Dodonpachi Bee Storm 4th button?

A friend seems to remember something about the 4th button doing something in Bee Storm, like it would change the laser from what it normally looks like to the smooth laser in Dodonpachi. But nothing happens on my cart. Anybody have some insight onto this? There's really nothing I can find on the internet about it.

I don't remember if it's the fourth button specifically, but one of them does change your shot type, switching it between the three.
