Well, I've been promoting dissenting comments from people who know what they're talking about on that review. Yeah, it's a mainstream blog but it's still an open forum. Oddly enough, I earned that privilege by trying to explain (feebly, I might add) Galuda II's scoring system. There are a few kids over there who know their shit. I use kotaku to create more of them. Hell, I'm glad someone like Ashcraft has a hard on for Cave. If it gets more people playing the games and enjoying them for what they are, I'm all for it. The Galuda II review made me happy, actually. Why? Because it was a positive review by a non-genre enthusiast. It told people what they needed to know: the game is fun. This review fails, hard. I've never played the game, but it seems like a fun score run.

I just got this game and found this little quirk; the Accipiter ship can get to the last form of the last boss just by holding down shot and not moving the whole game. Easy mode is easy. The Bateleur ship is much more fun thankfully.

This thread is resurrected out of the depths of hell, but I just had to say. I bought a 3ds a couple weeks ago and have been, as of lately, blowing my money on dsiWare.

this game is awesome. i just got through my first playthrough, and am way, way impressed. i had to power on my computer, tune into my scrubby internet, and share my feelings.

still getting used to it, and i couldn't get through with the "real" ship. but i plowed through with the cheat one, and had a blast. might have to abandon all those puzzle games i downloaded for awhile. :)

also, a fond hello to any old-guard members who might glance at this. it has been a damn long while. :D
I have no sig whatsoever.

Just got this as a Club Nintendo reward. Apparently, even as a DSi game, you can only redeem the free download code on a 3DS.

Either way, really, really cool.
Only had 10 minutes of play so far, but it's really fun.

EDIT: ignore the Accipiter ship, got to the end with no effort, 91010840 pts. The bomb recharges waaaay too fast, and with autobomb...
Bateleur is more interesting, due to the lack of autobomb.

Also, where the hell is the hitbox? I'm not entirely sure...
It has to be bloody tiny, I'm dodging shit I wouldn't even attempt to go through even in something like noiz2sa, which has both tiny player and bullet hitboxes.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Hey now I always thought bomb style was pretty fun for score attacking.

Is this game finally getting attention around here? Should I start playing it again?

Yeah, Accipiter is the scoring ship, generally. It's not hard to clear, but it sure is damn fun to score with it.

They aren't THAT well received. It depends on the reviewer. If a game isn't loaded chock full of extra modes, some reviewers will be pretty harsh on it (I seem to recall Ign or some such site gave a pretty mediocre review to King of Fighters 13 despite it being great).

Other times, even if a game is really FANTASTIC once you get to know it (*cough* Skullgirls *cough*), reviewers will still be like "eh it's a good game not a lot of extra modes but I guess it's fun to play with friends 7/10".

And lastly you have to remember that a lot of new fighting games are apart of already established franchises with a loyal fanbase who would jump down your throat if you called it shit (Blazblue), or are backed by extremely large companies who spend a lot of money bribingI MEAN PROMOTING their games (Capcom).

This is an argument that comes up all the time in the streaming communities. DJWheat is quite vocal on this and I tend to agree. Street Fighter, as an example - it's an incredibly easy game to watch as a spectator and understand what's going on. Compare that to say "League of Legends" and as a new viewer, you have a hard time understanding what's happening unless you've played a moba before.

Same with shmups vs fighting games. Yes, there's high level techniques in a fighting game -- but one thing is clear. Once guy A smacks guy B's health bar down to zero, guy A wins. The reviewer is a 'new viewer' in this sense. If he or she can mash a few buttons or special moves and get through a few rounds against the AI before it starts to actually counter his play, then he's having fun.

In the old days of Vanilla SF4 - you could mash fierce SRK all day long for the first 5-6 fights and get by. A reviewer might say something like "The AI is pretty well balanced. For the first few fights, it's forgiving and gives you a chance to show off your special moves -- but after 5 or so fights, things really start to get challenging and you have to work for the win"

Compare that to trying to review a shooting game. Let's use Dodonpachi as an example. Straight after I got sucked back in to the shmup scene by the "Hardest Boss Ever" video - I discovered Dodonpachi. (I'd been whoring Tyrian and playing Xenon on an emulator up until that point). As a new player, I did not give one solitary shit about score, chaining or uncovering magical score increasing bumblebees - I just wanted to hold fire, flail like an idiot and blow shit up.

Tell you what though - that massive laser bomb was fun and credit feeding my way to the end of the game was a blast. I remember having a nice feeling of "Oh, this isn't so bad" during stage 1 after reading all the articles about Dodonpachi being ridiculously nuts.

That's pretty much the same boat a reviewer is going to be in. If the game comes at you guns blazing from the start, without any sort of gentle curve then a reviewer is going to be put off and deem it fit only for the hardcore. Similarly, if there's not enough explosions or gunshots going off - the reviewer is going to find it slow and boring. Scoring mechanics generally don't come in to reviews, as for a casual player - sensory overload and having fun are going to be more important.

Sorry, that turned in to a bit of a rant...:0)

I think STGs are just as easy to tell visually what's going on, but they're harder to understand as a player.

Well, maybe not harder to understand in total, but harder to break through to that initial "ah ha!" moment.
