I'm a bit more intrigued by the "Android" thing next to it. Probably an announcement I missed long ago.

edit: Yeah, a quick search later and I can see it in the Android store  I have to stop working so hard and spend time playing more games!

But the future of arcades. If Nesica makes it cheaper and easier for arcades to stay open and profit as a business, no problem. There are very few significant new arcade titles that aren't ported to console anyway, so not worth crying over. Viva the arcade renaissance!

Not much of a renaissance with shitty PC hardware running all of the games :x

Look, we can't turn back the hands of time, I'll be thankful just to see arcades survive as an establishment regardless of the hardware. We've been into shitty PC hw for years now, it's not anything new. ;)

How does the NESICA system differ from other PC-based hardware? I'm curious if we might one day see cracks of them, similar to what's happened with the Bemani PC games. It seems that many of the NESICA games have differences from their console versions so it would be nice to know if they might pop up some day.

They've got a Nesica system sitting in the middle of the floor at this place:

Image

Completely unprotected where any asshole can go up to it and poke 'n prod. If one were so inclined (and were capable of lifting heavy objects) you could easily walk out the door with it.
They have 4 Nesica cabs in this place, and they're all connected via cat-5 cable to what looks like a tower PC sitting in the corner. When I go back I'll see if I can get some up close photos of all of her holes and ports.

As I recall the NESICA does things a bit differently from say, Taito Type X, so it'll be a while if ever in regards to finding cracks for the games.

Oh yes, please do.

Though, as BPzeBanshee mentions, I suspect there is an Internet-based authentication mechanism for NESICA that may prove trickier to emulate than the Type X games. Not impossible, as Steam authentication was cracked/emulated a long time ago, but still the hardware and software is probably generally less accessible and as also mentioned the games are usually already available for other platforms, so there is not much incentive to get the NESICA versions hacked as such.

Nesica is for Japan arcades only and downloads games from the web and then does some profit sharing with the credits put into each game. The previous popular PC based hardwares had game kits sold (hard drive and dongle and art to swap out). When you have that you have them resold by shops and Yahoo Japan so we can eventually get them. With Nesica the only way you could get them is if you had an arcade operator allow someone to go copy them and then post them on the web. That might happen some time with a few of them but the majority will be overwritten with newer games and nobody outside of Japan will ever see them. Of course they could make a worldwide system for outside of Japan and re-release them on that but it's still a bunch of shit.

So I guess my question is... is this a port of the NAOMI original, or is it a conversion of the XBLA revision of the game? If it's the latter then ugh....

Aren't there some patterns that are thrown out backwards among other things?

I also seem to recall some issue with the way the energy lasers lock on to enemies. I don't think anything is seriously broken, just requires you to tweak your play a bit vs more faithful versions.

It's far more than that. Unfortunately, the thorough comparison thread over on super-play no longer exists. Some info is still in this thread.

Who wanna bets they base this version of the xbox port and simultaneously annoy all the arcade superplayers?

EDIT: heh I should really read threads more closely.

There is one mistake. The Conquest mode is from the GC version, not the DC.

I can't help but wonder if Nesica is really a way to keep Mamedev from emulating current arcade games.

From an emulation perspective, that really sucks. :(

There's no need to emulate. It's a way to prevent bootlegging, which can be done at home, for about no cost provided compatible PC components (chances are you already have them), and a dump and loader for the game. Which can be done by a decent (not even high-level, just a decent one should be able to do it) hacker and access to the game systems.

So this game has been out for a couple weeks now. I gave it a try the other day, but what little practice I had with Ikaruga is of course all gone. I couldn't tell you whether the game is closer to the Xbox360 version or not, but it seems the most likely given that Type X2 is PC-based.

The national rankings are up at the Treasure site, which is pretty interesting:

http://ikaruga-nxl.treasure-inc.co.jp/

Currently Melon-ojisan and AUM AUN are #1 and #2 in the Normal mode category with 32,752,080 and 32,409,610 points respectively.

There was also an article on the NESiCA version in Arcadia this month. The three additions to the arcade version (besides score rankings) are: Prototype Mode, NESiCA card achievements and Chapter Select. Nothing that hasn't been in the home versions AFAIK so you aren't missing out.
