Voice samples not working in Denin Aleste...HELP!

For some reason, the voice acting samples won't play in Denin Aleste. When I go into the sound edit, I can hear them, but in the game, I cannot hear them at all. For example, in the first level, your character says (in Japanese), "Aleste, show me your power!"

When I had burned the game to be played on my US Sega CD, I figured that it was because the console thought that it was the US version, Robo Aleste. However, I am now playing it on my Japanese Mega CD, and I still can't hear the voices. What's going on? Do I have a hardware capacitor malfunction or something?

Also, why aren't there any continues with this game? Strange...
