If you want more 2D arcade mech porn, Wolf Fang is the next best accompaniment to Valken IMO (Gunhound notwithstanding, b/c I haven't received it yet.)

Is this for real or is my sarcasm detector broken? Leynos 2 is every bit as awesome as Valken, maybe even more so. And Wolf Fang is better than both.

I'll give Wolf Fang a look. I had played both Cybernator and Gun Hazard before, but couldn't get into them due to the floaty mech controls. However, after playing around with Gunhound, I've gotten used to that. So I'm checking them out again. Gun Hazard...don't know about that one. It has too much RPG elements. I'd rather just run around and shoot things. I'm digging Cybernator(playing the Japanese version with a English patch). I've only played two stages so far though. Seems promising. How many stages does it have?

Gunhound is much more arcade-y than that one. The only thing that bums me out is the fact that it's so short. I was worried about that. The soundtrack is pretty wild though.

If you think Gunhound is too short, Wolf Fang goes waaaaaaaaay in the other direction. A full playthrough takes about an hour. Much too long if you ask me.

Valken (SFC), Gigantic Army (PC) and Ex-Ranza (MD) are among my favourite mecha sidescrollers overall, and all are easy to pick up and play (Ranza's controls seem complex on paper, but they're dead simple to handle). I also love both AS Leynoses and DECO's Wolf Fang, but all are rather hardcore (AS1 has archaic controls and an uneven difficulty curve, AS2 is a quasi-sim affair rather than straight action, and WF quickly gets hard as nails with bosses that'll tear you apart at first). Couldn't get into Gun Hazard, the ARPG grinding put me off.

More arcadey sounds good to me, although Valken is one of the loves of my gaming life. Wolf Fang is long for a bona fide arcade game (slick but v.tough) whereas Valken is just right for console: maybe 1:20 the first time you find your way through it. It's too easy for me now, but should take a few attempts to finish when you're new to it. Enjoy, the English patched JP ver is the best way to play.

I enjoyed it for a while, but it's nowhere near as much of a challenge, is it? I'm pretty sure I blew through the whole thing within a couple of hours of unwrapping it*. Certainly wasn't the case with Valken, which consumed a good wee chunk of my childhood.

*I know this is essentially the same daft complaint people level at shmups, but I was playing it properly! :P

Leynos 2 is just so dull! Bored me to tears. I prefer the simplicity of Leynos 1 by comparison: it's rough around the edges but feels way more straightforward. I won't be buying back L2 ever, tbh, I'm more into the arcade action style of WF and Valken, which is why I'm looking forward to Gunhound so much.

Assault Suits Valken is the best.

Followed by Ex-Ranza (Ranger X), Wolf Fang and Night Slave

You also wanna check out Assault Suits Leynos, Assault Suits Leynos 2, Gun Hazard, Metal Warriors and Gigantic Army

Now I know what the heck was going on with the select button. I thought that was the case, but wasn't sure. Thanks for the write up.

Yeah, I'm really tempted to just sell my copy of Leynos 2 on. I'd much rather just go play Ranger-X.

Mad Stalker played more like The Ninja Warriors Again to me, when I tried out the PS1 version. Sidescrolling brawler with flashy robo-moves. It did seem a helluva lot of fun. Actually imma stick it back on my list.

Yes, press select to blow your armor off before you die. When you do this, your HP will be back to 100%.

Just got this today, and I'm impressed.

I've had the vanilla PC version for awhile, and just got around to applying the official update which turns it into Gunhound EX (I never heard of that PC patch until recently). The PC one has the new Hyakutaro Tsukumo soundtrack, but it does not have the voice acting or simulation mode. Between the two versions, there's a different attack used by the 2nd boss.

I'm not sure how the armor purge is done on the PC version. It's apparently some multi-button command. I've done it by accident a couple times.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

How did you get the PC version?! I can't find any copies of anything.

And speaking of Mad Stalker - I take it the X68000 (original) version is better than the rest (PC-Engine, FM Towns, and the PS1 remake)?

It is, but the difference between the Towns and PCE versions isn't much to write home about. The PCE is a port of the Towns I believe and probably the best option for most people.

The psx version is a horrible abomination and should be avoided at all costs.

I think the X68k has marginally better graphics, probably how Phalanx looks marginally better on x68k than the Snes port. Otherwise it's basically the same afaik. ;)

I had rancor order one for me from amazon.jp, but that was some years ago. And if I recall, the EX patch can only be applied to the original release of the game, not some budget re-release - though that may be me misinterpreting Google Translated info page on the subject.

Why's that? I used to own both PCE and PS, and sold the former because I thought the PS one was way better.

Really? I was the other way around. The PSX ver was so fugly and felt much more cumbersome to play. It also omits the first stage iirc?

Hold on... (goes looking)

This article lays it out for you in full and saves me the effort. PCE/Towns version also has Kaneda's bike apparently! ;)

I've never heard of Mad Stalker before, but it reminds me a lot of Genocide 2 for the Super Famicom.

I applied the patch to the DL Site downloadable version.
