Recommended Macross (and other anime) shmups?

Post by Vetus »

I have noticed that anime francise Macross has a good reputation when it comes to good, 2D shmups based on it like Chouzikuu Yousai Macross – Macross II for arcades by Banpresto. Heck, even in java mobile phones it has been released a surprisingly good shmup based on Robotech. So I was wondering which other 2D shmups based on Macross would you recommend. Also, I would like to hear recommendations for 2D shmups based on other anime like Time Bokan Yattaman Series - Bokandesuyo for Playstation and Mazinger Z for arcades by Banpresto.

I really enjoy the Choujikuu Yousai Macross - Scrambled Valkyrie game for the Super Famicom, especially the great music.

Macross and Macross Plus for arcade aren't too bad, though I wouldn't put them quite in the same league as the others mentioned so far.

Banpresto had a loke test PCB version of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross used for play testing purposes in Japan with some very different cut scenes and stages but decided on the current PCB version released in both Japanese game centers and in the USA that was distributed by American arcade distributor, Fabtek, back in 1992. Of course, the USA version has the official title of "Super Space Fortress Macross" on the main title screen.

Tis a shame that the Macross II: Lovers Again PCB (circa 1993) wasn't officially distributed in the USA as no American arcade distros picked it up whatsoever and thus, it remained as a Japanese arcade shmup exclusive indeed (and vice versa with the 3rd and final Macross Plus PCB conversion kit as well).

I recall a fellow shmupper whom said something about Moss having a hand in making the Macross Plus PCB version as well.

There's the unofficial PC Engine Super CD-Rom2 shmup of Macross 2036 that was made without Studio Nue's guidance/input. Has an awesome opening intro cut scene and more shown in between stages as you progress further.

Yes, Area 88 was distributed by the American Capcom subsidy stateside under the proper title "U.N. Squadron" and it's pseudo-sequel of Carrier Airwing as well.
