Forcing PS1 games to 60hz on PS2

Post by BuckoA51 »

My mod-chipped PS2 plays PS2 games just fine in their native 50 or 60hz but for some reason refuses to play even NTSC PS1 games at 60hz. I've heard that there are PS1 boot disks designed to force games into 60hz, even PAL games. Where would someone obtain such a disk and will it work on a PS2?

Have you checked your modchip's settings? Software sets refresh rate for PSX titles, so it's likely your modchip is forcing 50hz.

GSMode selector is for PS2 games only. Yeah I tried all the modchip settings, maybe its a bug with the 02mod but all PS1 games come out as 50hz

it can at least be used to force PAL or NTSC for some PS1 games.

Hi, I realise this topic is a little dated now but did you find out how to do this? And could you direct me to somewhere I could learn more about modding my PS2 and possibly my XBOX?

I have been aware that PAL region games ran at 50hz for a long time but only recently discovered most titles actually ran slower than they should (I previously thought the refresh rate was compensated for somehow). I own a large collection of PS1, PS2 and original XBOX games so am looking to modify my systems to experience these games as they were intended.

Given the amount of time I have spent playing video games I now feel like a large portion of my life has been a lie (I realise that sounds quite dramatic). Non gamers probably wouldn't understand but I am actually quite upset about this.

It depends on the game. There are a few games that are more or less identical, some just make the character or enemies faster while most PAL games are indeed horrible. If you force all PAL games to 60Hz you'll end up with some games that run too fast.

No I never did work it out actually, my PS2 just runs everything PS1 at 50hz, I think its how the modchip has been developed.
