Should I get Sagaia for Genesis, or Darius II for Saturn?...

Post by dave4shmups »

I've read quite a few complaints about display issues with Darius II on the Saturn, but then again, it's got to be a closer arcade port then Sagaia on the Genesis.

I have Sagaia for the Genesis and it is fine for what it is. It does have that 16-bit feel but have not played it much since I got it. I am sure anything on the DC would blow it away.

Closer arcade port is not always the best. You should get Sagaia for Master System, in order to get a real "wow" from what the 8bit sega can do. 8)

... No, really, I just wanted to say that. ^_^ I have no experience with the other version. The only thing I know is that Sagaia on Genesis is just another shmup, while on SMS for obvious reasons, it's really something.

The Saturn version is really hard to play due to having to constantly zoom in and out. The MD version isn't all that close to the arcade, but who cares... it's more fun.

It looks like I'll be going for the Genesis one too, though I'm still highly interested in the GB one, which is actually a different game with elements from the first two Darius games.

The Saturn one is fine if you play 1P only and keep it fully zoomed out in order to see everything, but it's going to cost you some graphics quality. I tried once to play 2P and it was a pain- the screen would have the "Art of Fighting" effect. Hopefully with HDTV we can get a truly perfect port sometime- 720p resolution would be able to fit the whole 864x224 playfield on screen with full detail.

The Genny version ain't half bad. It was the first home port of the game on a slightly limited console. A very competent shmup in its own right.
Plus, the Genny/MegaDrive versions shouldn't be too expensive either.
8 MEGS Baby!!! The only other 8 Meg games out at that time where Strider,Gaiares, and well Sagaia.

Hey, wouldn't it be cool if Reno and Taito got together to create the bastard shmup "Sagaiares'?

I like Sagaia. It's a decent port that doesn't wow you visually but still retains that arcadey feel.

There's Darius II for Saturn? I always thought there was only one Darius game, and that's called Darius Gaiden which I own right now.

What this guy said. This is sorta the same reason I play Kyukyouku Tiger on my Turbo Express at work and refuse (for now) to buy Toaplan Shooting Battle or download the MAME rom.

There is just something "neat" about really good arcade ports on 16-bit (well yeah PCE is technically 8 bit) systems. Especially when they look and play great even though shrunk down and not in their true arcade display.

Get the Genny version, like others said while it's not a perfect arcade port, it's still heck of a lot of fun. And oh yeah the music rocks too. They did a really good job with the arrangement, sometimes I even prefer it over the original arcade music. :P

I second the SMS version, great stuff indeed :D

I can't say much about the MD one, but I have Darius II on Saturn... and it's a very good game.

Like gameoverdude said... if you play it fully zoomed out, you can enjoy it a lot, but will lose some graphic quality. (That's the way I play)

The Zoom-in-out effect in 2 players mode only happens if your teammate happens to be stupid enough to keeping press L or R all the time :)

After viewing that massive Saturn shooting video, I've decided to go with the Saturn version; seeing as how you can zoom in and out to your liking.

They tout it as a feature but it's more a gimmick. You don't ever need to zoom in Sagaia while it's pretty annoying to play in close-up view in the Saturn version. But hey, I guess it's the best they could do with ordinary monitors.

Taito did get the graphics and BGM close on Cadash for the Genesis. Forget for a moment that two of the characters were taken away- this was one amazing port that would've been about perfect if the Ninja and Priestess were kept.

The Megadrive/Genesis version also has Nehonojia- a boss that didn't appear in the arcade. It's decent.
