VGA to Cat 5 Extender

Post by akumajo »

Hi,

My cabinet is far (30m) from my capturing computer + devices but I would like to capture with them. So I asked google and he told me about a VGA to Cat 5 Extender. The question is, such a thing can works for any signal (240p~480p) ?

Image

sources (15/31khz) > VGA Splitter Output 1 > Cabinet
sources (15/31khz) > VGA Splitter Output 2 > VGA to Cat 5 Transmiter > RJ45 (30m) > VGA to Cat 5 Receiver > Capture devices

On ebay we can find this : http://cgi.ebay.fr/VGA-extender-1x1-UTP ... 19c856ff03

It's cheap and does video and audio.

So what do you think ?

Thanks.

The converters don't analyze your signal, so the video resolution shouldn't matter. The lower the bandwith the better - in terms of quality. Should work fine.

Ok, as I expected. What is confusing is that they are talking about "supported resolutions".

Do you know another method ? There seems to be wifi solutions too, but much expensive (and I hate wifi :p).

No, CAT5/6 is *THE* standard. It's usually used in home theater setups and it's used for house cabling over different floors, even if the wall outlets themselves are HDMI or RGBHV. Don't even think about going wireless.

CAT 5 will carry up to 100Mbps!! That's pretty big when you consider that BluRay is encoded at no where near that.

CAT6 is 1000Mbps.

but those are digital rates. A RGBHV to CAT5 adapter does not encode the analogue signal, it just adapts to the cable - like an unbalanced to balanced audio converter.

I guess that those device should not be connected on switchs ? If yes, I could monitor the bandwith with my Cisco.

Because it's expensive (I will also need a 30m audio cable), + not wife proof ready. RJ45 cables are the only things that I'm allowed  .

again, no digital signal. It's like plugging an analogue mono cable into a digital coax input.
