Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers [3DS] - now with voices!

Post by cj iwakura »

I hope we can get a special thread for this game, 'cause I'm hyped.

English story trailer
JP Equivalent

For the unfamiliar, Soul Hackers is a port of a Saturn classic that was reportedly under consideration for localization but never made it.

It's equal doses occult, cyberpunk, and JRPG.

Now's the second chance!

Ridiculously excited about this game. I love late 32-bit RPGs, and my obsession for tile based first person dungeon crawlers is reaching an extreme. Soul Hackers just looks absolutely perfect. Can't believe how much good stuff the 3DS is getting at the moment.

I'm banking on this not coming to Europe. Luckily US 3DSs are cheaper than UK ones at least. Got a new, boxed flame red 3DS with an accessory kit for £102 inc P&P. A beat up unboxed 2nd hand 3DS in a nearby Cash Converters is going for £110. Asking in CEX, they say that's pretty much the going rate.

Sucks about the voice acting, but presumably there'll be a way to switch it off.

I always want to buy these games and do, but then I never actually play them. Maybe I should change that.

I'm still playing Perona 4 Golden (pretty good, btw). I assume this is not similar at all?

Not really, no. This is a cyberpunk occult first person dungeon crawler with demon negotiation and party members.

Spells and such are the same, though.

This and Etrian Odyssey 4 are why I'm buying a 3DS.

Shame EO4 and Soul Hackers are coming out in such quick succession. Will have to see if I can finish the former in the two months before the latter comes out.

For those wondering why Soul Hackers didn't make its way through to the US back when it was first released, note that although the SS version was first, Atlus USA had plans to localize the PS version. Guess who nixed that... This game is a lot more polished than the original Devil Summoner so folks will have a blast.

It's awesome Atlus has the means and the will to do stuff like this.

Does anyone seriously think that like, Live-a-Liver will ever see a rerelease?

Nah, Atlus USA has never backtracked on a game that it's promised. And Atlus Japan only seems to have expensive localization requirements for Growlanser.

SCEA was the culprit behind Soul Hackers not making it out of Japan. In fact, I recall that was the first major "scandal" that pointed out SCEA's ugly involvement in localization approval. There were earlier murmurings about anti-2D bias at SCEA QA—makes sense since it started well before when WD was refused the Arc the Lad license (although that wasn't ever publicly mentioned until after Arc Collection's release)—but nothing concrete until someone leaked out the Soul Hackers situation.

I like the Vita better as a system but it's certainly poetic justice that Soul Hackers will be making its international debut on the 3DS.

I just hope the ship hasn't sailed for its chances of success. I played the Saturn version to completion, and it's truly a fantastic game.

Interesting. This could be a great opportunity to get into the Shin Megami series for the first time. Problem is the confounded region locking, since I'm bound to a uk system currently. Any news on an EU release?

I guess an EShop release isn't out of the question, but given the fact that Etrian Odyssey 2, Etrian Odyssey 3, The Dark Spire and Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey were never released in the UK, it's very unlikely that Soul Hackers will be. I guess British people are just too busy playing Brain Training to get into tile based 1st person crawlers :(

Might really be worth buying a US 3DS if it will also get you access to all the ATLUS DS games.

Soul Hackers took me roughly ~45 hours to finish, and the Saturn version had less content than the PS1 version that this is a port of. This one has a new quest too involving Raidou, I think.

And Etrian Odyssey IV is coming out in the UK, so this following is not out of the question, and I hope it does.

Ghostlight's announced releases for the Devil Survivor series, so it's not completely hopeless...

... as long as you're willing to wait 3-5 years after the initial release.

... holy shit, can that even be called living?

Well, looks like there's some less-happy Megaten-related news too. Persona 2 Eternal Punishment will only be available in its original PS1 form (with the original translation's names). Meanwhile, the PSP version of EP won't make it outside Japan.

That's far better than nothing, it's been common knowledge that EP PSP was doomed for months, though supposedly a forthcoming PS Blog entry is going to explain why.

Not sure what anyone ought to expect other than "Japan is the only place that still buys PSP games, and you are not Japan."

The Atlus guy claimed it's not sales, shockingly. I can't fathom how it could be a source code issue for Eternal Punishment but not Innocent Sin.

Just swallow that Index pride and hire some hackers, sheesh.

You mean the roulette wheels? And yeah, the site has great background work, it's very subtle references to scenes from the game.

The music is great.
Press Turn is as glorious as ever. This and SH might actually seal the 3DS deal for me.

Also, Atlus in charge of spoiling boss weaknesses in their trailers.
