Excuse my ignorance: What sort of game is this? I've heard of it, but know nothing about it.

Seconded, with Gate of Thunder and Spriggan tied for third.

I'd probably have to go w/ Dracula... Pop 'n' Magic would be 2nd, and probably Star Parodia next.

How is Sylphia?

I only have one PCE-CD game, Gate of Thunder, and it was cheap...

Nexzr: 93' carnival edition and Fray Zak Gaiden are also nice choices.

Although I have burned copies of Drac X and Gradius 2, these would be the first real Duo CD's I'd purchase.

Spriggan is pretty good. Definitely a gem... tied with or maybe a little higher than Sylpha. Better than most 16-bit shooters.

i actually just bought a copy of dracula x last week. it was my birthday, so i thought i'd spoil myself with a game i've allways wanted, but never got around to getting. so far i've only played a few levels, but it rocks! its especially cool if you've allready played SOTN. lots of common themes between the two. i'm playing it on the magic engine demo, and it runs pretty smooth, but i'm not so good using the keyboard to play it.

In my opinion:

- Akumajo Dracula X
- Star Parodier

With Spriggan and Gate of Thunder tied for third.

star parodia is much too easy, i would recommend nexzr or winds of thunder instead.
a more personnal recommendation would be super raiden, the SCD version has a great soundtrack and 2 excellent extra levels (i wonder who the hell did those levels because they're almost better than the arcade). of course it's not as close to the arcade as the PSX port, but in some ways it's better.

Rainbow Islands, unless it's better on Saturn/PSX which I haven't played.

It's got t be Winds of Thunder even before Castlevania, which is definitely the second choice.

Cheers

That's completely true, but really besides the point. For me Star Parodia is an "experience" rather than a regular shmup.

IMO, it's the quintessential PCE game. It's a shmup, it's cute, has great music, japanese humour and it even has a playable PC-Engine character. Every good PCE collection needs to include this game, I think.

I'd go for Sylphia. It's great stuff and has a nice feel to it. I tend to find a lot of older shooters too clunky for me to go back to, but Sylphia stands up rather well.

Gradius II. Not only one of the best games in the series, but it also has an extra level not found in any other version.

I'd go for Rondo of Blood as well. I didn't realize the CV series was so popular here. :D

I still think it's stupidly priced, though, and outclassed in every way by Castlevania IV.

Just two you should consider . . .

Spriggan if you like vertical or Gate of Thunder if horizontal is your thang.

If you can't find either of those then Nexzr is on the subs bench.
Shoot, dodge, collect . . .it's the ONLY way to be !!

Just a note: on the list summer carnival 92 and 93 the games are switched, 92 is Alzadick and 93 is Nexr.

On that note Nexr is really good.
