (though do at times sound out of place with the other upbeat themes) Remixes of classic sega title songs are a fun tribute, the outrun/afterburner bit at least.

Actually I'm ribbing you a little. The Bayonetta accompaniments, the orchestral and choir driven stuff, were actually very good. Problem is all you ever go away with is that angel attack theme, which is utter ungodly trash.

The game was developed on PS3, with the 360 version being a port. The PS3 version will also be getting an extra 30 or so VR missions as DLC at some point.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Yeah, sometimes a good video game or classic arcade game themed T-shirt can be found at the local mall. Eurogamer's verdict is that neither version holds 60fps throughout, especially when the physics engine is heavily taxed in blade mode, but the 360 version has the higher frame rate overall. However, cutscenes apparently look much better on PS3 due to lower video compression. So it depends which factor is more important to you.

Can anyone confirm that this game gives you a wide variety of moves to work with? If so, please explain. I'm hearing a lot about how "restrictive" it is. The claim could be total garbage, but there could also be some truth.
But I really want this game to be incredible. I have not been this stoked for a game in a long ass time.

Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
I haven't played it much yet. The combat seems to be pretty simple so far. Other than parrying attacks and stealth kills you mostly just use light and heavy attacks. They just kind of link together pretty easily. After the enemy has been softened up with some hits they can be sliced up. I think this is where the game has a little more depth. If you slice them on the red box indicated before their body hits the ground you can grab and crush their guts yielding a health refill. Slicing off hands and other parts seems to yield more points.Siren2011 wrote:Can anyone confirm that this game gives you a wide variety of moves to work with? If so, please explain. The game does have some really over the top action. It's a pretty wild ride. But I don't know about the replay value is going to pan out yet. I'm just playing it on normal difficulty right now.

Is hard mode accessible from the beginning?
The fact that you are so early in to it coupled with the fact that you're playing only normal mode gives me hope. I have little doubt that the enemies will get tougher, calling upon the player to find insane, alternate ways to crush adversaries.

Yes hard is open right off. If you enter the Konami code on the title screen it unlocks the most difficult setting.

Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
The game is pretty interesting. Sometimes I'll be like "this is good", and then it'll have some bonkers moment that raises my excitement levels.
You can seem to buy a lot of moves. Not Bayonetta level amount of moves, but there's definitely some. You start with almost nothing at the beginning. I think I've bought about 5 or 6 new moves, and there's some I haven't gotten yet.
Then, for boss weapons, you can buy moves for those. So, that opens up even more moves you can do. And you can double wield your HF Blade and your boss weapon, which makes for some interesting moments.
The soundtrack has an element of cheese to it, but I think it works. And some of the boss themes are actually really good.
The camera is pretty wonky though. Not as bad as Ninja Gaiden 2 or anything, but it seems to be in a world other than the one in the game sometimes.
And I'm still very disappointed that none of the harder levels limit the amount of energy you get from your foes. That really kind of mucks up the difficulty too much.

Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
The camera is giving me a pretty tough time. Parrying is a big part of the combat. When it suddenly switches direction before you parry and miss it because of the camera movement changing the direction that you need to parry, it's pretty annoying. Plus on boss fights the radar disappears so that makes it even easier to get attacked from behind. I think on the highest difficulty levels the enemies attack so fast that the radar isn't really of much help in parrying or avoiding attacks that you can't see. It doesn't make the game unplayable or anything. But it is definitely a annoyance, especially on higher difficulty levels.
Stealth is in, but it's pretty cheesy. I don't think doing a stealth run would be very much fun.
Still the game is pretty fun to play. It doesn't have hardly any downtime. S ranking every area in the levels will probably give some replay value I think. I'm mostly getting A and some S ranks without really trying that much. Cutting up enemies is pretty enjoyable. Finished it on easy and I'm doing a hard difficulty run right now. I thought the last few boss fights were pretty amazing. Pretty good, but I'd say Metal Gear Rising is a step down from Bayonetta and Vanquish.

Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
BUT, it's definitely better than MadWorld, Anarchy Reigns, and Infinite Space(people tend to forget Platinum has made other games, not directed by legends). Vanquish seemed to suffer from being too short too.MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:Pretty good, but I'd say Metal Gear Rising is a step down from Bayonetta and Vanquish.
I'll say this, MGR has some great boss battles.
The last boss seems to be a bit controversial. It's ridiculous, but god damn it's an awesome challenge/fight. That can't be denied.
I would give it an 8. It's not without faults, but it's got a lot going for it. I think it turned out really well, considering it was made from the left overs of a canceled game. Also, it was made quickly(had to be). And also made by a first time director. And this game is a blast, and worthy of the marks it gets. So, that's impressive to me. But what really matters is it's a really fun game.
I wish it was longer and had more detailed backgrounds(the Japanese Garden looked nice though). But time constraints, ay?

Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
Keep forgetting Platinum made Infinite Space. I was ridiculously excited about it for about a year before it came out, but it never really clicked despite it's pedigree. Anyone here actually rate it? I know it got very good reviews form magazines whose opinions actually count.
Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
Can anybody with a J360 here confirm wether the PAL version of this game will work on it? Would save me some importing...
Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
My US copy works on my Japanese 360. I don't think they made an NTSC-J version of the game for 360.
Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
Confirmed PAL Australian release works on my NTSC-J 360. Disc has a number of ratings logo's so I assume that this is the generic European/Oz/Nz PAL release.
Re: Metal Gear Rising (developed by Platinum Games)
Thanks for the info guys, I think I'll risk it. I'll report back once I get it.
