PS4 / Xbox One console war

Post by Friendly »

Code: Select all

ADMIN EDIT:
This thread is now officially a console war topic.

Ground rules:
* The console war will not operate outside of this topic.
* No personal attacks or direct abuse as per the usual rules.
* The Wii-U is to be considered off topic.
* Spin information in whichever way entertains you the most, but presented factual information must be true.
* No flooding the topic.
* No complaining about console wars - if you are not interested in it, read other topics.
* No image meme spam.

I believe it is the right of all gamers to back a company in a console war, as has happened since time began. I have selected the PS4, as I believe Microsoft must be punished for their attempted ruination of gaming despite having now changed almost every policy.
Update 4/11: Added Playstation4 to the topic so it's actually possible to find this topic when using the crappy forum search engine.

------------------

Update: Sony's conference is tonight, at 6pm EST, that's 11pm GMT.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Photos of a PS4 controller prototype and some infos have been leaked online. Apparently Sony will officially announce PS4 next week (on 2/20).

Image
(source: Destructoid / http://www.vgleaks.com/orbis-dualshock-layout/ )

It will have a PS Vita-like d-pad and a touchpad (multi-touch, and it clicks when pressed), concave analog sticks.
Larger grips than previous dualshock.
Supposedly it will feature a SHARE button that will allow you to upload a video of the last 15 minutes of your gameplay to share online.
As you can see it also has a large LED at the top which may be related to the next version of PS Move.
It also seems to feature a mic or speaker and a headphone jack.

EDIT: New picture
Image
Note the larger grips.

We'll learn more next week, when (most likely) PS4 is unvealed.

PS.
Kindly stay out of this topic if you don't care.

If it's really the same as PSV's, than that would be great. Have you tested it? It's quite excellent.

BWA HA HA HA! All my predictions have come true! It's a fucking Dual Shock... again!

All those years turning out superior technologies and these days the damn R&D dept just can't fathom a new controller. Pretty shambolic.

Thanks Friendly, made my night. :D

Looks like an aftermarket DS3.

Is that a space for sounds above the PS button?

^^^ Not like they came up with the wing-grip design to begin with. But yeah. Another dual shock.

ahahahahahahahahahahaha

Considering it's actually a little differently shaped, I think that's what Sony thinks of as "radically different".

And that Logitech controller is such a blatant DualShock clone, Sony's just paying back the favor. :P

Would be nice if the PS4 would have some sort of PS3 backwards compatibility... even though I'm 99% sure it's not going to happen.

Why? Because it clicks? Most people seem to prefer Vita's d-pad, it gets lots of praise.
I like it much better than the old (divided) pad. Feels soft but precise and doesn't hurt your thumb.

I find easier to imput comboes and skills with the original D-pad. The PSP D-Pad is even better for that task.

Are you kidding? It's basically impossible to hit diagonals with the PSP D-pad.

I will say though, the PSV does have a great D-pad, and I think it'd be great for that to be used instead of the shitty D-pads we've had on the DS2 and DS3.

This. I still use my DS1 for fighters just because the d-pad isn't as crap as the DS2. The DS3 one isn't so bad, but not as nice as the DS1's.

and the PSP D-pad is so damn bad

The DS2 pad is so awful  It's super squishy, and ends up really hurting my thumb. Quite lame.

The only problem with the DS2 and fighters is that some games have analog support for D-pad (you have to press hard so the game can take the input)

Change the D-pad rubber.

I've tried like 5 or 6 DS2's over the years, they're all like that.

If the pad is like the Vita's, I'm all for it. I absolutely love my Vita's D-Pad.

Though I still question their decision to not have the primary analog and D-Pad positions switched :/

Why can't they put a decent Saturn like D-pad in their controllers? Also, is it too much to ask for 6 buttons at the front?

I still like the futuristic batman PS-3 concept controller much better. It would have been great if they had actually implemented this design for the PS-4 but with a cross-D-pad instead of those separate directional buttons they've been using since the PS-1. Its just not as accurate and responsive as the regular cross-type D-Pads on the Saturn, SNES, Mega drive, etc...

I agree with the d-pad, but sadly 6 face buttons is an era passed. It would confuse FPS players, basically. Why the heck they can't relocate the analog sticks is beyond belief though, they've been in an outdated position for about ten years.

Sony's DS assimilation so far:

- Super Famicom pad rip: the original foundation.
- N64 is released: assimilate analog sticks.
- In-built rumble: steal from 3rd party, get sued.
- Gamecube pressure sensitive shoulder buttons: steal for DS3.
- Wii: assimilate motion sensor. Check.
- Wii-U multi-touch panel on controller: get.
- Start stealing from themselves: assimilate Vita D-Pad.

I can't wait for the PS4 announcement. I have a long list of predictions, and I'm curious to see how I did.

So that suspicously glossy black rectangle is a touchpad, and not a Wii-U-like (or Logitech super MMO keyboard-like) OLED screen? I suppose that's actually a good thing in some respects, but it will be harder to market as an advantage ("I caint see whar I'm a-goin on this thing!" the non-touch-typist crowd).

Nitpicking, but I seem to recall reading that the WiiU panel isn't multi-touch. Maybe I recall incorrectly though.

Ah okay then, let's cut Sony's R&D team some slack...

...On second thoughts, let's not. :)

Super pumped for the PS4 unveiling, although if it does turn out underwhelming I really don't think it will fare as badly as the Wii U. I think that's this gen's prize turkey.
