Ghost Stories sounds cool. I do like the idea of team co-op board games, but the only one I own of that kind is the Star Trek 2012 board game, and at best it's just average. I've been tempted by Arkham Horror, but it sounds like an insane undertaking!

My board game obsession has continued and since I last posted here I've really got into:

D-Day Dice - A Kickstarter funded dice rolling resource management WWII beach storming game that works best in solitaire. Sitting down to play on your own with a coffee and a ciggie is a wonderful indulgence, and 30 mins of deep thought in that way feels really good for the old brain. I say 'deep', but D-Day Dice is relatively light compared to many military board games. Co-op with a friend is great too.

Kingdom Builder - From the guy that did Dominion, this settling boardgame with abstract gaming leanings is a touch light compared to really hardcore board games, but really good fun, and a number of random set-up elements mean most games are very different. Nice and chilled this one, and the tiniest whiff of Dominion in the set-up process, but little else connecting the two mechanically.

Race for the Galaxy - A space settlement/sci-fi epic tableau-building card game (tableau-building being the process whereby you build a spread of mechanically interconnected cards in front of you on the table that represents an empire you're building). This game is great, like a more complex Rivals of Catan. It's got an awful manual, and a weird system, so it's really hard to get into (I had it about a year or two before finally starting a game), but once you get into it, it's amazing, and the systems within the cards that support each other, and encourage you to gamble by focusing on different things (military, particular resource farming, trading etc) are superb.

Ascension - a deck building game like Dominion, but a little less intricate and a great deal faster, with less 'dead' cards clogging up your hand, and a strength currency for defeating creatures as well as a standard monetary currency for buying stuff. Lots of fun!

Other than that, I'm back into Memoir 44, Rivals and Dominion like a maniac, and itching to rush out and by Quarriors, Race for the Galaxy expansions, Puerto Rico, Android Netrunner, Wings of Glory, Pandemic, Power Grid and a tonne of others.

Recommend me some!

And what are you playing and loving right now?

Thought to myself a month or so ago maybe it's time I looked at some tabletop/ board games again (I used to play Battletech when I was a teen)

Didn't won't anything with too much complexity or memorization as these days sometimes I forget where I am for a few seconds. Nothing serious, but could interfere with my enjoyment of the game

So I picked up Super Dungeon Explore (16-bit JRPG themed board game) and Dust Tactics. Haven't tried SDE yet as I'm to addicted to DT. Why? the rules are quite simple (complex for a board game, but simple compared to tabletop minature games like Battletech) yet the strategy runs quite deep and I love the casting of the minatures and walkers.
It's one of those alternate WWII scenarios with Axis having access to stuff like genetically modified apes and zombies, and every faction using the aforementioned walking tanks.

Good times, I'm playing Allies to see if I can wipe the evil Axis and those Godless communists from Soviet China off the face of the planet. Wish me luck

If I had more space for board games, ad more cash, and hadn't bought too many already in the past months, I'd love to try Dust Tactics.

Right now me and my wife are obsessed with Through the Ages - it's a little abstract and fiddly feeling at first, but after a couple of games, you realise it has a wonderfully balanced system (you take a civilisation through from ancient times to the present day).

Other than that, I finally got Forbidden Island, which is very simple but fun, and great for when you have freinds over.

And I finally got MX7 round my flat to play some Carcassonne. That was great fun!

I'm now also review tabletop games for a UK national paper, starting with the DC Deck Builder game, which I'm yet to try.

Next up, I'm buying ancient dexterity board game carrom. Think pool meets air hockey.

I'm looking for a deck building game that has a real ending. Not an anti-climactic "some resource runs out, add up points to determine the winner". Something with a cool final confrontation, or a solid goal that determines the winner.

Any suggestions?

I played a lot of this at school during free study periods....

Space Crusade

And when I was younger, this was a solid family favourite. I actually tracked down a sealed one last year and have played it a few times with my girlfriend, it's still fun :) Very rare, finding an unopened one was pretty miraculous - I will admit to forgetting to bid and then sending the seller an offer big enough that they screwed the real buyer.

Awesome. I used to have a friend with that one, we'd play it all the time. Good memories.

Same for me - I used to have a mate down the road with it - awesome memories.

So, system11 - does it have any depth playing as an adult?

Added a pic of Mr Men above.

As for Space Crusade depth, no idea - this was back when I was doing A levels, over 20 years ago. It was Mr Men I picked up again, it's got no depth at all, it's pure dice rolling and luck.
