Shmupping after jogging
Shmupping after jogging
I went for a 5 mile jog, and still on a runner's high, I popped in Batsugun. Somehow, everything seemed more casual, like the bullets were slower and I had more time to react. I've also had this experience listening to music after a hard run: the tempo sounds slower than it does normally.
Has anyone else tried this? I'm pretty sure hard exercise can alter your perception. It can't be just me!

Noting unusual, variations in the blood flow change your time perception.

Re: Shmupping after jogging
I thought I was the only person who did this. Pretty much after every workout, I immediately sit down at my cab (sweat and all) and always score a great game - most of the time beating my previous high score. I find myself much more focused and relaxed -louisg wrote:I went for a 5 mile jog, and still on a runner's high, I popped in Batsugun. I used to think the game was intimidated by my massive guns... maybe it's something else.

I haven't tried this for shmups, but enjoy it for other activities requiring concentration (translating etc). I still attribute my success in my first year of law school to a pre-class running regimen.

This sounds interesting. I always thought I used to do better when I felt really hyped up and excited. I'll have to try this.

As long as it's not too cold outside. Playing video games with frozen hands is hilariously ineffective.

I get the same slower game effect sometimes. It's nothing to the extent of Espgaluda slowdown but it definitely makes the game easier.

I haven't tried shmups, but the effect has typically been the opposite for me.

I've noticed this after all sorts of workouts, not just jogging.
It was actually after a Son Goku-like workout session that I first beat Super Ghouls n' Ghosts.

Yeah I've noticed my pitiful scores to be better after a trip to Planet Fitness...waiting for the wife to nearly use up all the hot water in the shower.
Waiting on the end!(Whether that's the world or a burrito in the microwave changes daily.)

I find no-missing TFIII Maniac while doing bouncing cock pushups on the controller to be a fine warmup for more strenuous gaming such as a Zanac Neo 1CC. ^_~

That's not what he means. He is saying that because of the perceived slowing of the game he has an easier time playing the game, not "ah who gives a shit, let the bullets hit me"Bananamatic wrote:This is a bad thinglouisg wrote: Somehow, everything seemed more casual

Re: Shmupping after jogging
I'm glad you brought this up. I just about 1ccd Guwange tonight out of the blue and I felt completely in the zone. I didn't consider much that I had just come back from a long run with my dog. I did feel totally different. My nerves were more steady and my concentration felt spot on. It depends however. I remember in the past coming home from the gym and just getting brutalized at sf4, but at other times I would dominate for 20 or 30 matches straight. I think there is a tipping point where you get that high from exercise but if you overdo it you can become mentally and physically fatigued.

To be fair, Sf4 is also a game of rock/paper/scissors style reads, so slightly heightened reflexes might not help you if your just being out played in that area.casualcoder wrote:I'm glad you brought this up. I don't think that's accurate at all but even if it is, perceiving slower play will help you make the right reads. At high level play it's all about confidence and controlling your nerves. If you can't do that, the game all of a sudden seems like a blur happening before your eyes. I find the concentration needed in competitive SF to be on par with any STGs I've played. To be fair, Sf4 is also a game of rock/paper/scissors style reads, so slightly heightened reflexes might not help you if your just being out played in that area.

I'm not saying that fighting games don't take nerves and reflexes, but what I'm saying is that there's definitely a strong element of strategy and reading your opponent that makes a huge difference. If you choose to attack and he does a psychic dragon punch or ultra, you can't really "dodge" that. That's just one example, but that's the way a lot of fighting games are designed, to make it so "nothing is safe" and everything has a counter.casualcoder wrote:I don't think that's accurate at all but even if it is, perceiving slower play will help you make the right reads. I agree with you that fighting games concentration is on par with stg concentration. And that it really takes all the skills you have to pull out a win.

That's fair. Certainly much of the game is about strategizing based on your competitors past tendencies, which isn't exactly using reflexes.Squire Grooktook wrote: I'm not saying that fighting games don't take nerves and reflexes, but what I'm saying is that there's definitely a strong element of strategy and reading your opponent that makes a huge difference. I can totally vouch for this as well.
Especially after you've done something especielly meaty, like running Ranger Trail or something and you've got endorphins out the ass.
